Updates from U-32

Principal's Update
Dear U-32 Families, Students, and Caregivers,
On our first days of school, our campus comes alive with the energy of our community of young people. We start the school year slowly to build reconnection in school and outside of the building. I continue to return to the themes of Relevance, Community and Connection, and Equity and Belonging throughout the year. On Thursday and Friday our 11th and 12th graders talked about how we could deepen our culture of community through student voice. Some of their ideas are already in the works like monthly community meetings.
Tuesday, we will continue to connect across our entire school community with our first community meetings and a school-wide opening circle to welcome the seniors and inspire our year. Thank you for entrusting your learning with us. I hope I will see many of you on Thursday for our Open House. There will also be opportunities to share in conversation.
Best,
Becca

Welcome from the SAP - Lauren Cleary
Greetings U-32 community! I wanted to take just a moment to introduce myself and give you all a little information about my role. The acronym SAP (historically Substance Abuse Prevention) has shifted in recent years to reflect the more expansive nature of prevention work. Student Assistance Professionals (SAPs) work to develop student’s assets, while supporting other school professionals and services in bridging the gap between prevention and treatment efforts in substance misuse issues. I will be working closely with teams to identify youth at risk of developing substance misuse issues, intervene and when necessary refer them to community agencies for more specialized or intensive services.
Students should feel free to stop by and families should feel free to reach out with questions. Connection is Prevention - I look forward to connecting soon.
Please review the 2025-2026 Student/Family Handbook. Below are some updates to the handbook that are important to note. Students will review this in TA and we encourage you to review the handbook at home as well.
Vape Sensors
To support the well-being of our students, and to address an essential problem at U-32, we have installed vape sensors. These sensors will allow us to better support students with substance misuse and comply with our B7 and C2 Policies. With the help of these sensors, our support team can gather more accurate information regarding the use of vapes/e-cigs in our buildings.
How it works. When a student is near the sensor and using a vape, the detector will go off and notify members of the student support team. The camera attached will record the student near the sensor. We have placed them in areas where vapes are often used, like bathrooms. If a sensor goes off in a bathroom, the connection to video is not in the bathroom, rather the entrance to the bathroom. There will only be recording of students coming and going from the bathrooms.
What will happen? The Dean of Students or an Assistant Principal/member of the administration team will follow our procedures. We will interview students, and contact guardians of those who set off the sensors.
Food Deliveries
To maintain a safe and focused learning environment, food deliveries (from services such as DoorDash, UberEats, Grub Hub etc.) are not permitted for students during the school day. Deliveries create disruptions, pose safety concerns, and can place an added burden on office staff. Students are encouraged to bring lunch from home or utilize the school meal program. Food deliveries are only permitted for after-school activities.
