Head Cheetah Message
Families,
The first week of November brought many exciting annual events, including the EHEPTO Family Pasta Night, and the grade 3 Cheetah Council Assembly. Additionally, our Scholastic book fair boxes have arrived; so Mrs. Flannery will spend the next several days setting up her fabulous displays. The book fair will run from the 17th-21st, with evening hours on the 19th and 20th. We hope you’ll stop by to browse when you’re here to conference with your learner’s teacher(s).
Have a wonderful weekend!

PTO’s Annual Family Pasta Dinner
On Thursday evening, the EHEPTO hosted their annual Family Pasta Dinner and Raffle Night! The Memorial School cafeteria looked beautiful, the food was delicious, and families enjoyed being served by staff members. And, some lucky winners took home amazing raffle baskets. Thank you to the EHEPTO for all you continue to do for our school community!
Grade 3 Choir Has Officially Begun
Mrs. Maldonado held her first official chorus rehearsal with a large group of grade 3 singers. We can’t wait to hear them perform for us in the future!
Good Luck To Our Cheetah Council Candidates
On Friday morning, many brave third graders stood up in front of the entire grade level to read individual speeches about why they each feel they belong on the Cheetah Council. I was so VERY impressed with our cheetahs’ writing skills, their composure while speaking in front of so many people, and their earnest desire to contribute to our school community. They should all feel incredibly proud of themselves. Qualified applicants will be added to the applicant pool, and individuals will be drawn from the pool next week. As one candidate said in her speech… if not selected, we should congratulate our classmates and be proud of ourselves for trying. I couldn’t agree more.
Kindergarten Wit & Wisdom Celebration
Kindergarteners celebrated all that they learned in their first Wit & Wisdom module with a final lesson and dance party. Throughout the module, they learned all about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, a legendary and highly paid tap dancer, actor, and singer who was famous during the first half of the 20th century. So as a special treat, with coins taped to the bottom of their shoes, our young learners got to watch some tap dancing performances, and then try out some of the moves themselves! There’s nothing better than putting your new learning right to use!
Socktober Thank you!
Thank you so much for your support! As a school community we were able to donate 465 pairs of socks to the East Hampton Food Bank to help our neighbors in need this winter!
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

Music
Hello Memorial Families! It has been an exciting month of learning in the music room.
Preschool: Students enjoyed some fall-themed songs and poems this month! We sang songs about pumpkins and Jack-o-lanterns! They also pretended to cook “Pumpkin Stew” and put all sorts of silly ingredients in while practicing the steady beat.
Kindergarten: Students are now expected to demonstrate four different voices at the beginning of each music class: Talking, Whispering, Calling, Singing! If asked, they should be able to tell you about the poem we use to practice these voices. When we practice our singing voice, students are learning to make a “perfect match” when it is their turn with the singing ball! They also explored the musical opposites fast and slow this month.
First Grade: Students worked on keeping a steady beat while singing or listening to music. They also learned about the concept of rhythm and contrasted it with steady beat. They learned that tapping the rhythm of the song matches the words while tapping the beat makes hands tap at the same speed through the whole song. Favorite songs and games this month included “Pumpkin Stew” and “Pass the Pumpkin”.
Second Grade: Students focused on their music listening skills! They enjoyed listening to Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and practiced analyzing and evaluating the song! They also got a chance to compare three different performances of the song: orchestra, voices, and electronic. Students also learned about a new rhythm that gets two beats, called a half note. They practiced reading and writing this rhythm throughout the month.
Third Grade: Third graders discovered the names of the two new notes on our solfege staircase: low sol and low la! They also discovered a new way to perform rhythms, by using numbers to count them! We made a fun connection to both fractions and pizza while learning this new skill! Now, when reading rhythmic patterns, students are expected to count the rhythms with numbers. We are getting all of our music literacy skills polished up so that we’re ready to begin our recorder unit soon!
New Choir! Third grade students have had the opportunity to try our new third grade choir by attending two open rehearsals over the past month. This coming Thursday, the students who have decided to officially sign up will attend rehearsal! I am looking forward to making music with these young musicians.
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program, and reach out on parentsquare anytime!
Mrs. Maldonado
Kindergarten students channeled their inner conductor! They took turns conducting the group and leading them to sing a song fast or slow, following the movements of their baton!

Coaches Corner
Math
Number Corner is an essential component of our math program, Bridges in Mathematics. It is a skill-building program that revolves around the classroom calendar, providing daily practice as well as continual encounters with broader mathematical concepts. Number Corner is 15-20 minutes of engaging instruction. The program features short daily workouts that introduce, reinforce, and extend skills and concepts related to critical areas of study at each grade level. These workouts include: calendar grid, calendar collector, computational fluency, number line, days in school (K/1), daily rectangle (2) and solving problems (3). Throughout the month during our Number Corner block, students have the opportunity to play games or activities, use manipulatives and are introduced to math vocabulary.
Each month of Number Corner, there is a new pattern introduced in the calendar. We have included an image of your child’s Number Corner calendar from last month. Have a discussion with your child about the patterns that were incorporated during the month of October, along with the other components of Number Corner.
On The Math Learning Center website, you can explore as a parent to find out what key skills and concepts are practiced during Number Corner throughout the year through the concept outline. When checking out the website, be sure to click on the appropriate grade level on the left hand side of the screen.
