Westfield Principal Kristen Ulery
Westfield families:
I hope everyone had a great spring break. It was fun to see the kids this week and hear about their spring break adventures!
Don't forget to register for next year! If classes are full, priority to stay at Westfield is given to those who register first, so please register as soon as possible.
Have a good weekend!

Placement input for next year
It's time to start building classes for the 2026-27 school year already. Class placement decisions are complex, and your child’s classroom teacher, the grade-level teaching team, our specialists, and the administrative team each play a role in the process as we work to place every child in the best possible setting. We consider learning styles, student personalities, class size, as well as students' academic strengths/needs. We strive for a heterogeneous class with a full range of abilities.
Families also know valuable information that can help us place your children. If you are interested in sharing information for placement consideration, you may submit a letter to me no later than Friday, April 17. Please keep in mind that I will accept the following information from parents:
- If there is information about your child’s learning style that you feel is pertinent, please share this information.
- If an older child in your immediate family had a teacher and you’d like to request that a younger sibling not have the same teacher, please share this information.
- If you feel that your child should be separated from a specific student to optimize your child’s learning experience, please share this information.
Please note: We cannot honor parental requests for specific classroom teachers. Factoring in all of the above variables as we create class lists is a delicate balancing act, and we will take each request into consideration as we do our best to meet the needs of all students.
Please complete 2026-27 registration as soon as possible
Registration for the 2026-27 school year is now open. Families should use the individualized “SnapCode” that was sent in the U.S. mail to complete registration. If you did not receive your SnapCode, or you misplaced your SnapCode, please contact our school to re-prove residency.
It is important to complete registration as soon as possible so the district can plan for staffing and supplies. Delaying registration could mean your student is not able to attend their neighborhood school. More info: https://bit.ly/3PXiVhJ
Student council fundraiser
Student council is holding a Pie-It Forward fundraiser to raise money for Lurie Children's Hospital. Some staff members have agreed to be "pied in the face" at our April Character Strong assembly. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch, there will be a jar for each teacher. Put money in the jar for the teacher you want to see get a pie in the face, and the three staff with the most money in their jars will get a pie in the face.
Westfield is officially an arboretum!
Westfield has officially been designated as an arboretum by the Morton Arboretum's ArbNet. This is a very exciting milestone on a journey that started at the 50th anniversary of Westfield in 2018. A tree was planted to commemorate the anniversary, and we have been planting trees every year since in the hopes of reaching arboretum status. Special thanks are due to Karl Mennecke for the vision and leadership that got us here and the PTC for donating the trees that got us the designation.
All school reading of Class Dismissed
We have started an all school reading of the book Class Dismissed in preparation for a visit by author Allan Woodrow on April 28. We will be reading the book and participating in activities. In addition to sponsoring the author visit, PTC purchased a copy of the book for each student to take home. This is a very exciting opportunity for our students to engage with a published author!

Resources for helping your child through difficult times
Tragedy can affect a nation or a single family. Some crises happen suddenly while others build over time. Each situation can be difficult for children to understand and challenging for families to navigate. Our school has a counselor, social worker, and psychologist available to help students and families with strategies for transparent, age-appropriate conversations. The district has also posted additional resources at www.ccsd89.org/crisis
Students, families can report crises and threats through Safe2Help
Students and families can confidentially call, email, or text the Safe2Help tip line to report bullying, threats, or classmates in crisis. Students or families can call (844) 4-SAFE-IL, (which is 844-472-3345); text SAFE2 (which is 72332); email Help@Safe2HelpIL.com; or submit tips through the online form. Safe2Help submissions are monitored every hour of every day. More info: https://bit.ly/3BPxObO
