Bryn Mawr Bulletin- October 2025
Note from Mrs. Beverly
Dear Bryn Mawr Families,
Wow! We are a month into school, and things are going well here at Bryn Mawr! We have so many amazing students that are eager to learn and try their best. They are making us proud of them every day.
At Bryn Mawr, our K–2 students use iReady Math—an interactive program that builds strong number sense, problem-solving skills, and confidence in math. The program adapts to each child’s needs, offering engaging lessons, practice, and games that help students grow. iReady asks students to think, try and discuss their mathematical thinking. Each student has a personalized learning path through the iReady platform as well. Please see the picture below of the skills your students will be working on at each grade level.
Beginning of the year data will be sent home to families next week. This will include DIBELs (Diagnostic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy) and iReady Math and ELA reports. Teachers will utilize this data, plus classroom observations and assessments to help create WIND groups. WIND groups stand for What I Need Differentiated. Each grade level has a WIND block built into their daily schedules. Students receive targeted instruction in an area to help support them in an area they may need intervention or enrichment in with other grade level peers.
Being a K-2 principal is one of the best jobs in the world. I get to witness firsthand how much your children grow academically and socially each day, month, year, and the course of their schooling at Bryn Mawr. Bryn Mawr School is an amazing place to learn thanks to our hard-working teachers and dedicated staff. We thank our families for being partners in education with us.
Smile,
Brooke Beverly
Bryn Mawr Principal

Kindergarten News
The kindergarten children have settled into the school routine and have become a part of the Bryn Mawr School learning community. The school rules and routines have been reviewed daily. Students are practicing self-help skills such as opening snacks and putting on coats and sweatshirts independently. We continue to reinforce the importance of making good choices and listening to adult directions.
In reading we have begun our first unit “Take a New Step” and will continue to unit two “Let’s Explore!” We are learning the letters and sounds of Mm, Aa, Ss, Rr and students are very excited to be reading our first high frequency words, I, can, a, the, and see. The children are learning to always start at the top when forming letters and numbers. Our students have also started to categorize books as “narrative” and “informational” as well as retell the beginning, middle, and end. These are beginning writing skills that will start to shape our little authors!
In math we have dove into our new iReady curriculum. We are practicing, sorting, naming attributes and using position words. Students have enjoyed using manipulatives and have been doing a lot of “turn and talk” to explain their thinking and ideas with partners.
We are beginning to work on our autumn unit. In this unit the children will become more aware of the changes in their environment. We will talk about the weather and discuss the life cycles of apples and pumpkins. We will begin talking about how we use our five senses to explore the new season. We hope to be outside whenever weather allows so please continue to send jackets and sneakers as needed.
Remember to help your child practice their first and last name as often as possible. It is often hard for students to break the habits of name writing with all uppercase letters. Please continue to review and celebrate all the great work they are bringing home!
First Grade Feature
First grade is off to a great start. We have begun our first-grade curriculum. We are diving into our new math program iReady. In Empowering Writers, we have started the sentence of the day. We are also learning about different kinds of genres and what the author’s purpose is when writing these texts. We have started guided reading, and our Wonders reading program. We are learning our school rules and routines. These help us create a safe and happy environment where everyone can learn and have fun.
In first grade, we are teaching students to become more independent. We are encouraging students to take responsibility for their own belongings, complete tasks on their own and make choices about their learning activities.
Every day is a new adventure in grade one, we love seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they discover new things.
Thank you for your support and involvement in your child’s education. We are looking forward to a fantastic school year together!
Second Grade Section
The second-grade students have been busy learning routines, rules, and developing a positive learning environment in class. We begin each day with restorative circles/morning meetings. This allows all children the opportunity to settle in and be prepared for the day ahead.
ELA:
In reading, we have focused on identifying characters, plot, and setting, as well as visualizing text. Be sure to continue to encourage the love for reading at home. We are also diving into our new writing program, Empowering Writers. The literacy launch is teaching students the difference between narrative, informational, and opinion texts.
Math:
Students have been introduced to our new iReady Math Program and are working on basic addition and subtraction. Becoming proficient with addition and subtraction facts through at-home practice will ensure greater ease and understanding with the new math concepts to come.
Social Studies/Science:
The children are currently working on map skills, which will allow them to create their own maps.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us.

Tech Time with Mrs. LeBreton
Greetings Parents and Welcome Back to School!
My name is Kerry LeBreton and I am the Technology Teacher at both Pakachoag and Bryn Mawr Schools.
We are fortunate to have iPads available daily for your children’s use. During September and October, we will focus on teaching proper iPad and computer usage, along with Digital Citizenship—ensuring that technology is used safely and enjoyably both at school and at home. Please encourage your child to share what they’re learning in Technology Class each week!
Here is a wonderful site for kids that sends you on a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo (https://sdzwildlifeexplorers.org/). This site allows kids to explore the zoo and see the animals in real time. You can click on the link and be transported right to the zoo! The students will love learning all about the animals and seeing them live as well.
Another excellent resource for parents is called Common Sense Media (commonsensemedia.org). This website provides insights into what your children are viewing, playing, and engaging with online, enabling you to assist them when they may need help. If you're concerned about too much screen time or what content is appropriate for your children to watch on TV, this resource is very helpful.
I’m excited for a fantastic school year ahead!
Musical Message from Mrs. Garrow
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
Hello to everyone and welcome back to our returning Bryn Mawr students! If we haven’t met yet, I am Ms. Garrow, the Music Teacher at Bryn Mawr. I am looking forward to getting to know all of our new Kindergarteners and our new Grade 1 and 2 students!
This year in Music, we have some wonderful musical journeys to take! Playing instruments, singing, dancing, playing musical games, and learning songs from around the world are just some of the things on our agenda.
Our Winter Concerts are something students work hard on and look forward to every year and they will be on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Please stay tuned for more information in the future!
To begin our year, students have played partner song-games, sang as a group, played instruments, and learned some valuable basic musical skills. Our Grade 2 students have begun their journey around the world to 6 of the 7 continents, and have been to many countries on the continent of Africa, learning traditional songs, dances, and games. Kindergarten has been adjusting to life as “musical big kids”, getting to know each other and the routine of Bryn Mawr Music. Grade 1 has been enjoying songs and games of cooperation, learning how to make music in pairs and small groups.
It has been an amazing start to what promises to be an amazing year!
Art Extravaganza with Ms. Bush
Happy Fall!
It has been a joy to welcome my new kindergarten students and return to creating with my 1st and 2nd graders. Their creativity shines, and I look forward to sharing their wonderful artwork with you throughout the year.
So far, we’ve been diving into the elements of art, starting with the element of line.
Kindergartners have been practicing their fine motor skills with lots of cutting, gluing, and tracing. To kick off our study of line, we made element of line crowns—each one decorated with different kinds of lines. We also created some amazing line lions to show off our learning!
First graders explored the element of line through exciting projects like line rockets, which they are very proud of, and line-pattern spiders that came out wonderfully detailed and unique.
Second graders took on a challenge by creating their own line landscapes, choosing any setting they liked and showing the foreground, middle ground, and background. They also learned how to draw spider webs using white oil pastel over pencil lines. We painted over them with watercolor to see how oil and water don’t mix—the results were fantastic! I’m so impressed with their skills and creativity.
What’s Next?
Next, we’ll be exploring the element of shape through many new and exciting projects.
Mindfulness Mondays
We’ve also started up Mindfulness Mondays in the art room again. To begin, we learned about having a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. Students decorated two sides of a brain—one for fixed mindset, one for growth mindset. They filled them with symbols and words to show how we can shift our thinking and stay positive, especially when something feels challenging.
International Dot Day
On September 15th, we celebrated International Dot Day by reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Every student created their own unique dot, using three assigned colors for each grade level. These dots will soon be combined into a beautiful whole-school masterpiece, celebrating the idea that we are all artists!
Press Release from Miss D
Hi Parents/Guardians,
It has been such a wonderful start to the school year! We have been learning and reviewing the rules and expectations of PE class while following the school values of being safe, respectful, responsible and kind. To start off the school year, we have been working on the manipulative skill of throwing and catching through stations and whole group games as well as cooperative activities. For the remainder of trimester one, our units will consist of lacrosse, fitness and basketball.
This year in first and second grade, we will be participating in “Marathon Mondays" in partnership with Marathon Kids which is a nationwide nonprofit to promote kids to get moving. Each student will be getting a QR code that is unique to them where they will scan to keep track of their mileage. As a school, we are hoping to reach 1,000 miles by the end of the school year! As this is a pilot, I am starting with first and second, and hoping to add kindergarten throughout the year or next year.
As always, please remember to send your child to school in sneakers on PE day for their safety. I am also looking for donations of paper towels to help clean up the occasional water spill that happens. Thank you for your continued support!
In good health,
Miss. D
