Principal's Message
Kei te mihi mahana ki a koutou, nga uri o Midhirst kura. Warm greetings to to our families at Midhirst School.
This week I will be sending out surveys to our whānau. This is to gather information to support the 2027 Strategic Plan. I have also gathered student voice, Iwi voice, and teacher voice. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Senco have analysed most of the data trends for the last two years and we are waiting for the Term 4 testing to be completed. This will inform what our goals / school wide targets for 2027 will be. It will also inform the Professional Learning we will be doing for 2027-2028. The Strategic Plan gives direction for Midhirst School for the next two years (this is to align with Board elections). The survey will close on Friday 13 November. Those children of whanau who complete the survey will receive an ice block.
We have noticed a number of students going backwards and forwards in the classrooms during break times. At times this is part of games they are playing. This has led to damage to the doors. We will now say no to going into the classroom during break times. Nga Motu tamariki will be allowed to go into their class during breaks due to their age and needs.
Several years ago representatives from Ngati Maru Iwi worked with our senior students to produce a variety of writing samples. Those samples have been published in a book (Ngā Tāngata Tūturu). We are have an official launch ceremony at Stratford Primary School on Monday 16 November. Those children who have had published writing in the book will be invited to attend and receive a copy of the book. Midhirst has at least 10 students writing published in the book. We will reach out to those whānau to invite them to the ceremony. Midhirst School will also send some of our kapahaka rōpu to tautoko.
We have Athletics (Toko, Midhirst, and Taranaki) events taking place in the next 4 weeks and Junior Tabloids in week 6. Please keep an eye out for the information.
Nāku iti noa, nā
Yours Sincerely
Graham Sands

News from the Classrooms
Junior Syndicate
Kia ora whānau, nau mai ki te Wiki tuatoru, welcome to Week 3 of Term 4!
We hope everyone had a great weekend and that the tamariki are ready for another exciting week of learning across our Junior Syndicate!
A reminder that Junior Tabloids Day is coming up on Wednesday 18 November! This will be a fun opportunity for our junior tamariki to participate in a range of sporting activities, work together as a team and show our school values. We will continue practising and preparing for the day over the coming weeks. Please make sure tamariki bring their hats to school, as we will be spending time outside during the warmer weather.
This week in writing, the tamariki will be developing their writing skills, with a focus on writing to instruct. Across Weeks 3–4, we will be learning how to write clear, step-by-step instructions. This will provide great opportunities for the tamariki to organise their ideas, use sequencing words and explain how to do different things.
In Ngā Motu, the tamariki will continue writing about Firewise, focusing on letter formation and spelling CVC and CCVC words.
In Panitahi, the tamariki will continue developing their writing by using conjunctions to join ideas and practising long vowel sounds.
In Taranaki, the tamariki will focus on editing their writing to ensure it makes sense. They will also continue learning about suffixes and how to use them correctly to show different tenses.
We are also lucky to have Whaea Nikki joining Taranaki every day for the next four weeks. She is beginning to lead small-group and whole-class learning, providing some great opportunities for the tamariki. They are loving having her in the classroom, and we look forward to the learning and activities ahead!
Have a fantastic Week 3!
Ngā mihi,
Ben, Meg, and Marg
