JODEE DeROSE

Dear Stallion Families,

We hope you have an amazing and restful Fall Break! As a reminder, there will be no school Monday, October 12th through Friday, October 16th.

When we return, get ready for some seasonal fun as we kick off Candy Wars to feed the Candy Monster in preparation for Fall Festival. Please keep in mind that Fall Festival is a family event, and parents and guardians must remain with their children throughout the evening.

Looking ahead to our Halloween Parade and parties, please keep district dress code guidelines in mind as you plan your student's costume. Costumes must be school-appropriate, with no masks, weapons, fake blood, or gore allowed. Additionally, students should wear school-appropriate clothes underneath their costume or bring a change of clothes to wear for the remainder of the day.

As we enjoy these fall traditions, we appreciate your continued partnership in prioritizing regular attendance. Missing 10% of the school year, just two days each month, or 18 days total across the year qualifies a student as chronically absent, and both excused and unexcused absences count toward this total. Attending school on time every day helps students build foundational reading and math skills, stay connected with peers, and feel confident in their learning. Thank you for helping your child build these positive habits early!

Finally, a couple of important community updates. Ballots for the 2026 Colorado General Election should have arrived in your mailbox, and you can check your voter registration status or track your ballot by visiting GoVoteColorado.com.. Furthermore, the Foundation for Douglas County Schools is currently accepting Apple Awards nominations to honor exceptional educators and staff who inspire a love of learning in our students. Please consider taking a moment to nominate a deserving Cherokee Trail team member by visiting AA Nominations — The Foundation for Douglas County Schools all nominations are due by October 26th.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership, support, and Stallion pride!

Warmly,
Jodee DeRose - Principal

COGAT INFORMATION COGAT INFORMATION

Dear Parents/Guardians,

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th grade (November).

5th Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of Nov. 9th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in grades 3 and 4, and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.

  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.

  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the DCSD Gifted & Talented Referral Form.

  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.

STAMPEDE SAFE LIST STAMPEDE SAFE LIST

To make entry faster during large school events, we are introducing our new Stampede Safe List! One week prior to major events, we will send out a Google Form—simply submit your name, email, and phone number by the deadline to get pre-cleared. On event day, visitors on the Stampede Safe List can bypass the main office line and grab their event-day sticker directly at our fast-track entry table.

Important details to keep in mind:

  • First-time visitors: To qualify for the Stampede Safe List, you must have a physical driver’s license scanned into our Raptor Security System. If you haven't scanned your license yet, you will be notified via email to stop by the office before the event (highly recommended to avoid long event-day lines!).

  • Unregistered attendees: Anyone who misses the form deadline or is new to Raptor must check in through the main office with a driver’s license.

  • Daily visits: Standard school visits still require checking in at the front office with a driver’s license or Raptor Safe App QR code. (Tip: Pull up your QR code before entering the lobby to avoid spotty cell coverage!)

  • Always bring your ID: Technology can be unpredictable! Please always bring a physical driver’s license or state ID whenever you plan on entering the building.
