Cayuse
4 Cayuse Vineyards - French Inspired Washington Wine – 6 Bottle Lot
Christophe Baron grew up among the vineyards and cellars of his family's centuries-old Champagne house, Baron Albert. His sense of adventure, however, led him to become the first Frenchman to establish a winery in Washington State.
While visiting the Walla Walla Valley in 1996, Christophe spotted a plot of land that had been plowed up to reveal acres of softball-sized stones. This stony terroir, reminded him of the cobblestones of the southern Rhone valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in his native France. Acquiring the 10 acres, he planted his first vineyard in 1997, naming it after the Cayuse, a Native American tribe whose name was taken from the French cailloux--which means, rocks. Since then, it has grown to five vineyards, encompassing a little more than 45 acres.
What was considered by many a foolish gamble on that field of stones, has been rewarded year after year with some of the most acclaimed wines in the region-and in the nation.
