Mentor Training

We are grateful for three really engaging Mentor Training options! It's been fun to hear about and see Cognitive Coaching in action, and hear about the great learning from Arise and Mentoring Matters. Mentors, please be sure to complete the brief reflection on your MT #1 and MT #2 tabs that demonstrate your learning. Thank you!

Justin Lam

Justin and I are in our 3rd year of coaching and we have developed a strong relationship. Justin is always prepared for observation and is thoughtful and reflective about how to best impart new information to students. He is open to feedback and makes changes to his practice when necessary. Justin has been a great addition to our Emery team! He is a hard worker and a team player. He is reflective in his practice and great with his Kindergarten students. He is patient and playful at just the right times. They love him and they are learning from him at the same time. We are all lucky to have him at our school! --Amy Biesiada, Mentor

CSTP 1: Engaging and Supporting All Students

CSTP 1, Engaging and Supporting All Students is defined as "Teachers apply knowledge about each student to activate an approach to learning that strengthens and reinforces each student’s participation, engagement, connection, and sense of belonging."

We will highlight an element each week in October.

CSTP 1C: Student Backgrounds and Family Engagement

Teachers meaningfully engage and form partnerships with families, guardians, and caregivers in addressing each student’s learning needs, health, and well-being and are responsive to the range of economic, social, cultural, linguistic, and community factors that affect student development and learning.

Element 1C Example Indicators

Teachers:

β€’ 1C–1: Determine the most effective strategies for communicating with families, guardians, and caregivers, including those from under-resourced communities and those who communicate in languages other than English, to explicitly and systematically increase positive connections.

β€’ 1C–2: Apply evidence-based principles of effective family engagement in partnering with families, guardians, and caregivers to achieve equitable outcomes for every student.

β€’ 1C–3: Create reciprocal partnerships with families, guardians, and caregivers to better understand students’ and families’ lives and to work together to enhance student

learning experiences.

β€’ 1C–4: Engage in reciprocal communication about learning, academic, and social–emotional expectations with families, guardians, and caregivers and share systems of

instruction and support.

β€’ 1C–5: Maintain responsive, understandable, timely, and accessible communications with families, guardians, and caregivers about student progress and accomplishments.

CSTP 1 Instructional Strategy Support

How often do you reach out to families with positive news about their child? Consider a weekly or even daily email, message, or phone call to let parents and families know what their child did well during the day. Taking the time to share good news will help later when you may need to call with more challenging information. This builds relationships and trust with families and shows them that you care about their child.
