JMS Parents and Families,

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Read-A-Thon and Family Fun Night over the last month! It was truly a pleasure to see so much positivity come from our students and families during that time. March is a short month due to spring break, but there is a lot happening in the next several weeks, so please see the important information below.

READ-A-THON and FAMILY FUN NIGHT RECAP READ-A-THON and FAMILY FUN NIGHT RECAP

Thank you to the JMS PTO for making the first-ever JMS Read-A-Thon and Family Fun Night possible. During the past month, participating JMS students read over 45,000 pages!!!

Additionally, our first ever Family Fun Night seemed to be a big success as well! The Family Fun Night was well attended and was not only a capstone event of the Read-A-Thon, but also featured involvement from many of the clubs at JMS, and included other fun family-themed activities as well.

Thank you to everyone who made those events possible, as well as students who participated in the Read-A-Thon and families who attended the Family Fun Night!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL... FROM THE PRINCIPAL...

JMS Parents and Families,

I want to take a moment and ask for your help. Unfortunately, we have been hearing about and working to address situations in which some JMS students have been making hurtful and inappropriate comments to other students at school. Concerns that I have heard most recently tend to have to do with some students making ignorant or harassing comments to others about race. This has included repeating untrue stereotypes and/or using racist terms or phrases. These situations have not been only limited to race, but that has been a common theme.

I have been encouraged by some recent conversations that I have had with parents and students, and from that wanted to enlist the help of all of our parents and families to work to put an end to these concerns. Please take some time to talk with your student(s) about the importance of showing respect to everyone, regardless of individual differences. Every student has the right to feel safe and welcome at Jefferson Middle School, and I am confident that if we work together, we can make that a reality for every student.

I also want students and parents to know what can be done to report concerns of this nature. Students and/or parents can always reach out to myself and Mr. Erickson, members of our pupil services team (Mrs. Battist, Mrs. Riedl, and Mrs. Thoel), the student's advisor, or any other trusted adult at JMS. Additionally, people are always welcome to use Speak Up, Speak Out (SUSO) to report concerns anonymously. SUSO can be accessed here-https://speakup.widoj.gov/, as well as on the SDOJ and JMS homepages. Students also have access to SUSO through their school Chromebooks.

As always, thank you for your support!

Mike Matteson

Our PTO has been working hard brainstorming new events and activities for our middle school. We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the first JMS Read-a-Thon! It was so neat to see the reading pages increase each week. The Family Fun Night on 2/28 was a big success and such a fun time. Thank you to our Read-a-Thon committee for all their hard work and dedication. Thank you volunteers and JMS staff for your continued support during this school year. These events cannot happen without each one of you. Congratulations to ALL student readers!
