Principal's Book Club
For the first time in three years we relaunched our in-person Principal's Book Club this past month, reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Big thank you to the Museum of Jewish Heritage for bringing a powerful Holocaust survivor testimony to our students. Also big thank you to parent, Stephanie Samperi-Gonzalez for helping organize the event. At MS 50 we believe that independent reading is critical to developing a life-long love of reading. If your child is ever not sure what to do for homework, ask them to read their independent reading book!
Classroom Spotlight: Social Studies
6th Grade -Ancient China
7th Grade - Westward Expansion
In this unit, students are studying U.S. expansion and reform from 1800–1860. Students will immerse themselves in a multitude of perspectives on the growth of the United States in the first half of the 19th century by discussing focus questions, reading and analyzing a rich collection of diverse primary and secondary sources, examining artifacts, and interpreting images, such as paintings and photographs, maps, and political cartoons. Students are learning about a variety of events and topics including: The Lewis and Clark Expedition, The Monroe Doctrine, U.S. Acquisition of Territory, the Erie Canal, New York’s Trail of Tears, Immigration: Irish Potato Famine, and the Declaration of Sentiments.
8th Grade - Expansionism and Imperialism
Vision Screenings Friday
We will be holding free vision screenings for all students this Friday! The New York Vision Program of Helen Keller International will be coming to MS 50 to provide vision services. This vision screening does not replace the need for a more comprehensive eye exam. The process will include a brief, universal screener for all students and individual meetings with an eye doctor for students who need it. Students who need them will be able to choose from a variety of glasses options on the same day, all for free! If you would not like your child to receive this free vision screening, please complete the opt-out form on Operoo.
School Surveys
School Surveys were backpacked home with your students last week Friday! Please fill it out and return it either to a mailbox, to school, or complete it online at the link below.

There will be an in-person meeting next week Wednesday to discuss next steps.
SYEP Applications Open!
Is your student 14 years old or older and interested in a paid work and learning opportunity this summer? The Summer Youth Employment Program offers NYC students the chance to learn about career opportunities and make a difference in their communities through paid project-based activities. Applications for SYEP are due March 31. Click below to apply or contact Ms. Sostre for more information.
