SEPTEMBER

Hello Everyone!

I am here to support Multilingual Students in grades K-2 here at Alex Green Design Technology Magnet Elementary School. Here is an update on a few of the fun activities the students are doing this month...

Sight Word Challenge

This will happen each month. This is a pre-assessment for me to see where the students are. The students will have the opportunity to get their sight word ball when they meet their sight word goal. The goals vary between grade level. The winners from August are Bahar Hosseini and Faida Steven with a tied score of 85% correct.

5 Up sentence I SPY...

We work on communication skills through the game of I SPY. Students will state what they observe in the form of a 5-word or more sentence. The topics differ between grade level. This is a great way to start the year back up. This will guide them in their daily writing activity.

Phonemic Awareness

Knowing letter sounds and letter names are the first steps to having phonemic awareness. We will also learn about vowels and vowel teams. This will be assessed as frequent as needed based on the students' Individual Learning Plan.

PLT Notice

I would appreciate it if you all could have the students Computers ready before PLT time begins. This will limit the time lost on the student's short instructional period with me. I have to go to multiple rooms to gather the kids before each class, so this would be greatly appreciated.

All-Star Student!

This will be a moment of praise for one of my model students from grades k-2. I will also have pictures from time to time from class to show parents and teachers how well students have done in the classroom. This Shout out goes to the ALL-STAR Eisa Eisa! We have come a long way from last year. He is writing well and learning his letter sounds.

Translation and Interpretation

The Office of Translation and Interpretation Services SharePoint is up to date! Office of Translation & Interpretation Services - Home (sharepoint.com)

The SharePoint includes:

  • 2023-24 Parent Outreach Translator Assignments
    Instant over-the-phone interpretation through Acutrans
  • Bank of translated documents
  • Guidelines on requesting translation and interpretation services

MEETING WITH PARENTS ALONGSIDE AN INTERPRETER? CHECK OUT THESE BEST PRACTICES!

Check out these best practices for your next meeting when interpreters are present.

ILP Information

Students Individual Learning Plans can be viewed in PULSE. ELLevation is no longer being used as well as clever. We're waiting for PULSE and the TDOE to provide and add some data before we do anything with ILP's so we will discuss each student's ILP as soon as that is situated. 🙂

Ellevation

  • The platform is in read only form for 23-24SY; All ILPs will be housed and monitored through TN Pulse

  • Since TN Pulse EL data isn't loaded yet, continue to use Ellevation to view EL Data. To access Ellevation, go through your MyMNPS Folder

Transitional Students and Grading Policy!

Transitional Students are students that have exited the program due to receiving a 4.0 Composite Score and 4.2 Literacy Score on the WIDA Access test. They should still be receiving EL support strategies in the classroom despite not having EL Teacher services.

The grading policy from the EL handbook states that EL students should not receive any grade lower than a 70%. This does not mean give them a 70%. Make sure that you have provided the necessary EL supports for their success. We must advocate for all our students.

Family and Community Resources

EL strategy/supports

This is a list of EL supports that can also be found in SharePoint. This will help students with writing, vocabulary, conversations, text supports, questioning supports, and thinking maps to guide students thinking process.
