April 2026 Family Newsletter
Delwood Elementary School

Updates from the Principal
Dear Delwood Families,
This month has flown by! With the spring thaw finally behind us and the grass finally turning green, we are entering one of the most exciting—and fastest-moving—stretches of the school year. It's hard to believe we are now in April and the end of the school year is fast approaching.
I would like to start by recognizing our third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students for their hard work on ISASPs these past few weeks. They put great effort and focus into their work and I am proud of their hard work!
Thank you to each family who took the time to fill out our Measurable Results Assessment survey. We had students in grades 4-6 and all school staff take the survey as well. I'm sharing the results below...we saw growth in almost every area from fall to spring.
I also wanted to thank our community partners and families who were a part of our first Career Day- it was great to see students excited about learning new things and loved being able to take some souvenirs home with them.
As we are nearing spring break (Friday through next Tuesday), I have been talking with students about reinforcing expectations. As the weather gets warm and we get closer to summer, we have noticed the need for reminders on school behavior and expectations. This week I reminded students about our rules for morning recess and the cafeteria (lunch primarily). These rules will be shared on Class Dojo as well. Once we return from break, I will touch on these rules again to ensure all students stay safe and make appropriate choices.
We will be having a school-wide community service learning project on Earth Day cleaning up around our local community. If you have any suggestions or ideas on things that our students can do to help in Delmar, please call the school and let me or Melinda know.
As the weather fluctuates, please remember to send your children with appropriate layers for outdoor recess. We want everyone to enjoy the fresh air safely!
Thank you for your continued partnership and for making Delwood such a wonderful place to learn.
Warmly,
Julia

Updates from our Teachers
Mr. Romsa- TAG
Dear Families,
I hope this message finds you well. We are grateful for your continued partnership and excited to share updates from our classroom this month
.
Important Announcements
We are now in Week Two of our Bridges unit.
Students are studying the four basic types of bridges: beam, arch, suspension, and truss.
Teams will construct a bridge using popsicle sticks and glue and test how much weight each bridge can hold.
Celebrations from the Month
Students completed two separate data collection projects — excellent teamwork and careful recording!
We finished our metric measurements unit — students practiced using rulers, measuring tapes, and graduated containers, and showed strong progress in estimating and recording metric lengths and volumes. We are proud of the curiosity and effort students showed during these hands-on lessons.
Additional Information
Classroom routines: We continue to reinforce group collaboration, lab safety procedures, and careful data recording during all hands-on activities.
Communication: Expect a short update and photos from the bridge-building and testing activities after the events. If you prefer not to have your child’s photo shared, please remind your child’s teacher or return the classroom photo opt-out form.
Support at home: You can help by asking your child to explain the four bridge types and to describe how their team recorded and analyzed test results — these conversations deepen learning and confidence.
We appreciate your partnership.

Hello Delwood families!
As we close up our soccer unit, I just wanted to give you all a quick update on what we have been working on. For K-2, we have done some individual practice with follow the leader videos, we have done stations, and we have gotten to play some really fun games. For the most part, we just used the soft dodgeballs to do most of our activities and it worked out really well! Towards the end, we challenged ourselves a little bit by using a bigger soft soccer ball! Some of the skills we worked on were quick taps on top of the ball, “tic tok” which is them working on using the insides of their feet to tap the ball back and forth, and the roll and trap which is them just rolling the ball off the bottom of their foot then putting their foot on top of the ball to “trap” the ball or stop it. Two big things that we focused on were “soft touches” and “close control”. We did an activity where if the music was playing they would dribble their ball with their feet all around the basketball court and if the music stopped they would trap the ball. They did an awesome job of following the cues of soft touches and close control. We were also able to work on our kicking skills which they loved because they couldn’t wait to kick the ball in the net! The main things that we talked about with kicking was following the cues of step, plant, and kick. We also talked about when you kick a soccer ball you want to either use the inside of your foot or the laces. It was really neat watching them really try to focus on those cues, and they noticed when they did that, how much more control they had when kicking the ball! For 3-6, we used the bigger soft soccer balls for most of our activities. 3-6 focused on the same two things when it came to dribbling the soccer ball with their feet, which was “soft touches” and “close control”. 3-6 also did some follow the leader videos. The only difference was that some of the skills we worked on were a little more advanced than K-2. An example of that would be doing the quick taps, but they had to do the quick taps while moving in a circle around the ball. K-2 just did it stationary. Another thing they worked on was a “kick up” which was them basically dropping the ball down to their foot and then kicking it back up to their hands. A fun game that we played was dribble knockout where everybody had a ball and they would dribble the ball with their feet around the basketball court using soft touches and close control and then they could also try to knock the ball away from others using their feet. They really enjoyed playing that game! We play that game during our basketball unit as well, but they would dribble the basketball with their hands and then try to knock the basketballs away with their hands while keeping their dribble going. We also played a fun game called soccer spot shot! I divided them up into teams, and they would dribble the soccer balls out to a dot spot and try to kick it and make it into one of the goals. Dot spots were worth different points, so if they went for a dot spot that was far away that was worth more points. It was fun watching them strategize with their teammates and also following the cues of dribbling and kicking while doing the activity. As we wrap up our soccer unit this month, we will be looking forward to doing some baseball/softball activities, as that will be our next unit! As the weather gets nicer, we will also try to get outside for some of these activities! 3-6 will also be doing their fitness testing again. We made some goals based on how we did in the fall, and we are looking to accomplish those goals here in a few weeks!

Leader in Me Alphabet with Mrs. Kleinsmith
In Mrs. Kleinsmith intervention room, we continue to build our Leader in Me alphabet. T is for leaders who use their brains all of the time to think! Think before speaking, reacting, and responding. U is for understanding. Leaders try to understand others’ point of view and ideas. Leaders listen to understand. V is for value. Leaders show that they value others by listening to and including them.

We are down to our final quarter for these students at Delwood Elementary!! This year has been flying by. It has been great working with these students this year and am looking forward to finishing the year strong! We had a talk this morning about how to finish strong at Delwood and leave a good impression with all the adults in the building. With the help of you at home and us at school, I think we can make this a great final quarter.
In class, we are finishing up a unit in algebra and will be starting another unit on algebra. I know for some algebra can be a struggle, but I think the students have surprised themselves at how much they are able to do! In literacy, we are studying the Titanic using primary and secondary sources. Our new science unit is about temperature and energy in the atmosphere, and in social studies will be doing a project on a country they choose.
Looking forward to the warm weather being here more consistently and having some enjoyable time with the students as we finish up the final quarter!
