Dear Hardy Families,
Thank you for an incredible first week of school! I am thrilled to have all of our Owls back on campus once again. Students took tours of the campus to familiarize themselves with where everything is, learned how to play safely on our new playgrounds, co-created their classroom vision for learning along with norms and agreements, watched the first SOAR TV of the year, our TK/Kinders landed with their captains (teachers) after a week of flight school, and we all experienced our first Friday courtyard assembly. Amazing!
Our students are eager to get into leadership roles; many have already asked when they can apply. We'll roll out student leadership roles on Wednesday, August 26 during our Leader in Me kick-off assemblies. We encourage EVERY Owl to be part of a leadership team of some kind, even TK!
The first few Hardy Happenings tend to run a bit longer; there's a lot of information to cover as we launch a successful school year. Thank you in advance for reading it through.
I'm looking forward to welcoming you all to Back to School Night tomorrow evening. This is an adult-only event. We've secured SDSU parking from 5:00-7:15; please register immediately using this link:

See you tomorrow evening, and here's to a wonderful second week!
With Gratitude,
Principal Aragon
HARDY SCHOOL INFORMATION
PARKING & PRIMETIME REMINDERS
Under no circumstance may you park in the south lot, by the construction fence before, during, or after school, including during PrimeTime pickup. Our General Contractor needs that gate accessible at all times, and parking there blocks staff from moving their own vehicles. You will be ticketed or towed.
Please do not line up in the car line before 1:50 pm unless you are a TK or Kindergarten family. TK and Kindergarten families have priority pick up during this time. If you arrive early and are not TK or Kindergarten, you will be asked to loop around the block and return after 1:50. TK/K families with older siblings should come at the 2:10 dismissal time.
For PrimeTime drop-off (before 7:00 a.m.) or pick-up (after 2:45 p.m.), please park in the loading zone. PrimeTime pick-up cannot happen within 30 minutes of school dismissal; please wait until 2:45. Picking up at the same time as regular dismissal puts too much strain on our limited parking.
If your student is not attending PrimeTime on a given day, you must do both of the following:
- Call the Hardy front office by 11:00 a.m. to let us know
- Call PrimeTime directly to let them know
Hardy and PrimeTime are separate organizations. We do not communicate your child's absence to PrimeTime on your behalf. Please do not rely on informing your child's teacher of an absence (unless it's to request makeup work) as a way to excuse the absence or notify PrimeTime; teachers are teaching and cannot reliably pass along that information.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - Tuesday, August 18 5:30 Adult Only
Please join us next Tuesday, August 18th for Back to School Night, beginning at 5:30 in the auditorium. We're expecting a large number of families, so we'll offer two identical Principal Orientation sessions in the auditorium: 5:30-6:00 and 6:00-6:30. We'll also have two identical in-person classroom sessions to choose from: 6:00-6:30 and 6:30-7:00. Please choose which Principal Orientation session and which classroom session(s) work best for your family.
Weekly Attendance Snapshot
% Present Year to Date: 98% (Goal: 96.5%)
Chronic or Severe (2 Absences a Month): 7.5% (Goal: 8%)
If your student is homesick, please notify the front office by phone or by completing the REPORT AN ABSENCE form.
WEEK ONE ATTENDANCE: AMAZING JOB OWLS! 98% 🎯📚⭐
Great attendance is one of the biggest predictors of student success. It might not seem like much, but missing just two days a month adds up to being chronically absent, and that pattern over a full school year means your child misses nearly a month of instruction. Attendance and being on time are directly tied to student achievement, so every day truly counts.
A NOTE ON TARDIES
We know traffic backs up as it gets closer to 7:40, and sometimes that light just won't change! Please plan ahead for it. All students head to class at 7:40 and are marked tardy at 7:45. Back up your alarms, build in a little extra time, and help your student start their day on time and set up for success.
ACTION NEEDED: Forms in Parent Portal
FORMS & LCFF DATA
Health Information Exchange Form
SDUSD has gone digital. All those back-to-school forms that used to get sent home in a paper packet are now online in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. We ask that you complete the form by Friday, August 14.
To help families complete the form we have created a helpful job aid. CLICK HERE for a step by step guide on how to access and complete the form in PowerSchool Parent Portal.
After-School Programs & Enrichment
After School Enrichment Begins Soon!
We are welcoming several beloved providers back for after-school enrichment programs starting as soon as this week. As we finalize the full roster of opportunities, feel free to begin registering now. Keep an eye out for additional registration links opening soon.
PTA & Dad's Club
🦉 Join the PTA + Get Involved!
Now that the first week of school is behind us, here are four easy ways to get involved at Hardy.
PTA helps fund programs, classroom needs, and other resources that district funding doesn’t always cover. It’s also one of the ways families can help shape how we support Hardy students and staff throughout the year.
1. Join Hardy PTA
Membership is $15 for the school year and gives you a voice in PTA decisions. Joining does not require volunteering.
https://jointotem.com/ca/san-diego/hardy-elementary-pta
2. Come to our first PTA meeting
Friday, September 4 at 8am | Hardy Auditorium
Meet the PTA board, share your ideas, ask questions, and, most importantly, help approve this year’s budget.
3. Tell us how you’d like to help
Complete our Volunteer Interest Form to let us know what kinds of opportunities interest you. Checking a box does not commit you to anything– we’ll simply keep you in the loop when something is a good fit.
Make a difference in a child's life. Become an "Everyone A Reader" volunteer!
Students who receive one-on-one reading support build confidence, strengthen their literacy skills, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Just one hour a week can have a lasting impact.
How It Works
Attend a free 1.5-hour volunteer orientation at Hardy.
Be paired with 3 students identified by their teacher for one-on-one reading support.
Volunteer just one hour each week during the school year.
Parents, grandparents, SDSU students, and community members are all welcome!
First Volunteer Training: Mon, Aug 31, 8:15am (after drop-off) in the Library.
