Our two Destination Imagination teams, the Tic Tac Squirrels (Collin, Katelyn, Teddy and Zac) and the DI Legendz (Ava, Lily, Abby, Mitchell, George and Jack) spent an amazing week in Kansas City at the DI Global Finals Competition. These 10 students met up with hundreds of top scoring teams from all around the world. Our students presented their solutions successfully, attended workshops, made stickers and pins in the Fablab, did science experiments with mad scientists, learned secrets from a magician, participated in the KC Quest where they went all around town solving clues and puzzles, pin traded with lots of other countries, and enjoyed a block party, in addition to the opening and closing ceremonies!

We are very grateful for all of the support from our school, friends, family, and community! We extend our sincere gratitude to the FAW community for their generosity to help our students reach their goal in order to participate in this incredible fun-filled educational experience!

Last week I reviewed some of the reasons students are currently coming to see me, and most of the issues coincide with the time of year: “Spring fever,” summer colds, allergies, bugs, rashes, and dehydration. Being injured is also at the top of the list (especially scraped knees since most are wearing shorts). I have also seen a few students who have become a bit overheated while playing outside. When this happens the best treatment is to simply move to a cooler environment, rehydrate, and rest. Being overheated can become severe, however, and lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which are medical emergencies. (When in doubt, seek help!) While spending time outdoors can be loads of fun, it can also present some challenges. To be prepared, you may want to keep a few things on hand: bug spray, sunscreen, aloe (after sun care), itch cream, tick remover, ice packs (or Ziploc bags), and water (for drinking and cleaning).
