Dear Norfolk Public Schools’ Families:

As February kicks off, there is an electrifying energy in the air, filled with excitement and endless possibilities for what is to come. Even with the winter chill outside, our schools are radiating with the warmth of learning, growth, and meaningful connections. This month has a special way of infusing our hallways with an infectious energy, perhaps it is the thrill of reaching the halfway point of the academic year, or the joy of witnessing students and staff alike embrace the spirit of kindness, compassion, and friendship. Whether it is through acts of generosity, moments of creativity, or simply the shared sense of community, February reminds us of the heartwarming connections that define our journey together. In classrooms across our division, I have had the joy of witnessing countless moments of discovery, collaboration, and achievement. Our students continue to impress me with their curiosity and resilience, while our dedicated teachers create engaging learning environments that inspire growth and creativity. It is truly a privilege to be part of such a vibrant, dynamic community where learning is celebrated every day.

February gives us so many exciting opportunities to celebrate together. From the thrill of learning about the incredible triumphs and achievements of African Americans in our community and national history through engaging classroom activities, to the heartwarming joy of sharing kind words and appreciation for one another, this month truly brings us closer as a community. Our schools are embracing these moments, weaving them into daily lessons and special projects that help our students grow not just academically, but as caring members of our community.

As we navigate through these winter weeks, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to have such a supportive school community. The partnership between our families, staff, and students continues to be the foundation of our success. Your commitment to education and your trust in our schools make every day special.

Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism about what we will accomplish together in the months to come. The enthusiasm I see in our students' faces and the dedication I witness from our staff tell me that our best days are still ahead.

Together, we are creating an educational environment where every student can thrive, dream, and achieve.

Wishing you peaceful moments and bright spirits.

If You Miss School, You Miss Out!

The Willard Model Sharks went swimming around in Dolphin territory just before Winter Break when they tapped Suburban Park Elementary for the Norfolk Public Schools' School-to-School Attendance Challenge. The Dolphins picked up after break with a Mardi Gras-themed spirit week that featured lots of beads and masks as they demonstrated perfect attendance and a mantra to “Show up and Shine!” The week concluded with a festive parade, when the Dolphins handed over the flag to Crossroads School.

Across the division, schools are creatively and enthusiastically highlighting the importance of being present, on time, and ready to learn each day…proving that attendance counts at NPS!

This friendly competition underscores a vital message: When students miss school, they miss out. Chronic absenteeism—missing 10% or more of school days for any reason—has a significant impact on learning. It can hinder early reading skills, middle school achievement, and even high school graduation.

Let’s keep the momentum going! Together, we can continue this positive trend and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Please keep the lines of communication open by letting us know if there is something standing in the way of getting your child(ren) to school. We want to help so that we can continue to build on our promising growth in academic achievement in the coming year, as well as strive toward equity and excellence for all… no matter what!

Remember, if you miss school, you miss out!

Linking Literacy to Legacy: Norfolk Public Schools’ Emphasis on Literacy Instruction Started More than a Century Ago

We are excited to share an amazing opportunity for readers in grades 4 through 12! The Norfolk Public Library is hosting a Book Review Contest, and the English Office is encouraging all students to participate.

Students will have the chance to share their thoughts on a book they’ve read and come together to share their love of reading. First, second, and third-place winners will be selected at each grade level, recognizing their creativity and insight.

This contest is a fantastic way to celebrate literacy, build critical thinking skills, and introduce teachers, parents, and students to a variety of great books.

Parents, this is also a wonderful opportunity to encourage your child to engage with books and express themselves. After all, literacy is empowering, it opens doors to knowledge and imagination.

Students, talk to your teacher for contest details, deadlines, and submission guidelines. You can also visit ReadWriteThink to read sample reviews and discover more books that may be perfect for you.

Let’s inspire a love of reading and showcase the incredible talents of our students!

The NPS English Office appreciates the work and support of the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library! As always, for further information on literacy across Norfolk Public Schools, please visit the division’s Literacy Plan.

Resources for Our Students and Families–Immigration Enforcement

As the cornerstone of a proudly diverse community, Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) is dedicated to providing all students with the opportunity to reach their fullest academic potential. We remain committed to upholding state and federal laws, alongside our division policies, to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all. Our priority is to protect and nurture the well-being of every student. NPS will continue to work diligently to maintain these essential safety protocols for the benefit of our community.

The purpose of this addition to our newsletter is to share important information regarding a recent memo issued by the federal government. The new guidance rescinds a 2021 Department of Homeland Security memo that previously designated schools as protected areas from immigration enforcement actions. Norfolk Public Schools remains committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment, as outlined on pages 129-131 in the 2024-25 NPS Student Handbook. We will continue to prioritize the well-being and success of all students.

It is important to note that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records. This generally means that schools must have written permission from a parent or eligible student (at least 18 years of age) in order to release any information from a student’s education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without parental consent, to comply with a lawful subpoena.

Federal law enforcement officials generally need a warrant to gain access to a student. If a warrant is presented, then a parent or guardian will be notified, and permission must be granted before officials can interview a student. The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority. During this time of uncertainty, we want our families to know that we are here for you. If you need support, please reach out to your child’s school.

In addition, we encourage you to access the following resources to better understand the support available to you and your family. These resources provide valuable information and guidance on safety protocols and community support services to ensure a positive and informed experience for all. Please take the time to review them, and do not hesitate to reach out for any further assistance or clarification.

  • Immigrant Legal Resource Center Step-by-Step Family Preparedness Plan

  • US Department of Education Educational Resources for Immigrants, Refugees, Asylees and other New Americans

  • Virginia Department of Social Services Immigrant Services

In addition, please be reminded to check the emergency contacts you have provided to your child’s school and ensure that the documentation has accurate and up to date contact information for all who are authorized to pick up your child. Always notify your child’s school immediately if there are any changes.

Again, we understand that this change may raise concerns for some of our students and families, and we want to ensure you are informed about protections within our schools. Please know that we are here to support our community and provide the necessary resources during this time.

My experience with EELC has been amazing. My thoughts on Art with nature and food have been challenging but have been extremely fun. Hearing their stories about how they tried the same recipes at home with their families along with great interest in what we will be doing next lets me know that we are headed in the right direction.
