CVU Celebrations
October 9, 2026
Dear Community,
I was on a call this morning when one of our district principals shared that he had asked his staff two questions, one of which has stayed with me all day:
What is something you’re proud of?
What is something you’re excited about?
As I was considering how I would answer those questions, I received two emails and a visit that all spoke to the first.
Email #1 was from a CVU graduate from the Class of 2003, who simply wanted to reach out and share his appreciation:
Dear Principal Riley,
I wanted to send a brief note of appreciation to you and two of your students. I recently read about Olivia and Yvonne's work with the Farm to School Club in a Shelburne Farms newsletter, and as a CVU alumnus, I was both deeply impressed and proud. Their initiative is a wonderful example of leadership, ambition, citizenship, and stewardship—qualities every student should strive to embody.
Seeing the active role these young women are taking in your community speaks volumes about the supportive culture you have fostered at CVU. Thank you for your continued leadership, and congratulations to Olivia and Yvonne on their inspiring work.
Best regards,
Email #2 was from another CVU graduate from the Class of 2003, who is married to one of my former advisees from the same class. Their son is now a CVU student in the Class of 2029. The email included a photo of me with one of my former students from the Class of 2000, who is now a colleague of mine and the parent of an Essex Hornet soccer player.
He and his mom, a member of the CVU Class of 1972, were cheering on the Hornets at Wednesday’s game, though we all know their hearts are still with the ’Hawks!
The visit was from one of my former advisees from the Class of 2020, who is currently substituting at CVU as she prepares to transition into her first teaching job next month.
Three seemingly small moments, each a reminder of the many ways our lives and paths continue to intersect long after graduation.
So, what am I proud of?
Perhaps a better way to say it is that I’m proud to be part of a school community where the connections we make are lasting and meaningful. A community where students become graduates, graduates become colleagues, and former advisees return as educators. Where families span generations, our paths cross in unexpected ways, and the relationships built here continue to grow well beyond the walls of the school.
One of the parts of this job I love most is finding out where our graduates land, what paths they take, and the lives they build along the way. I love seeing the many ways their experiences at CVU become part of their stories, and how they, in turn, become part of the stories of others. Sometimes, we get a glimpse of that impact through a note of appreciation, a photograph from a soccer game, or a familiar face stopping by to share what comes next.
These moments remind me that the work we do in schools is about so much more than what happens in a classroom or during the school day. It’s about the relationships we build, the opportunities we create, the values we nurture, and the sense of belonging that can endure for years—even generations.
We don’t always get to see where the seeds we plant will take root, or how far their impact will reach. But every now and then, we’re given a glimpse, and we’re reminded that the connections we make matter. That’s something I’m proud to be a part of.

student celebrations
Botany field trip
Botany students explored the UVM Greenhouse and Pringle Herbarium on a field trip. Some favorite plants in the greenhouse were the coffee tree, the pitcher plant, and lots of neat cactuses!
Bow and Arrow Ballistics Lab!
Physics students completed their ballistic launch labs on Monday and Tuesday. They got to have a ton of fun shooting bow and arrows AND learning the physics behind them. They even used the new Ipads with higher definition video analysis to check their presumed launch velocity against the computer calculations. Thanks to Dave, Laurel, and Joey for making this lab so awesome!
STATE CHAMPS AGAIN! 🏆⛳️
The CVU Girls Golf team won their 4th State Championship in a Row on Tuesday! Riley Makay and Kaiya Galipeau finished 2nd and 3rd overall respectively to secure the win. Riley Dunn added a strong performance to round out the successful day at Neshobe Golf Club. Huge congratulations to the entire team for another successful season!
Woods & Water
Woods & Water students recently had the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world forestry. Special thanks to Pete Gardner at Clifford Lumber, who introduced students to the many ways lumber is processed and used within our local economy. Before visiting the mill, students spent time at UVM’s Jericho Research Forest practicing with forestry tools such as Biltmore sticks, 10-factor prisms, and stocking guides. We also appreciate Dr. Jess Wikle at UVM for sharing longitudinal forest data that allowed students to apply their field measurements and think about forest stocking and management.
Project Academy
Students in Project Academy building their full-size trebuchets and doing amazing work!
Practical Writing Mount Philo Field Trip 10/8/26
Practical Writing students hiked Mt. Philo as part of their descriptive nature writing unit. At the top we enjoyed great views along with apples and cider donuts for all, kindly donated by the Yate's Family Orchard.

Design and Engineering Technology Shop
In Jewelry class this week, students brainstormed and sketched copper wire ring ideas which they then explained to a partner in class. Through discussion and feedback, each student then settled on a design to move into the prototype phase and started capturing what their fabrication process will look like for making their final ring.
In Woods class this week, students are tackling various projects, both personal and community service based. Part of that work involves squaring up lumber for use. Additionally, Eddie Krasnow joined us to work with students on bowl turning. Thank you, Eddie, for sharing your passion and being a part of our community!
Redhawks Radio!
Members of the Redhawks Radio team took over the airwaves during Friday’s C3 block for a special live broadcast! Student DJs brought the station to life with music, live commentary, and the latest campus updates.
If you missed the live show—or just want to keep the music going—you can stream CVU's Redhawk Radio station anytime, anywhere. Catch up on student broadcasts and listen live on the CVU Redhawk Radio Website.
Nichols Core
Students in Nichols Core have been crushing their independent reading books! Some books are so good that multiple students have selected the same books. Zach and Felix are loving Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman!
Design Tech
Compass Students Have a Picnic…
Students from the Compass Program worked with teacher Olaf Verdonk to design and build a picnic table for all the kids in their program to enjoy using outside their classroom space!
Jace P. and Gavin L. using the drills to great effect!

Eye Screening
We are fortunate to have the Lions Club come to CVU to offer eye screenings for 9th grade students on October 5th and 7th. They will be returning on October 13th to screen 12th grade students in the school library.
The screening provides free, community-based vision checks to detect early signs of vision loss and eye conditions in children. The students simply look at the red light refractory camera and it takes a picture to examine the health and responsiveness of the eye.
Our focus is to screen 9th and 12th graders. However, if you have concerns about your student’s vision, or they missed the prior screening, they can stop by and get their eyes checked with seniors on the 13th.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the CVU health office, 802-482-7185.
