CSTP Spotlight π€©
CSTP 1: Engaging and Supporting All Students
CSTP 1, Engaging and Supporting All Students is defined as "Teachers apply knowledge about each student to activate an approach to learning that strengthens and reinforces each studentβs participation, engagement, connection, and sense of belonging."
We will highlight an element each week in October.
CSTP 1C: Student Backgrounds and Family Engagement
Teachers meaningfully engage and form partnerships with families, guardians, and caregivers in addressing each studentβs learning needs, health, and well-being and are responsive to the range of economic, social, cultural, linguistic, and community factors that affect student development and learning.
Element 1C Example Indicators
Teachers:
β’ 1Cβ1: Determine the most effective strategies for communicating with families, guardians, and caregivers, including those from under-resourced communities and those who communicate in languages other than English, to explicitly and systematically increase positive connections.
β’ 1Cβ2: Apply evidence-based principles of effective family engagement in partnering with families, guardians, and caregivers to achieve equitable outcomes for every student.
β’ 1Cβ3: Create reciprocal partnerships with families, guardians, and caregivers to better understand studentsβ and familiesβ lives and to work together to enhance student
learning experiences.
β’ 1Cβ4: Engage in reciprocal communication about learning, academic, and socialβemotional expectations with families, guardians, and caregivers and share systems of
instruction and support.
β’ 1Cβ5: Maintain responsive, understandable, timely, and accessible communications with families, guardians, and caregivers about student progress and accomplishments.
CSTP 1 Instructional Strategy Support
How often do you reach out to families with positive news about their child? Consider a weekly or even daily email, message, or phone call to let parents and families know what their child did well during the day. Taking the time to share good news will help later when you may need to call with more challenging information. This builds relationships and trust with families and shows them that you care about their child.
Candidate and Mentor Talking Points π¬
Each week we will provide several talking points that should be reviewed during your weekly meetings together.
- Structure or scripts for phone calls home
- Curriculum needs and resources revisited
- Content issues/concerns/needs
