A Word From Mr. Creeden

The school year is off to an exciting start. Students continue to get oriented to the building and their schedules, teachers and students are having fun getting to know each other, and some students have had opportunities to go outside for class and/or during lunch. Our athletic teams have begun participating in practices and we're looking forward to seeing them represent West in competitions real soon. Please see some pictures below from our first week of school.

September will certainly get busier as the month moves along. At times throughout the next few weeks students will be participating in some diagnostic and benchmark testing in Math and ELA. Also, some upcoming dates to mark on your calendars is our West Meet The Teacher Night on the evening of Thursday September 14th and Picture Day📸 here at Middle School West on Friday September 22nd.

Saving Fred!

Students in Mrs. McGuigan's sixth grade science classes kicked off the school year with the classic Saving Fred STEM activity. This is a cooperative activity that has students work in groups to save a hapless gummy worm named Fred who has managed to capsize his boat and lose his life preserver. Working in small groups, students had to rescue Fred, turn his boat right side up, and put on his life preserver – all without hurting Fred or dropping him into the “lake." In addition, they could not touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands! This activity helps students develop teamwork, problem solving, communication, and fine motor skills.

Field Journal Exploration

Scientists use field journals to record what they find, observe, and collect. They often include sketches, diagrams, observations, and questions. A field journal helps you remember details and identify patterns over time. Students in Ms. Emers' science classes learned about keeping a field journal, then explored our beautiful courtyard and all of its features where they practiced taking accurate and detailed observations in their own field journals.

STEM Challenge Suspension Bridge

Bridges provide crucial access between regions and cities, linking workers to jobs, goods to markets and people to essential services. Students in Mrs. Herzog's eighth grade physical science classes were tasked with building a bridge that would hold at least 50 people (pennies). Working in small groups, the novice engineers designed and constructed a bridge that spanned fourteen inches between two chairs made of only two sheets of paper and tape. The STEM activity was a great way to introduce the students to the wonderful world of physical science.

Upcoming Math & ELA Assessments at West

To better learn about our student's level of understanding in Math and ELA, they will be participating in some upcoming assessments. Some assessments will be given in class while others may be scheduled outside of their class time. The data received from these assessments will provide teachers with information to better inform their planning and instruction. The data will also allow students to know what areas in Math and ELA are strengths and areas that can be improved. Maximizing instructional time for our students is paramount and performance data supports our teaching staff in designing more purposeful and targeted instruction. Our goal is to make sure that every child is on target for success, and we thank you for your continued efforts at home. Please see below for more information about each assessment. If you have any questions please reach out to Jen Moylan, our West MTSS Facilitator, at jmoylan@pvsd.org.

i-Ready Diagnostic

i-Ready Diagnostic is the heart of the i-Ready Assessment suite. The diagnostic evaluation prepares and equips teachers by delivering actionable data that addresses the first part of the learning process—knowing exactly where each student is. The testing assessments manifests the core belief that all students can grow and achieve grade-level expectations. These diagnostic assessment tools help educators see where students are, set high—but achievable—expectations for growth, and connect the right instructional tools to help them get there. The i-Ready Diagnostic will be given in math classes during the week of September 5th.

Star Assessments

The STAR Assessments by Renaissance, STAR Reading and STAR Math, are comprehensive literacy and math universal screeners that are computer adaptive. These assessments will provide teachers with current, reliable and valid data quickly so they can target instruction, monitor progress, provide students with instructional materials, and intervene and enrich where needed. Student reports will be provided to families after each assessment. The STAR Assessments will be given in ELA and math classes during week of September 11th. For more information about the STAR Assessments please go to Parents Guide to STAR Assessments.

LinkIt! Benchmark Testing

The LinkIt! Benchmark assessments help teachers determine student progress on specific topics in Language Arts and Math that are expected learning in a particular grade level/course. The LinkIt! assessments indicate progress on state standards, assisting teachers to target areas of instruction. LinkIt! Benchmarks will occur a minimum of two times during the school year. The LinkIt Benchmark ELA and math assessments will be given to select students during the week of September 18th. LinkIt! Benchmark Information

Therapy Dogs @ West Permission

Perkiomen Valley Middle School West will be participating in a Therapy Dog Program, throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Handlers and their dogs will meet with the students whose parent/legal guardians have given their written authorization for their participation in the Therapy Dog Program during school hours. The Therapy Dog and Their Handlers are fully insured and have undergone extensive training.

Counselor's Corner

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month —a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.

For more information about Suicide Prevention Awareness Month as well as additional resources please visit https://www.nami.org/Get-Involved/Awareness-Events/Suicide-Prevention-Awareness-Month

Nurse Notes

Physical & Dental Exams

Sixth grade students require a physical examination and seventh grade students require a dental examination. Exams from July 1, 2022 to the present are acceptable. If your child has had these examinations, please be sure to send a copy to the Nurse's office. Forms are available on the PV website. Your cooperation with this is most appreciated!

Medication

If your child requires medication during the school day, parents must bring the medication to school with the appropriate forms completed by the physician. The forms can be found on the PV website. No medication should be in the student’s possession (pockets, lunch, purse/handbag, or backpack) unless designated by the nurse per state laws.

It is especially important if your child has been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy, seizures or asthma AND requires emergency medication that you supply the nurse with the required medication.

All medications are to be delivered directly to the nurse’s office and kept in the health room unless otherwise designated by the school nurse. Medication may be delivered at the start of the school year.

Tween Talk Group

Tweens, ages 11 to 13, are invited to chat in a fun, informal atmosphere with Erin McMonagle, a guidance counselor at Perkiomen Valley East Middle School - as part of our Julia’s Joy Youth Empowerment Program. We have created a safe group, where they can come relax, unload and learn they are not alone all while meeting new friends. We believe learning Stress Management tips will help youth deal with the pressures they are feeling at this age and into the future!

This group is free thanks to donations, if you would like to make a donation, it is always appreciated, but not necessary!

Safe2Say

Our students can submit an anonymous tip through the Safe2Say Program. Tips are typically related to a variety of challenges our students experience or witness, such as bullying, harassment, disrespectful language, safety concerns, etc. When a tip is received, the State (who runs Safe2Say) immediately follows up with building administrators.
