Quarantine: Activities and Helpful Tips

by Cooper Arbisi and Eliza Levitt

We are sure all of us have been bored out of our minds before, and especially now that's the case. It seems like there’s never anything to do! It’s even harder to come up with ideas and activities without involving other people. Although the internet may seem like the only way to pass time, there are plenty of options to keep you entertained! Here are a few ideas that can help you pass time during quarantine. We hope you are all staying safe and healthy!

School Work

Although we are out of school and are unable to physically be learning in a classroom, we have been doing online learning for the past 2 months. This may be confusing and stressful to some, but here’s how we like to schedule and organize our school work. Try your best to get at least 8 hours of sleep everyday. Sleep schedules are very important because it can determine how your day will be, and it’s also important to wake up at a reasonable time. It’s best to get your schoolwork done earlier rather than doing it very late and getting stressed. It’s also important that you find a workspace to do your schoolwork on, which should be quiet and relaxing. Lastly, make sure that you check each and every one of your classes and grades every day to make sure that you are up to date with all your assignments.

Games/Video Games

There are plenty of games to play, even if you can’t play with other people. As many of you already know, video games are a great way to pass time. There are all different types of video games you can play, and usually you can play on different devices. Xbox, iPhone, iPad, iPod, PS4, and computers are all devices you can find games to play on. Some games even allow you to play with other people, even if you aren’t with them. Some video games we know are enjoyable are Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Just Dance. Also, you can play board games with some of the people in your house. This is not the best idea to do with other people besides family because of quarantine, but you can always play with your siblings. Some of our favorite board games are Life, Monopoly, Sorry, Apples to Apples, Headbands, Heads Up, Connect 4, Uno, and Pictionary.

Spending Time with Family and Friends

Because we are in a time where we aren’t allowed to be around many people due to safety reasons, it’s important to reach out to family and friends at least once every day to be able to communicate with others. Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime are great ways to achieve this. It’s a great way to catch up with everyone you know and love, and it’s important to stay close with those you love during this hard time. Although we can’t physically be with our friends and family, it’s a great way to communicate and stay in touch with them.

Movies and TV Shows

Movies and TV shows are a great way to stay entertained during this time. There are many ways you can watch what you would like even if you don’t own the movie or show. Some websites we like to use are Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Youtube, On Demand (Fios), Amazon Fire Stick, and Fox. Using these websites can bring you on an adventure to a whole new place. We enjoy watching and have heard good things about, Glee, Friends, All American, Tiger King, Locke & Key, High School Musical the Musical the Series, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, Avengers Endgame, Onward, Frozen 2, The Simpsons, Stranger Things, Shrek, It-Chapter 2, Knives Out, Star Wars and many more.

Crafts

There are many types of crafts to do, no matter what you feel like doing! Even if you don’t have craft kits, there are many ways to make something from supplies you have at home. Amazon, Michaels, Target, and many other stores offer crafts you can order online, and will get to you in a couple days. If you don’t want to get a craft kit, or don’t already own one, you can watch videos online on how to make crafts with supplies that you have at home. We both have made a lot of crafts in our free time including water marbling, paintings, oobleck, gumball machines, cards, and chalk art.

Instruments/Music

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play an instrument of yours or learn new pieces of music but never had the time to do it? Now that we are in quarantine, learning how to play an instrument and learning new pieces of music can be a great way to spend your time! It’s a great skill to have in life, and there are also many videos that can help you on apps such as YouTube! For example, during this time, we have been learning how to play the guitar, piano, ukulele, and flute. In addition, we also enjoy listening to music because it calms us down and helps us get through this hard time in our lives.

Baking/Cooking

We know that cooking and baking are very entertaining ways to pass time. We both have always enjoyed cooking and baking, especially sweet treats our families can enjoy. If you aren’t very good at baking or cooking, it’s ok! I am sure one of your family members would offer to help you, or maybe even a friend over Facetime! There are also plenty of recipes online and in books that you can pick and choose what to make based on your abilities. Some of our favorite things to make are chocolate chip cookies, baked potatoes, brownies, mac and cheese, pancakes, and waffles.

Painting or Coloring

When we have some downtime and are not doing anything else, we both like to paint. From paper to canvas, there are unlimited options for what you are able to paint, what brushes you use, etc. Painting is a great way to relieve stress and accomplish something great! It does not matter how much skill you have, what matters is that you are relaxed and content. It’s a great way to spend time and show off to friends and family, and it’s a great way to cure your boredom during this time!

Online Shopping

Although many stores are closed, we can still shop online to get new items such as clothing, sneakers, room decor, or anything else you may want! Because of this situation, many stores are having big sales where you can get many items for not that much money! This is the perfect time to go shopping now that new spring clothing and other items are coming out. Although the shipping on items may be delayed, you will still get what you ordered, and will have a bunch of new things to show off when everyone gets out of quarantine!

Cleaning/ Restyling

Although some of us may not want to, you are probably going to have to clean up your houses or rooms during this quarantine. Many of us think this is a bad thing, but there are different ways to turn cleaning into a fun activity. While you are cleaning your room or house, you can clean out some things that you don’t use anymore. Seeing all of these items usually makes you remember fun times with it, and it is nice to remember these stories. Also, while cleaning, you can start to restyle your room by changing the theme, the order of things in your room, or what goes in that room. We both have been working on restyling and cleaning our rooms, and it is a fun way to spend our time!

We hope that all of these ideas will help you during quarantine!

Ways To Stay Fit at Home

by Elizabeth Hickey

Since we are all stuck at home, there is really no way to get access to some places to exercise. But, there are some ways to do just that without any equipment. If you have equipment at your house, great! You could use those equipment, if you want. But, a lot of people probably don’t. So, some ways to get cardio fitness are running around the block, or walking would be good for you, too. And, you can ride your bike. You can burn 400 calories an hour, and it strengthens your lower body. Also, you can listen to music while doing those exercises. Science has shown that it can even help you improve your exercise performance. Next fitness you can focus on is your strength. Like I said, if you have dumbbells or anything to help you with your strength, you could use those. But for an exercise, you could do squats, lunges, planks, push-ups, and balancing poses. The last fitness you could focus on is flexibility. One of the stretches is a quad stretch. In that, you need to stand upright and bend one leg back, grabbing the top of that foot. Another stretch is called the Hamstring stretch. And in that one, you need to stand upright, bending one knee, and the other right out in front of you. And that’s how to stay fit at home!

Early Morning Risers

by Teresa Greene and Sam Offitto

Did you have to give up chorus when you got into middle school because you wanted to play an instrument? Or do you just want to sing more? Well there is a way you can continue chorus! Early morning risers is run by Ms. Tauches, the 7th grade chorus teacher, and it is open to students in band and orchestra. However, anyone in any music class can join. Also, you do not need to try out for this club, Early morning risers is for anyone and everyone. It is at 7:15 am on Thursdays before school.

Early Morning Risers is super fun! We get to sing fun songs like “Coco Medley,” “Run Run Rudolph,“ and much more. We get to go to Jones Beach sometimes for the Winter light show and perform afterwards. In the spring we sing at one of the school’s spring concerts. We get to do all of this, and still continue to play our instruments.

There are no lessons for Early Morning Risers since it isn’t an actual class, it is just like any other club just not after school. The fun thing about Early Morning Risers is that everyone who is in it loves to sing and everyone gets to school early just so they can continue singing. It is a really fun club and we definitely recommend it!

Fall Musical vs. Spring Revue: Survey

by Lily O’ Daly

The fall musical and the spring revue are similar but at the same time very different. The fall musical sticks with one show and follows the storyline. There are more lines in this show. The spring revue is a mix of a bunch of songs from different musicals. I gave 2 surveys to 14 students to determine which one they like better. The first survey is to determine which show people like to watch more and the second survey is to find out which show is more fun for cast members. Here are the results:

Survey for Viewers:

Survey for Cast Members

In the end, 100% of viewers like watching the fall musical more, and 80% of cast members like doing the fall musical more. 20% of cast members like the spring musical more.

Would You Rather?

1. Would you rather own your dream car or go on your dream vacation?

2. Would you rather be the richest person on Earth or be the most popular person on Earth?

3. Would you rather live on the moon or live on Mars?

4. Would you rather know every language or communicate with animals?

5. Would you rather have Thanksgiving leftovers or Christmas/Christmas Eve/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa leftovers?

6. Would you rather be the most popular kid in school or be the most athletic kid at school?

That's it! How many did you answer? Were these questions hard to answer? Be sure to tell your friends how you did!

All About Gravity

by Ava Chaikin

You may be thinking, “Gravity, I know what that is!” or “Why would gravity matter to me?”

Well, gravity is complex, and it would be awesome to teach you more about it! So, if this interests you, stick around and maybe learn something new!

What is Gravity?

Gravity is very important, it is the force that keeps us grounded (literally)! It is the force that pulls two bodies together. Imagine the apple orchard. Think of how many apples you see on the ground, ants all around them, bees swarming them, some even rotting. How do they get to the ground? Besides the person who dropped them or the wind that blew them, Gravity! If this wonderful force was not here you would drop an apple and it would float. You're probably thinking, “You promised to learn something new.” You would be right! Here we go! Did you know that the pull of gravity is known as the “gravitational pull?” The strength of the gravitational pull is depended on the size of the object. If the object is larger than the gravitational pull is stronger but if the object is smaller than the pull is lesser. So if you have a basketball and a golf ball which has a stronger gravitational pull? The basketball. What if you have a golf ball and a piece of paper (not in a ball)? The paper is bigger in size, but of course, if you dropped a larger object (more gravity pulling on it) it would fall first. Well not really. Air resistance!

Air Resistance

Air resistance does have an effect on gravity. This is fully dependent on the shape of an object. Think of a parachute, it falls down slowly. Why? There is more air under the paritute. You can see this as it pushes upward (the fabric is curved in the air.) What if that thin piece of fabric was cardboard? It would fall down faster. It wouldn’t have as much air supporting it. Now, what if it was a cannon ball? Well after tipping over, it would fall down very fast. Thanks to a man with the initials G.G. we know all of this and we can pass this information along to you!

“Who is G.G?

Galileo Galilei. In 1589, Galileo made history by performing an experiment right on the edge of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa! He had two cannonballs, one large and one small (but still scary) and he dropped them fully expecting that they would hit the ground at the same time and... they did! This proved his theory, air resistance and gravity work well together.

Let’s Look at it Like This!

Imagine you’re on a big hill with one other person and you start falling. The other person acts as air resistance and you act as gravity. You would want to have the other person there to help you fall slower. You are falling but the other person is helping you fall at a slower (and safer) over all rate. So, you can say “Be the air resistance and help gravity fall.”

Why Does This Matter?

It was promised that you would learn something new, if that happened or not, you may still wonder why this matters. This matters because it keeps us on the ground. While it might be cool to float everywhere, you would probably get nauseous. Besides all of that, the solar system probably wouldn’t be a thing. The Earth stays on the axes with the help of gravity. It would also probably be a permanent ice age, for half of the world at the very least. The Earth couldn’t spin so half the world would never face the sun. Let’s all be thankful for gravity and “May your dreams defy the laws of gravity!”

Chemistry is Cool

Poetry by Ava Chaikin

Chemistry is Cool!

Did you know Carbon Dioxide is CO2?

H2O is Water, as you have known.

But, what about calcium? Ca! Good for a bone.

Salt is Na and Cl mixed.

In contrast, glucose is C6H12O6

Iron is Fe,

Sounds good to me.

What about Zinc? Zn!

That is common, but what about Dinitrogen Pentoxide N2O5.

Potassium is K, found in bananas

Helium is He, have you seen it in the Savannah?

Now, this rhyme proved, none more that of the truth …

Chemistry is Cool!

*Just for fun, the longest chemical compound is titin; C169,719H270,466N45,688O52,238S911.

Field Hockey

by Charlotte Focarazzo

Were you on the Berner Field Hockey Team? Do you want to try out next year? Would you like to learn how to play field hockey for fun? If so, this is the article for you! Here, you’ll read about the following topics.

  • Positions

  • Equipment

  • Fouls

  • Tips

Positions

If you want to play field hockey, there are many positions to choose from. These include forward, midfield, defense and goalie.

When you play forward, one of your main jobs is to try to score. If you don’t have the ball, move up toward the net with your team and find an open spot where you can receive the ball!

As a midfielder, you should always be a passing option. Your job is to try to keep the ball near the opponent’s goal, but if it gets past the middle of the field, you still have to run back to support the defense and bring the ball back up the field. I was a midfielder, and from my personal experience, I had a great time. You run a lot and you get many opportunities when you play games!

Another position to try is defense. When you defend, try not to let the ball get past you! Always be aggressive and keep the ball on your stick. Pass the ball back up the field toward the opponent’s goal.

If you’re a goalie, you must work hard to save tricky shots when you play. Try your best and stay positive. Don’t worry if a ball gets past you, keep practicing and you might do better next time!

The field hockey positions are all unique, but they all take hard work to practice and are fun to learn!

Equipment

The equipment you’ll need to play field hockey is listed below.

  • Goggles: Goggles go over your eyes as protection.

  • Shin Guards: Shin Guards go on the lower part of your legs to prevent injury, in case you get hit by the ball.

  • Mouthpiece: You also wear a mouthguard. It feels weird at first, but you quickly get used to it after you wear it a few times.

  • Cleats: These are the shoes you wear to play. They’re made for turf and grass.

  • Stick: Using your stick is the only way you’re allowed to hit the ball.

Fouls

These are some of the most common fouls in field hockey.

  • Obstruction: This happens when you prevent an opponent from reaching the ball by being in front of them or using your stick.

  • Third-Party: This is when one member of a team blocks the opponent, and their teammate gets the ball.

  • Advancing: This happens if you use something other than your stick to advance the ball.

  • Hacking/Interference: This happens if a player uses their stick to hit the opponent’s stick. It could be accidental or on purpose. Either way, it will still be a foul.

  • High Stick: You will get a foul for lifting your stick up high near other players because it is dangerous.

Tips

Here are some tips for when you’re playing field hockey. You may already know some, and if you see a new one, you can try to use it!

  • Practice!

  • Don’t get discouraged if you do something wrong.

  • Keep trying!

  • Listen to your coach(es).

  • Apply the skills you learn at practice to the game.

  • Try not to be nervous during games.

  • Have fun!

  • Always come to practice prepared and remember your equipment.

  • Help your teammates and coaches.

  • Ask questions if you’re having trouble with something.

  • Work together with your teammates.

  • Keep moving on the field.

  • Be an open pass for your teammates.

I hope this article taught you more about field hockey or inspired you to try it out!

The 2020 NFL Draft

by John Tarpey

On April 23rd, NFL fans and sports fans all around the world had something good to look forward to, the 2020 NFL Draft. This year though, it was different - Coronavirus had hit the United States and basically the whole entire country was shut down. Now normally, the NFL Draft would be held in a city in which one of the 32 NFL teams play in, but due to the circumstances of COVID-19, that wasn’t possible, so the draft was basically reduced to a conference call. This NFL Draft was arguably the country’s biggest event since the quarantine, because baseball, basketball, hockey, etc, was all shut down. This was it. All of the college players would have their moment, but in an unprecedented manner.

The beginning of the draft started with the obvious: The Bengals selected LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, number 1 overall. This was a no-doubter. The man won the Heisman Trophy, the National Championship, and was just the overall best player. The second pick was another no-brainer. The Redskins selected Ohio State defensive lineman Chase Young. Again, another amazing player. The best defensive player in the draft. The third pick was another pick that was expected, but not definite. The Lions selected Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah, who was rumored to be the guy who would be selected, but it wasn’t an obvious choice like Burrow or Young. Then came along the fourth pick, who belonged to the Giants. They have been known as a team who isn’t exactly the best at selecting players, and this pick wasn’t horrible, solely because it fit their team needs, but others would disagree. They were projected to get Clemson linebacker/secondary Isaiah Simmons, but they went along and took Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas. This selection was understandable, but lots of experts thought that there were better tackles available. The fifth and sixth picks saw two quarterbacks selected. The Dolphins took Alabama Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was the most likely pick, and then saw somewhat of a surprise, in the Chargers selecting Oregon Quarterback Justin Herbert, who was rumored to possibly fall in the draft and maybe not be selected until the double-digit picks.

Then the draft started to take off, with the Panthers taking Derrick Brown, the Cardinals taking Isaiah Simmons, and then onto the receivers. The first receiver off the board was Henry Ruggs lll, who was ranked as the third best receiver in the country, with Jerry Juedy at number 1 and Cee Dee Lamb at number 2. The Raiders took a gamble on Ruggs though, because his speed and versatility could prove to be key. The Broncos ended up getting Jeudy and the Cowboys ended up with Lamb. The receiver train continued, however, with the Eagles taking Jalen Reagor, the Vikings taking Justin Jefferson, and the 49ers taking Brandon Aiyuk.

By midnight, the first round of the NFL Draft was complete. This was an extremely wild night that got lots of fans excited and took their mind off of current events (COVID-19). There was still 2 more days. There was the 2nd and 3rd round, and 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round which would take place on April 24th-25th. Rounds 2-3 were exciting, which saw players such as Clemson Wide-out Tee Higgins, Defensive Lineman A.J. Epenesa, and Cornerback Xavier McKinney taken. There were obviously still big names available, like a Heisman qualifier, Jalen Hurts. Hurts wasn’t even selected for a while until the Eagles made their move so they could solidify a back-up for the injury-prone Carson Wentz. This is why the Draft can still be fun to watch in the later-rounds. They are filled with surprises, shockers, and players who have 1st round talent.

By 8:00 ET on April 25th, the NFL Draft was complete. This had been an extraordinary experience for fans of really all sports, since it had attracted the highest NFL Draft TV Ratings. Commissioner Roger Goodell was announcing the names from his basement, but that didn’t stop the NFL community from cancelling the draft. They knew how much this meant to the fans, and they didn’t disappoint them. The commissioner announced that the 2021 NFL Draft would be held in Las Vegas, which was the location where the Draft was supposed to be held this year. The commissioner said his last goodbyes, and then it was done. 7 rounds, 255 selections, 3 days full of emotions, excitement, etc. There it was. The 2020 NFL Draft was in the books.

Interview with Cathy Reese

by Grace Hoffman

Cathy Reese is one of the most decorated coaches at the collegiate level. She has had a tremendous amount of success coaching the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team. Cathy Reese has led the Terps to fifteen national championships, the most of any women’s lacrosse program in the country! I have chosen to interview her because, in her thirteen years of coaching women’s lacrosse at the University of Maryland, Cathy Reese has mentored many aspiring girls of all ages, including me.

What are your pre-game rituals?

Pregame our team likes to eat at Bagel Place. I eat a Terrapin each time - which is a bagel with cream cheese and muenster cheese. Then I like my vanilla latte from Starbucks and we head to the locker room to hang out!

What is one thing that you think the sport of lacrosse really needs?

I think the sport of lacrosse needs more exposure and more officials. We need more people to get into officiating as our sport continues to grow - so we will all have enough educated officials to go around!

What’s the biggest obstacle you've overcome?

Hmmm. My son was hospitalized in 2013 for 31 days with a virus he just couldn't get rid of. I was sleeping in the hospital with him and then leaving and coming to practice with the Terps. It was so scary and a very difficult time for my husband and I. That was the hardest obstacle in my life, but as far as coaching goes - every year is different and every year is filled with different challenges and obstacles.

What has been the proudest moment of your career?

Proudest moments for me as a mom are the moments I see my kids smile and succeed at something they love and work for. As a coach it is the same. Winning the National Championship in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019 were moments like that. My team was so happy and smiling as they succeeded at something they loved and worked so hard for.

What is your favorite inspirational quote

Oh goodness, I have no idea. I love quotes. That is my favorite thing about social media is inspirational quotes and stories. I don’t think I could pick just one! Anything that is empowering people to believe in themselves and to treat others kindly is one of my favorites!

What are some things that you would say to your 11-year-old self or young aspiring girls lacrosse players?

I have an 11-year-old daughter and we talk about lacrosse all the time. I think the most important thing is just to love what you are doing. Have FUN. Sports are fun - they should be fun. I think sometimes they have come with too much pressure and I want my daughter to just remember why she started playing lacrosse is because she loves it.

Fast Fashion: Why it Affects the Planet and People

by Michael Cunnane

Fast fashion is a brand of fashion that has existed since the 1990’s. Brands like H&M and Forever 21 are fast fashion brands. Fast fashion is extremely wasteful. Because of fast fashion, the fashion industry has become the world’s second most polluting industry, below the petroleum industry. This is why I want to persuade you not to shop at stores like H&M and Forever 21.

You will be boycotting an industry that provides its workers starvation wages.

The fashion industry provides its workers with barely enough to survive in places like China and Bangladesh. This is incredibly low and people there make the same in a month as someone in a western country would make in a few days. This is awful and some people do not even make a wage at all. For example, the minimum wage in Bangladesh is 6,000 taka per month which amounts to about only $90 a month. Compare that with the minimum wage in New York State which is currently about $14 an hour. Even with the cost of living in Bangladesh that is barely or even not enough to feed yourself or your kids. Not to mention child labor being legal and many forms of the UN definition of torture and legal slavery being violated on more than one occasion. Not only that but overseas employers who outsource jobs China and Bangladesh don’t even legally have to pay that minimum wage.

You will be protecting the environment.

The fashion industry is the world’s second most polluting industry. It contributes to climate change at an alarming rate, and in areas like China, where most of the factory jobs are outsourced, has by far the worst air quality in the world. It also sucks up the earth’s resources. For example, the making of one shirt takes up 2,700 liters of water. The fashion industry also has more carbon emissions than the airline industry and the maritime shipping industry combined. Even when you donate to thrift stores, that stuff usually goes to be turned into industrial wiping rags, helping pollution and the endless cycle of human rights violations and pollution continues.

You can start by going to local businesses instead which helps your local economy.

Instead of going to places like H&M or Forever 21, try going to local mom and pop shops.

In conclusion, fast fashion is extremely harmful not only to the planet, but to people in third world countries. So remember, don’t shop at H&M or Forever 21.

First Day of Spring

Creative writing by Ava LaDouceur

I am in my bed trying to sleep, but for some reason, the sun keeps peeking through the window keeping me awake. It doesn’t make sense though, it’s supposed to be cold and cloudy, it is still winter. Well, it is technically spring, it’s the beginning of April, but still, we didn’t get any warm days yet this year. Fine, I give up. I can’t sleep. I look out the window and to my surprise, it’s sunny and almost warm looking. After the long winter I thought it would never come, I thought I’d never been able to walk outside without 20 layers of clothing. But it has finally come. It’s the first day of spring!

I put on leggings and a t-shirt and I grab my winter coat, (just in case). I run downstairs and see my parents aren’t in the kitchen as usual. I look through the back door and see they are on the back patio sipping coffee and chatting. (Is it really THAT warm?) The first step outside scared me, it was like I was stuck in a snowstorm and I had just stepped onto a warm beach. It was the first time I felt the warmth and sunshine since last September. “Morning Honey,” my parents said. I replied back still dazed and ran onto the grass. It was damp and warm. Still brownish from winter, but I could swear the sunshine made it look greener. I was thriving that moment and not thinking, I just dropped onto the grass and felt the sunshine against my skin. The grass was dewy and honestly, a little crunchy and dead but it still felt great. I felt my parents staring but nothing could ruin that moment, nothing.

It wasn’t until my dog licked every inch of my face that I was put back in the present. It was too warm for leggings so I changed into shorts and grabbed my bike. “Mom, can I ride my bike to Ava’s house?” She looked surprised as if I didn’t like being outside, but after the long winter of being a couch potato, it was understandable. “Sure just bring a sweatshirt in case you get cold.” She replied. It was a no to the sweatshirt idea so I opened the gate and biked away before she could say no. I rode my bike the two blocks without stopping until I reached Ava’s house.

When I knocked at the door her mother answered and said she would grab Ava because she was still asleep. Shoot, I forgot how late she sleeps. Ava sluggishly walked downstairs looking like she wanted to strangle me. But I made her get ready so we could ride our bikes through the neighborhood. We rode around the block a few times but instantly got bored. “You wanna go to Anchor Park?” Ava asked out of breath. I nodded approvingly and started going again hoping to get there quickly so we could rest. There was no sidewalk so we had to ride in the side of the street. With no bumps, and the sunshine, and breeze, I just closed my eyes and savored it as I rode my bike hoping that moment would never end.

“Hey hurry up!” Ava yelled twisting in front of me, the bike swerved and it was almost like I forgot I was on the bike for a second. But the second I realized where I was we were both at the park. We leaned our bikes against the tree and Julia took out the bike lock. She locked up her bike and so we went to the playground. Before doing anything else we ran the baby swings. I didn’t think a middle schooler could fit in one but I tried. My legs got stuck and Ava had to pull me out but it was still hilarious. I decided to stay away from the swings so we went on the actual playground and pretended we were five-year-olds, going up and down the slides and trying the monkey bars. The second we got bored with that we grabbed our bikes and went over to the baseball field.

The sand was really bumpy and when we went on it the bikes bumped up and down as we rode around. We played fake baseball pretending to pitch and bat even though we had never played a real game in our lives. I had just hit a ball (actually a pretend one) when I felt it. One or two drops at first but more came. It was raining. I thought the day was ruined and I was going to go home, but it was the first day of spring and I had to savor it. It was spring anyways and spring meant rain, so we ran around in it like complete maniacs and even rolling around in the dirt a little(which was a little of a mistake). Soon after that, we rode back to my house and texted her mom if she could stay over. We got raincoats on and played in my backyard feeling the rain. Rainy or sunny, it was spring and I wanted to savor that. Sometimes we need a break from inside and just hang out with the people we love, even if you get a little wet or dirty.

Sprouting Spring

Poetry by Jillian Matone

It is no longer Winter and the snow is done

The sun is out and Spring has begun

The skies are clear

It comes March, April, and May every year

A time where the grass is green and flowers bloom

When it rains people are relaxing in their rooms

The birds are all singing and harmonizing

Everyone is having fun and socializing

The dogs are being brought to the park,

running around and having a good bark

The ants aren’t leaving a crumb

Oh, finally, Spring has come

Bravest Adventure: Chapter Two

Creative writing by Owen Burns

If you haven’t read Chapter One in the Winter Edition 2019 you will not understand this. Please consider looking back at that issue to understand the story!

I couldn’t see anything but black all around me, I was lying down in some sort of bed. I stood up and looked around. Nothing as far as the eye can see. And suddenly I was hearing voices. “Look where you’ve ended up,” the Voice said. “Where am I!” I yelled. And then I saw the human in the bubble, “Have you done this?” I yelled at the human. The bubble started coming closer. And then the atlas in his right hand started glowing.

I woke up, I was in a bed in an isolated room. I turned to my side and saw a framed picture of a blob with a crown smiling over a canyon. I got up and walked to the door. I opened it and walked down a long hallway. I got into the kitchen and sat down in a large chair. Suddenly, Emmet walked in. “Hey, you’re awake,” says Emmet in a laid back voice. “Where is he, what happened!” I yelled. “Don’t worry we’re safe, for now,” said Emmet, “I would like you to meet someone,” I looked across the room and saw the same blob as the one in the picture. “Hi,” said the blob, “Nice to meet you.” the blob put out its stubby hand for me to shake, I shook it. “What’s your name,” I asked. “Slime Queen” She replied with a sad face. I asked Emmet once again, “Where are we?” “We’re In the Slime Kingdom” He replied. “No we are not, there’s no houses or citizens,” I said. “I know,” He replied. Worry flew through me, what has the person done? What has happened to the Slime Kingdom? “Do you guys know where he is?” I asked “No, he just disappeared” Said Emmet. “We have to go, now! I yelled. I jumped up out of my chair. I told Emmet we had to go and we could put Slime Queen in my backpack, after about thirty minutes he finally caved and said yes. We walked over to the door and opened it and I took a smell of fresh air. “How long has it been?” I asked, “About a month,” He replied. My heart started pounding as fast as it has ever been, about a month? I can’t believe this, I’ve missed so much. I pulled my backpack off my back and took out a wrinkly bag of popcorn I stole before we left. I tore it open and plopped two in my mouth. The popcorn is salty yet sweet, like caramel. Slime Queen jumps out of my bag and demands one of the popcorn. I give her the popcorn with the least amount of caramel. “Very good,” She says in a soft voice before climbing up my back and into the bag. We started walking. I asked, “What did I miss?” “Nothing really” He replied. I knew he was lying to make me feel better.

We were dying of dehydration about halfway through. We finally saw one of the kingdoms, The Water. I took out the same rope I had a month ago and threw it up the wall. We started climbing up the wall. We finally made it up the kingdom barrier, and when I was untying my rope I saw a market stand selling armor and swords and Water. We hopped down from the barrier and approached the stand. “What would you like?” Said a man with a cloak made of water “Hey, can we get some water?” Emmet asked. “Ummm…..Yes!” yelled the man. “What flavor?” He asked. I asked “What flavor? It’s water,” ''That doesn’t explain what flavor!” He said. “Umm… water flavor.” Emmet said with annoyance in his voice.

Suddenly, Slime Queen jumped out of the bag and hopped onto the table. The man bowed. “I am royalty and you will give them the water they deserve! Three please,” Slime Queen yelled. “Yes, ma’am.” said the man, and ran into the back. It was about an hour when we decided it’s taken way too long for just a glass of water.

We walked to the back of the market stand and noticed the man wasn’t there, in fact, no one was there. All of a sudden my head started to hurt… there wasn’t a market stand in front of me anymore, it was the human. “What do you want?” I asked, pulling out my sword. The human answered with “I want the past back”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“I want to bring the past back to our world.”

Bravest Adventure: Chapter Three

Creative writing by Owen Burns

(If you haven’t read Chapter One & Chapter Two I highly advise you do that.)

I snapped back into reality, “What is it,” asked Emmet. “We have to go,” I said urgently. “What happened?” Emmet said. “We have to go!” I yelled. I hurled up Slime Queens incredibly slimy body into my bag and started running as fast as I could. “Where are you going?” Emmet yelled “Oh, jeez” as he started running as fast as he could. I looked back and saw him put blue bubbles around his fists before flipping into a motorcycle, but not a motorcycle. It had the same build as a motorcycle, but it was a blue transparent color.

It took about ten seconds until he caught up to me and Slime Queen. “You never told me you could do that,” I said. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me,” Finnick replied. I went to the side of the motorcycle right next to me and jumped onto it. Slime Queen poked her head out the bag and screamed “Yahoo!”. But then, I look back at the water kingdom and see something, an aircraft hovering over the kingdom. “What’s that?” Me and Slime Queen say in unison. Finnick turns on auto-drive on the motorcycle, to look back with us. “Oh no.” Said Finnick. All of a sudden something drops out of the aircraft. “Hold On!” Finnick yells. Finnick turns off auto-drive and pulls the throttle all the way. Everything gets hot on my skin, and I see a huge explosion over the water kingdom, and in front of us, there is what looks to be a black hole. I glance back at the water kingdom, and nothing is there except castle ruins and fire.

We go full speed into the opening. And all I see for a while is black, until about ten minutes later when I see an assortment of colors mixing together. Pink, Purple, Blue, White, Light Green. Purple and blue clouds were floating about. “Wow, where are we?” I asked. “Welcome, to the Inbetween,” Emmet said. “What?” I yelled.

I was starting to think about the slime and water kingdoms. What happened to them? I was thinking about the slime kingdom the most, I never saw what happened to it. I blacked out too early. I wanted to ask but that would make slime queen sad, so I chose not to.

“Wow,” Slime Queen said from my bag. I turned my bag around and took slime queen out of my bag, so she could look around. “So,” I said, “How does this work, are there, like portals here?”

“Well, yes.” I saw Slime Queen’s eyes light up. “Woah,” Slime Queen said “Thas’ EPIC”

Emmet laughed. Emmet turned the motorcycle to the right. We were going really fast now and I saw a purple opening to our right. Emmet hard-turned the motorcycle to the right. The wind was blowing in my face so hard. My blonde undercut hair was getting all messed up and annoying, I moved my hair to the right.

We were in the black for about another eight minutes. I was starting to get tired. I closed my eyes when I heard a bang. “Wow,” I yelled. We got off the motorcycle and in front of me was huge hairy flying creatures, with huge lances on their side. I looked more and noticed that there were people with motorcycle helmets and blasters. Then we see one of the giant flying things come crashing at us. “Shoot!” Finnick yells. And then we see a different flying thing come and stab the other one with the lance moving it over to the side. Then the thing came down to the ground, and a guy jumped down. He had two blaster pistols, one in each hand. “What are you waiting for come on!” The guy took his helmet off and threw down a ladder. I gave Emmet a nervous look.

“Lets just, get on,” Emmet said, “It’s probably much safer up there than it is down here. The ground of this world was purple with many purple fires. I put my hands on the ladder and climbed up. There were many explosions exploding with blaster lasers going everywhere. Once I was on I noticed the flying thing was a bit bigger than an elephant. It was pretty adorable, it had wings as its ears, a big mouth, and huge eyes. It also had a lance on its side. I’m not going to lie I was pretty sad that the other flying thing was on the ground crying. It didn’t look as if there was a pilot, so I decided to go to it. I walked over to this crying thing and put my hand on it. It stopped crying and it looked over at me. Emmet walked down and asked, “What are you doing?” He then walked over and said “Look, we have to get on that with that and leave soon, he said that this war is getting too out of hand, they might blow this whole planet sky-high,” I looked over to Slime Queen who was on the flying thing with the pilot. I then looked over to the other flying thing, and I let go of it.

Emmet then asked me “You wanna’ take that?”

“Yeah, kind of.”

“Ugh, Fine”

Emmet then went over to the thing, mumbled and put his hand on the thing, his hand started to glow blue. And then I saw something I never thought would happen, Emmet fell to the ground.

The Weather Changer

Creative writing by Aidan Sherwin

When I woke up today, I saw that there were thick flakes of snow falling from the sky. Which was unusual because it was the twentieth day of March. You'd think it would've started to warm up by now, but it has been like thirty degrees for the past week or so.

So I got out of bed and walked downstairs. Strangely, everyone in my family was sitting there, eating breakfast in silence. I saw a chair assigned to me and a plate of waffles on the table. So I proceeded to sit down and start eating.

Ok, was this reality? Nobody said a word. All you could hear was the chewing of my family. 'Um, guys-- you ok? You're acting pretty strange." No answer. Was I dreaming? I seriously felt like this was all a dream. It's probably sunny outside, and around fifty degrees.

If this was real, my family probably thinks I'm crazy by now. I was smacking myself, pinching myself, but I still wasn't back in bed. I attempted to talk to my family, but they were buried in their food." Guys, wake up!" I yelled. My dad stared at me, with that look on his face when you know you've caused trouble. I managed to finish my waffles with the dreadful thought that this was the new reality. I'm supposed to have school today, and if it's not canceled by now, something is awfully wrong.

“I have to do something,” I said to myself. But it wasn’t like I could magically change everything like a wizard. I went back up to my room and grabbed my phone. I sent texts to all my friends to see what's up. They all responded fairly quickly. I was happy about that. My good pal Hayden got all excited about the snow, which contributes to his personality very well. But the rest of my friends were pretty weirded out by the day.

Me being me, I felt like I had to do something. “Uhhhh,” I groaned. “What in the whole wide, wide world could I do? There was a long, dead silence. I was relieved when I heard my ringtone, loud and clear. It was my friend Zachary. “Hey, this is weird,” he said. “Yeah, I know,” I responded. “Ummm, so do you think we can change this? In any way?” he asked after what could’ve been an awkward silence. “I was just thinking that!” I joyfully said. “O…..K, sure. Now we have to create an action plan,” he said. “Ummm, like-- how?” I was confused about what this “action plan” would be.

Eventually, we came to the conclusion that everyone was zoned out and not themselves because of the unusual snowfall. “Welp, that wasn’t very helpful,” I said to myself. So I just went downstairs to find my parents watching TV and my sister playing on her tablet. They were still silent and were still sucked into that same invisible abyss of nothingness. School was supposed to start in forty-five minutes, so I started to get dressed and do my other business. I was done in fifteen minutes. Then I sat down on a chair and pondered the day.

After a while, the phone rang. I said I’d get it, but my mom got up and said “I got it.” Wow, she actually said something! There she was talking on the phone. “Guys, school’s canceled today. You could relax,” she said after a few minutes of chatting. In my head I was like, Yessssss! Finally! Something normal! I ran back up to my room and sent texts to all my friends again. Of course, Hayden said he’d be playing in the snow the whole day. Everybody else was relieved.

I was still confused why it snowed this much in March, so I still felt like I had to do something. I bundled up, and made my way to the front yard. I looked at the sky just above my across the street neighbor’s house. I was thinking about shouting something, but then I’d feel like an idiot. I thought about it for a period of time.

I felt like I had to shout. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? So I counted down from three, and… “WEATHER! PLEASE STOP THIS! MAKE IT SUNNY! Please.” I think most people on my block were in their houses, so I wasn’t too embarrassed. I instantly saw those extraordinary white clouds rapidly moving out of town. The snow was also stopping, too.

“Woah.” I was very surprised. “Ummmm, what did I just do?” I wanted to tell everyone what I just did. I’m pretty sure Hayden won’t be very happy though. The only thing in my head right now is that nobody’s gonna believe me. I should probably just keep it to myself, even though I discovered a new “superpower” I had. I’d be better off. To be honest, some of the kids at school would probably bully me for saying something stupid like that.

I walked back inside thinking two things: How cool I am for doing something amazing like that, and how much of an idiot I am for shouting that. On the bright side, I’m pretty sure I could change any unwanted weather. I pinched myself to see if I’ve dozed off dreaming. If I was, I’d come back to reality. “Ow! Ow!” I shouted. So I’m pretty sure this was real.

So keeping this whole thing a secret turned out to work for everyone. If I ever see my friends begging (well, maybe just hoping) for a different weather status, I would shout at the sky whenever nobody was nearby. But I still always feel like an idiot every time I do. They just think it’s “magical” that such an occurrence could happen. To conclude, I’m happy with the choices I made and am hoping everything could stay this way.

Portals part 2: The new world

Creative writing by Dante Cunha

Mike felt weak, he could not breathe. The light surrounded him, he could not see, his eyes were closed. The area around him felt liquidy, like water. He started to swim upward, when he breached the surface he looked around and saw that the water he was swimming in was glowing. As he looked down he saw the portal he jumped through earlier below him, he looked around and saw an island about a couple hundred meters away from him.

When he got to the island and trudged up the sandy surface, it finally occurred to him that Joey was not there.“ I thought we fell through the same portal?”, thought Mike. Mike finally realized that the island was larger than he thought, and was lush with trees and other plants and vegetation. Later that night, (after a while of sitting on the beach), Mike walked into the forest. The faint buzzing of insects was the only noise that Mike could hear.

After about thirty minutes of walking, Mike entered a circular opening with no trees in it. He was startled by the noises coming from the pit in the middle of the opening. He slowly tiptoed until he was leaning over the edge. What he saw in the pit astonished him.

It was Joey!!...surrounded by hooded figures?! "Mike? Hellllp!! Wailed Joey. Mike swung his head back and forth looking for something to throw at the hooded creatures holding his friend. He saw a base camp in the distance that he thought belonged to the creatures. Mike focused on a weapon rack with a variety of swords and axes. He grabbed the lightest sword and jumped into the pit. All of the creatures turned towards him with their jagged claws. Mike swung... He opened his eyes to see if he hit anything. He saw the head of the creature laying a couple of feet from him on the floor. All of the creatures turned their heads at him, then lunged at him. He ducked under the first one that lunged at him, he didn’t know what to do about the rest of them as they ran at him.

A man, out of nowhere jumped down from the rim of the deep pit, he landed in front of Mike. using his large weapon that looked like a spear to fend off the beasts.” Come on kid, follow me,” said the man. Mike followed the man through the path of dead creatures.” Mmmh... This kid is heavy,” said the man as he picked up Joey. The man helped Mike climb out of the hole, the guy tossed Joey up and then climbed out himself. “Watch out, he’s my friend,” said Mike angrily.” Oh I'm sorry,” said the man sarcastically. Mike was finally able to notice his ragged clothing that looked like it was way too small for him, he also noted the large beard protruding from his face.”Wait,” Mike thought,” I've seen that bright blue shirt before,” he thought.”What’s your name?” said Mike to the man.”Troy” replied the man as he was picking up the passed out Joey.

“Troy! You're the kid who went missing in my town almost twenty years ago,” yelled Mike. He observed the surprised look on the man’s face.

After a long walk back from the creature basecamp, Troy and Mike (with the unconscious Joey) arrived at a small man made hut near the beach near where Mike ended up after he came through the portal. Mike sat in silence as Troy made tea on a kettle, Mike said, "Do you ever miss home?” “Sometimes.” replied Troy. Mike replied with.”Well...We're going to get you there.”

Immediately Joey woke up screaming and a portal opened up outside, the three of them ran outside and observed the vortex. Mike quickly noticed that the portal was closing as they sat there.”We need to jump in!” Mike said to Troy and Joey. They sprinted inside and grabbed some rations and weapons, then ran outside and looked at each other... Then walked into the portal.

Mike remembered the feeling of going through a portal. It felt like falling to the bottom of a pool.

Mike screamed as he fell, he landed next to Joey and Troy. His face rubbed on a silky surface, he stood up. He realized that they were on top of a gigantic butterfly. Troy handed him his sword that he stole from the hooded figures, as soon as it was handed to him he felt something whir at his head. He quickly blocked it with his sword . He looked at the other side. “An arrow?” said Troy. Mike heard another arrow whir by him. He followed the sound and saw the arrow had planted itself in Joey’s chest.

Joey groaned and fell on the butterfly’s silky back. Troy stabbed the butterfly in the back a little bit so it will land in a nearby tree. Mike finally realized that the biome they were in had many gigantic trees. Mike then glanced over and saw Joey fall From the butterfly’s back. Mike then did the only thing that could possibly save his friend. He jumped off the back of the butterfly after his friend.

Mirrors

A story by Gianna DiLucci

It was a day like any other. The sun shone brightly through the clear blue sky as I walked home from school. I was particularly excited as it was the last day before break. I continued to walk, however, I suddenly came to a stop. The street I have been walking on has been suspiciously quiet and isolated, but that wasn’t the reason I stopped. Right in front of me, a puddle sat on the sidewalk. Though it seemed to look...shiny? And it barely rains here. I was still in my thoughts until I snapped out and saw I was having some sort of intense stare with the puddle. Heh. Suddenly, the (water??) in the puddle started to...bubble? As the curious teenager I am, I look closer into the puddle. In the blink of an eye, a figure hand grabbed my hand and dragged me...into the puddle? I couldn't tell, as a blinding white light appeared as I lost the last bit of my consciousness.

When I was finally able to regain myself, I had noticed my surroundings have changed. I was in a white space that seemed endless if the intent was to leave. It was as close to a Void as you could get. I didn't even understand how I was standing, as there wasn’t even a floor. I felt sort of helpless as a small frown had started to appear on my face. Suddenly, I heard something. I knew now that I wasn’t alone anymore. There stood a figure. Except, the figure looked like, myself?? It was a girl of course, wore a cozy sweatshirt and had her hair in a ponytail. The only difference was she was wearing glasses and had a sort of shiny white appearance. “Hey there, Riho,” they spoke with a voice just like mine, causing me to flinch from surprise. Wait, they knew my name too? They obviously noticed how (disturbed?? confused??) I was, and continued to say “I know you may be wondering how you got here or who I am, but my name is Ohir but call me O, and we need your help.”

Note: Riho (REE-ho) & Ohir (OH-her)

There was awkward silence for a second before I finally spoke up for once, “How can I help with whatever situation you are in, and ´We´need my help?” It seems that the girl, now nicknamed O, quickly sighed but not in a bad way. “If you can tell, i'm a Reflection,” she started to speak, “In the Over Realm, the part of the world you come from, everyone has a counterpart of sorts. These counterparts act as their own beings but are always connected, like if one died the other would go down with them,” I slightly shivered at the thought. O seemed to notice this, but continued speaking, “All was well for many years, until a supernatural curse that rapidly swept across where I live, the Mirror Realm. Ever since then, the Mirror Realm is slowly crumbling out of existence. If the realm goes down, we’ll all cease to exist,” I thought about this for a moment. Cease to exist? This sounds serious. She continues, this time we clearly locked eyes, “Remember the puddle? That was my calling to you, Riho. You are the one that will help restore my realm, and our world. You are the key to our future,” she held out her hand towards me, “Join me, and help save our future, and the whole world's future. Together.” It seemed that I stared at her outstretched hand for a second, but I truly knew exactly what I would do.

I put all my past confusion and doubt behind me, and outstretched my hand to meet hers. As our hands met. I felt a light spark inside of me. ‘My Child, you have now fulfilled your true destiny. Go, and save our worlds.’ a soft voice had spoken, smooth like silk woven from gold. I did not question what they were for now, as a genuine smile had appeared on my face as me and O were transported away from our white abyss, and into the unknown. I knew, deep down in my heart, that this would be an adventure of a lifetime.

I am ready.

Emperor Zerg’s Caves

Creative writing by Vivienne West

The Great Emperor Zerg and his sidekick Miss Evil Bunny were about to take over the world. Good thing I was there to stop them. It all happened late last night when I was watching TV. It was starting to get late, so I went to go brush my teeth. In the bathroom, I saw a giant shadow. At first, I thought it was mine because I’m pretty tall. It wasn’t! Next thing I know, I saw a giant monster standing before my eyes!” Hello. I am the great monster of the deep. Please follow me,” he said in a dark menacing voice. He led me through a portal that led to an underground cave. The cave was made fully of diamonds. The monster took one look at my shocked face and said,'' They're cool right? I got them from the Caves of Gordela.” As I ventured deeper into the cave, I noticed that there were bones and skeletons everywhere! The monster explained that the bones were of the gegornanas he eats. Next, he told me to come with him into the “red room.” I wish I had known that the red stood for fire. As soon as I entered the room, I was shocked because it was just an empty room. Next thing I knew I’m lifted up into the air by a huge geyser of fire. The surprising thing was that I didn’t feel burned. But why? Then, I felt that I was all wrapped up in Miss Evil Bunny's ears. She was protecting me.

Creative Writing

It was the year 2046. The world has been inflamed in the war for 25 years. Since the war started, the world has been on pause. Nuclear weapons have decimated many countries. Since then, the war has ended, but the world was never the same as it was.

It’s the year 2146. The 100 year anniversary of the end of the war. Things have changed since then. Robots control most of everyone’s daily activities. Most former countries lay in ruins. Three empires remain. The Neo-American Empire (The Western Empire), The Neo-Japanese Empire (The Eastern Empire), and the Neo-British Empire (The Middle Empire). The three empires are pretty friendly with each other, but minor conflicts still occur. I live in the Western Empire. Today in school (yes, even in the future we still have to go to school) our history teacher (who was a robot) taught us about old cities in the United States. One that stood out to me was “New York”. My great-grandparents had lived in New York before the flood. The flood took place over a period of time instead of just happening at once. My grandparents say it was called “Climate Change.” The sea level has risen approximately 17ft since then. The world has changed so much since my great-grandparents were born. In their time the least they had to worry about was protesters asking for peace during the so called “Vietnam War.” They supposedly had this device called the “iPhone.” Now there’s no need for that, as there’s robots doing all of your biddings.

Even though I am in the “future” I wasn’t expecting the next invention. One day, out of the blue, 3 scary looking men in black suits came up to my door. As I opened the door, the big one in the middle began to talk. “You have been selected to test a top secret government project.”

Sonic the Hedgehog: Movie Review

by Lillian Dooher

One of the newest movies, a 2020 film released on Valentine’s Day, Sonic the Hedgehog, is getting a lot of great reviews! This lovable blue anthropomorphic hedgehog as of right now has 64% Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 93% on the movie about him. If you love Sonic, you should go to your local movie theater, grab some popcorn, and go see it now! Trust me, you don’t want to miss the newest supersonic movie!

Many Berner Middle School students enjoyed the movie. Olivia, a sixth-grader at Berner says, “I thought that the sonic movie was really good. Also, I like how they gave a lot of information about Sonics’ past. It made me think of Sonic differently and made me wonder what it would be like to live the life of Sonic the Hedgehog.”

Here are some professional movie reviews on Sonic the Hedgehog:

Common Sense rates it 8+ and parents and kids rate it 9+.”Watching Carrey is an absolute delight; his comedic genius exudes more wattage than Sonic's moments of heated emotion -- and Sonic's outbursts cause power outages.”-Tara McNamara from Common Sense Media (⅘ star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

”This big-screen take on Sega’s anthropomorphized cobalt cannonballer is mostly cute and cuddly.”-Adam Holz from Plugged In

“The plot of Sonic The Hedgehog is paper-thin and the film's tone strikes a shrewd balance that will certainly allow it to play well across a broad spectrum of audiences.” - Sify Movies

“One of those clunky live-action adventure comedies with a digitally animated generic weisenheimer plopped into the middle of it.” - Owen Gleiberman from Variety

Sonic the Hedgehog: Movie Review #2

by Jonathan Mulhern

The Sonic movie has been through a long, rough ride. Rumors spread that Chris Evans was involved as Sonic’s police friend. Then a poster was released with Chris Pratt as the cop. (In the end the role went to another Marvel movie veteran, James Marsden.) The movie’s release date was delayed after intense criticism of the original design sent creators back to the drawing board. Then, it had a great design, but I still felt that this movie wasn't going to be that good. Maybe it was how the human actors interacted with the CGI Sonic, or something. I guess it didn't matter what the flaws were because it made $216.4 million worldwide in the first ten days and went on to become the highest grossing video game movie ever! Probably just nostalgic parents wanting their kids to experience what they did when the first game came out.

SPOILERS!!!!! You have been warned. So the movie starts with baby Sonic being chased by the Echidna Tribe, a clan that wants his powers (they were in the games). He finds Longclaw, an owl who has been taking care of Sonic for years, who gives him his iconic yellow rings, throws one, pushes him through, and BOOM! Sonic is safe in Green Hills, Montana. There he watches local police officer Tom, or “Donut Lord”, and longs for a friend. One night he is playing baseball by himself and goes so fast he causes a power outage in several states. Obviously, the government gets involved and they hire Dr. Robotnik, who tracks Sonic down and finds him hiding in Tom’s house. During the ensuing chase and battle Sonic and Tom bond and fight the bad guy together. There is a post credit scene where Robootnick turns into Eggman and exclaims “I’ll be home by Christmas!” I don't know how you feel about it, but I would give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐.
