...And Away We Go!

Congratulations to all of our staff, students, and families on completing nearly a full month of school! As September quickly comes to a close, fall is definitely in the air with cooler temperatures, football season, and leaves beginning to change colors. Our students are settling into the routines and rhythms of the school day, and we are so proud of the growth we are already seeing. We are excited to watch them continue to learn, grow, and lead throughout the year!

Even though we have only been back for a few weeks, we have already accomplished so much! One of the first milestones of every school year is Back to School Night, and this year’s event on September 17 was a wonderful success. More than 300 families joined us as our teachers welcomed parents into their classrooms and walked them through a typical day in the life of an EMK student. Our PTO was also on hand to welcome both new and returning families and share ways to get involved in our school community.

On Friday, September 25, EMK held our first Leader in Me Assembly of the year! Our entire student body gathered to review our schoolwide expectations, the 7 Habits, and what it means to be a leader at EMK. Students were reminded that they have the power to “Unlock the Magic of Leadership!” Lightning, our school mascot, helped get everyone excited, and our kindergarten students had the opportunity to meet Lightning for the very first time!

Our first habit of focus is Habit 1: Be Proactive. Through morning meetings, classroom lessons, and teachable moments throughout the school day, students will learn that being proactive means taking responsibility for their choices, actions, and attitudes. We will continue to connect these everyday moments back to the many ways our students can demonstrate leadership at school and beyond.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15, and EMK is excited to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures and traditions of Latin America. Each class will learn about a Latin American country and decorate the area outside of their classroom to showcase what they discover. The fun has already begun as classes select their countries, and our hallways are starting to come alive with colorful, culturally rich displays!

We also have several exciting events coming up. On Friday, October 2, the East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company #1 will visit EMK to teach our students about fire safety. With an engaging presentation and a chance to see a fire truck up close, it is sure to be a hit with our students!

Our EMK PTO will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. Our PTO plays an important role in creating special experiences for our students and supporting our teachers and school community. We encourage you to come out, meet other EMK families, and learn more about how you can get involved. One of the exciting events already being planned is our Book Fair, which will take place during the week of October 5. We are looking forward to this annual EMK tradition!

As the year progresses, we also want to continue hearing from our families. There will be many opportunities to connect with building administration, and we encourage you to use our Ask an Admin form whenever you have a question, suggestion, or feedback to share.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead as we continue to work together to support our students and strengthen the EMK school community. Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping make EMK such a special place to learn, grow, and lead!

Sincerely,
Ms. Foulks & Mr. Sheridan

Leader In Me

Social Emotional Wellness at EMK

Leader In Me is a Social Emotional program that highlights and encourages teachers and students to develop and nurture student leadership, foster a culture of trust, and boost academic success. This approach empowers students, educators, and families with essential leadership and life skills.

The EMK staff engage with students daily on how to be the best versions of themselves by reflecting on their choices and celebrating student success. This week, we had our first Leader In Me assembly of the school year where we reviewed the 7 habits and what it looks and sounds like to me a leader at EMK.

Leader in Me is rooted in the writings and research of Stephen Covey where focus is placed on:

Be Proactive: Take initiative and responsibility for your choices, rather than being a victim of circumstances.
Begin with the End in Mind: Set clear goals and a personal vision for your future before you start acting.
Put First Things First: Prioritize your most important tasks and activities to achieve your goals.
Think Win-Win: Strive for solutions that are mutually beneficial and satisfying for all parties involved.
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood: Practice active listening to truly understand others' perspectives before expressing your own.
Synergize: Work together with others to achieve more than you could individually by valuing each person's strengths.
Sharpen the Saw: Maintain a balance in your life by taking care of yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

We look forward to sharing EMK's progress on our journey this year!

Please see some updates form our school nurse, Ms. Schrier.

As students and staff return to school, it is inevitable that germs and colds will spread. However, there are some precautions that we can take to limit this. At school, we encourage students to wash their hands and cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough.

Please view this fun video to teach and remind your child the importance of washing their hands.

There is also information on when to keep your child home when they aren't feeling well or have a fever.

We appreciate your partnership in keeping all of our Mustangs happy and healthy!

If you have any questions about health protocols at school please don't hesitate to contact he nurse office at cschrier@ewrsd.k12.nj.us.
