Message from Principal Scharmann
Dear Students, Parents, and Families,
We are settling into the school year, and it has been wonderful to see our students finding their routines, building connections, and becoming involved in everything CMS has to offer. This newsletter includes several upcoming events, activities, safety reminders, and opportunities for students and families.
I also need to ask for your help with an issue that is becoming increasingly problematic. We are seeing a large number of students gather at Starbucks after school without adult supervision. I understand why students enjoy having time with their friends after school, but this particular activity has repeatedly led to problems.
Conflicts, inappropriate comments, social media posts, and other poor choices that begin at Starbucks and other businesses in the Vasco plaza often carry over to campus the following day. These situations affect friendships, disrupt learning, and require significant time from teachers, counselors, and administrators to address. They can also create safety concerns for the students involved.
Starbucks employees are not responsible for supervising our students, and CMS staff are not present or able to monitor what happens there. I am asking families not to allow their students to go to Starbucks after school unless they are accompanied by an adult. Please make sure your student has a clear plan to go home, attend a supervised activity, or be picked up promptly after school.
This is not about preventing students from spending time with their friends. Middle school students need opportunities to socialize and build relationships, but they still need appropriate adult supervision and support. Your partnership in setting this boundary will help prevent problems and keep students safe.
Please take a few minutes to review the rest of this newsletter for information about upcoming events, attendance, athletics, safety, and other opportunities at CMS.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support,
Brian Scharmann

Message from Vice Principal, Ms. Shiffrin Chi
Have you set up your Schoology parent account yet? If not, we encourage you to do so! A parent account allows you to see your child's grades, upcoming assignments, and any overdue work — all in one place. You can even link multiple children to a single login. It is also a great way to communicate directly with your child's teachers and stay engaged in their school experience.
If you already have an account from last year, simply go to this link to log in. If you have forgotten your password, select "Forgot Password" and you will be on your way. If you are still having issues, please email Ms. Shiffrin Chi.
If you have never created an account, keep an eye out for a direct email from Ms. Shiffrin Chi with your personalized access code and step-by-step instructions to get set up.

Message from Athletic Director, Ms. Mendoza
Registration is now open for anyone interested in participating in our athletics programs this year! Here are the requirements for being cleared to participate in Christensen Middle School athletics:
- Register for all sports that the athlete is planning on playing this year HERE.
- All athletes planning on participating will need to have an updated physical. We require a signed physical by a doctor within the last 12 months. Here is a link to a physical form that can be used: LVJUSD Physical Form. Other forms signed by a doctor may be acceptable but must specifically clear athletes for participation in sports. Physical forms will only be accepted through Home Campus (link above).
- CMS athletes must have received a 2.0 GPA on the previous trimester's final report card. Incoming 6th graders are not held to this requirement until an official grading period has been completed.
Our athletic seasons are underway! For game and meet schedules throughout each sports season, please visit the CMS website calendar.
The tentative start dates for the athletic programs we offer are listed below. More specific information for each sport will be communicated through the morning announcements and this newsletter as each season approaches.
- Cross Country (Co-ed) - August
- Boys Basketball - August
- Girls Basketball - October
- Boys Volleyball - January
- Girls Volleyball - February
- Wrestling (Co-ed) - March
- Golf (Co-ed) - April/May

Please reach out to our Athletic Director, Sydney Mendoza, at smendoza@lvjusd.org if you have any questions.
Message from Counselor, Ms. Feinberg
Now that the initial excitement of the new school year has settled, our hallways are officially buzzing with routine. Students have mastered their schedules, found their spot to eat lunch, and are truly getting into the rhythm of middle school life.
With the academic groove starting to get established, this time of year often brings a shift toward the social side of growing up. Middle school is a major period of discovery, and "finding your place" often comes with a few shifts in friend groups, trial and error, and learning how to build healthy relationships. It is completely normal for students to reevaluate their connections, seek out new interests, or feel a bit unsure as social dynamics evolve.
Here are a few ways to support your child’s friendship journey from home:
Encourage Quality Over Quantity: Remind them that having one or two trusted, supportive friends is far more meaningful than trying to fit into a large crowd.
Practice Active Listening: Ask open-ended questions like, "Who did you sit with at lunch today?" or "What made you feel supported by a friend this week?"
Normalize Social Shifts: If friendships evolve or drift, reassure them that changing interests are a natural part of growing up, not a personal failure.
Prompt Conflict Resolution: Encourage them to talk to friends rather than about them when minor misunderstandings arise, focusing on how they feel.
I am always here to help students build self-advocacy, empathy, and strong social connections. Please don't hesitate to reach out if your child needs a little extra support navigating their social world this school year!

Messages from Librarian, Ms. Grasseschi
What’s On in the CMS Library
Check out the September 1 edition of “What’s On in the Library”! This month, Mrs. Grasseschi shares a review of Out of My Mind, recommends The Bletchley Riddle, and highlights upcoming library activities. Students can also participate in Book Door Dash beginning September 1 and stop by during lunch on September 15–16 for Make a Bookmark Day. Be sure to check it out and see what’s happening in the CMS Library!
Book DoorDash: Books on the Way!
Looking for your next great read? CMS students can now use Book DoorDash to have library books delivered right to their homeroom! Search the library catalog for a book you want, click and hold “Book DoorDash,” and let the library know where to deliver it. The library will take care of the rest!
More books. Less waiting. Happy reading, Cougars!
🚲 E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Reminder
As more students ride e-bikes and e-scooters to school, we want to make sure everyone is riding safely and legally. Please review the Livermore Police Department’s Rules of the Road with your student. Important reminders include wearing a helmet when required, following bicycle and traffic laws, and understanding that different types of e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and dirt bikes have different age, licensing, and riding requirements. For example, Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old, and off-highway motorcycles/dirt bikes may not be ridden on public roads, sidewalks, or parks.
Families are encouraged to review the attached guide together so students understand the rules before riding to school.
Every Day Counts!
Regular attendance matters for both student success and our schools. In California, school funding is based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA), which means that when a student is absent—even for an excused absence—the district does not receive funding for that day. Improving average daily attendance by just 1% could mean approximately $1.5 million in additional funding for our schools.
Whenever possible, please schedule appointments and other activities outside of the school day and help us make every day count at CMS!

No School, Monday 9/7
