CTE Spotlight: Teaching & Training Program at Dayton High School
Lyon County School District is proud to offer students exciting opportunities to explore meaningful career pathways through our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. At Dayton High School the Teaching and Training Program is a course designed for students who are interested in education, leadership, and working with others. The Teaching and Training course at Dayton High School is taught by Shanna Krueger, who provides students with meaningful guidance, mentorship, and authentic learning experiences throughout the program.
This hands-on course gives students a real-world look into careers in the teaching profession while also building valuable skills that apply to many future career fields.
What Students Learn
In the Teaching and Training program, students develop both professional and practical skills that prepare them for success beyond high school. Throughout the semester, students engage in experiences such as:
Building professional resumes and career portfolios
Practicing public speaking and communication skills
Learning how to plan, demonstrate, and teach lessons
Working with groups and gaining leadership experience
Developing confidence in professional and classroom settings
These skills are not only essential for future educators, but also highly transferable to careers in business, healthcare, public service, and more.
Real-World Experience Through Internship Opportunities
A unique component of this course is the internship-style experience that takes place toward the end of the semester. Students have the opportunity to step into real educational environments, gaining hands-on experience that allows them to explore what teaching looks like in action.
This internship piece helps students connect classroom learning to real careers and gives them a chance to discover whether education is the right pathway for their future.
Dual Credit Partnership Opportunity
This is also a dual credit course, made possible through the partnership between Lyon County School District and Western Nevada College. Students can earn college credit while still in high school, giving them a strong head start on their postsecondary goals.
