A mid year message...

Dear Families, students and staff,

As we reach the end of Term 2, I would like to take this opportunity, in Mrs Parker's absence, to wish all members of our College community a safe, restful and enjoyable winter break.

This year, many of us are especially looking forward to the longer holiday period, which will provide valuable time for students to spend with family and friends. It is also an opportunity to rest and recharge after a busy semester and prepare for the exciting months ahead. For our Year 12 students, this extended break offers a chance to reflect before entering their final term at the College, as they begin preparing for examinations, completing course and certificate requirements, and planning for life beyond school. I am sure this additional time will be warmly welcomed by students, staff and families alike.

The final weeks of the term have been incredibly busy and filled with wonderful opportunities for learning, growth and community building. Our Year 11 Retreat, led by Dr Salvatore De Luca with the support of Year 11 Dean, Ms Catherine Wildish and other staff who attended, was a tremendous success. Students enjoyed the opportunity to strengthen friendships, reflect on their personal journeys and consider how they can positively lead and serve others.

Our secondary students also represented the College with enthusiasm at the ACC Hockey Carnival, an event we were delighted to attend again after several years. In the Primary School, the Year 2 excursion to Scitech and the Year 1 Bush School program provided valuable hands-on learning experiences beyond the classroom.

A special thank you to our Physical Education team for successfully running the Senior School Athletics Carnival in Week 9 after it was postponed due to inclement weather. It was wonderful to see students participating with such enthusiasm, sportsmanship and House spirit. We look forward to hearing which House will take home the honours!

On Thursday, students brightened the campus with a colourful display of beanies, hats and scarves as they raised funds for LifeLink. The event was a fantastic way to conclude the term and demonstrated the generosity and community spirit of our students.

This week, families will receive their child’s Semester 1 report. A great deal of care, time and thought goes into preparing these reports, and I encourage parents and caregivers to take the opportunity to review the feedback provided by teachers. Reports celebrate areas of success while also identifying opportunities for continued growth and improvement. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress, I encourage you to contact their teacher early next term to discuss these further.

Having had the opportunity to review many reports, I have been pleased to see the hard work, commitment and dedication of our students reflected in their achievements. The student attributes section is a particularly important aspect of the report, highlighting the positive learning behaviours and personal qualities our students are developing, skills that will serve them well throughout their education and beyond. Congratulations to all students on your efforts and accomplishments this semester.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff for the outstanding learning opportunities they have provided throughout the semester. Our staff greatly appreciate the support of our families and value the strong partnerships we share in supporting every student’s learning journey.

To our students, thank you for the positive attitude, enthusiasm and commitment you have brought to your learning. Staff have consistently commented on what a wonderful start to the year it has been, and much of this is due to the way our students embrace every opportunity with positivity and determination. We are truly blessed to be part of such a supportive and vibrant community.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing winter break and look forward to welcoming students back for Term 3.

Kind regards

Mrs Marsha Pengilly | Acting Principal

Spirit of Mercy Awards

Today, as we mark the end of Semester 2, we also celebrated the students who received the Spirit of Mercy Award.

At St Brigid’s College, the Spirit of Mercy Award celebrates a student who consistently enriches our school community through their words, actions, and character. This student strives to live out our core Mercy values of Compassion, Justice, Respect, Hospitality, Courage, and Service in all that they do.

The recipient is often someone who works quietly and humbly, yet makes a meaningful difference each day. They embody what it means to be authentically “Mercy,” demonstrating a genuine commitment to creating a fairer and more inclusive world. With resilience and optimism, they approach the challenges of learning with determination, always seeking personal growth and excellence.

This student warmly welcomes others, fostering a strong sense of belonging within our community. In their everyday actions, they walk in the footsteps of our foundress, Catherine McAuley, inspiring others through their kindness, integrity, and service.

Congratulations to all our students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who received their award today.

From the Head of Faith and Mission

What a wonderful, vibrant and joy-filled Term it has been across our College community, with students embracing many opportunities to grow in faith, service and leadership.

In Week 9, our Year 11 students participated in their annual retreat, centred on the theme “Light the Way through Servant Leadership.” The retreat provided a rich opportunity for prayer, reflection, faith formation and connection with peers. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which was both enriching and fun, while encouraging them to recognise their capacity to lead through service. As our future student leaders, the retreat challenged our Year 11s to consider how they can inspire and support others through Mercy values.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2026 Vinnies Winter Sleepout held at the College. Despite a very cold night, students embraced the experience with openness and compassion. Through hearing from guest speakers, engaging in activities and spending a night sleeping rough, students gained a greater understanding of homelessness and the challenges faced by many within our community. We are also delighted to share that students raised more than $2,400 for Vinnies WA, a wonderful achievement that will directly support those experiencing hardship.

Christian Service-Learning continues to flourish across the College, with all secondary year groups having participated in their CSL launches this Term. These experiences reinforce that service can happen both within and beyond the classroom. During the holiday break, students are encouraged to continue seeking opportunities to serve others within their families, parishes and communities.

A wonderful example of this was our Year 11 Caring for Communities class, who recently prepared meals for The Shopfront, providing practical support for those in need. Alongside these service initiatives, our students continue to deepen their faith through prayer and worship. Last week, our Year 4 students led the Primary Mass with reverence and enthusiasm. We thank Miss Tassone and Mr Comito for their support and preparation of this special celebration, and we are grateful to the families who joined us in prayer.

Our College community continues to lead with generous hearts, responding enthusiastically whenever there is an opportunity to support others. This was evident through our recent Scarf and Beanie Day, where PK-12 students, and staff raised funds for LifeLink through gold coin donations, raising over $500 through this initiative, to take the total for the year to over $1200. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause and supported the vital work of LifeLink.

As we reach the end of another successful term, I thank all students, staff and families for their ongoing support, commitment and contribution to the faith life of our College. I wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break.

West Coast Eagles’ Rock My School program

The primary school students enjoyed participating in the West Coast Eagles’ Rock My School program this week. It was a fun and engaging presentation delivered by the West Coast Eagles community staff members with help from club mascot Rick the Rock Eagle!

The presentation highlighted the importance of friendship, perseverance, and resilience, all important values we uphold here at St Brigid’s College.

The year 5 students then participated in a physical workshop with the players from the WC Eagles women’s team. They developed their AFL skills such as hand-balling. A wonderful opportunity for our eager footy players.

From the Heads of Primary

As we reach the end of another busy and rewarding semester, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our students, staff and families for their ongoing support, commitment and partnership throughout Term 2.

Our students should be incredibly proud of their efforts this semester. We have seen them embrace challenges, demonstrate resilience, show kindness to others and strive to do their best in all aspects of school life. Whether in the classroom, on the sporting field, during performances or through service opportunities, our students have represented our college with pride.

We would also like to sincerely thank our staff for their dedication and commitment to ensuring every student continues to learn, grow and progress. Our teachers consistently go above and beyond to provide engaging learning experiences, support individual student needs and create classrooms where students feel safe, valued and encouraged to achieve their personal best. Their passion and professionalism are greatly appreciated.

We finish the term with several wonderful events that have brought our community together. Thank you to our Year 1 students for leading us in a beautiful liturgy and to our Year 4 students for hosting Mass. These occasions provide valuable opportunities for prayer, reflection and faith formation within our college community.

Bush School has continued to be a highlight for our Early Years students, who have embraced the outdoors through sunshine, wind and rain alike. This week also marked the first Bush School experience of the year for our Year 3 students, who thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn, explore and connect with nature in a new environment.

Congratulations to our Year 2 students on their entertaining and informative assembly. They shared their learning about the solar system with confidence and enthusiasm, teaching us all about the planets and the wonders of space.

As the semester ends, we thank our parents and caregivers for the support you provide both at home and within our school community. The partnership between home and school plays a vital role in the success of our students, and we are grateful for your ongoing encouragement and involvement.

On behalf of the Primary staff, I wish all our families a safe, restful and enjoyable three-week holiday break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another exciting semester of learning in Term 3.

Class Focus - Year 1

Year 1 has been buzzing with learning this term! In Health, the children have been exploring how to stay safe in different situations, building confidence and practical know-how along the way. In HASS, they have created a presentation about their place in space.

Our Bush School visit was a wonderful hands-on adventure that helped the children bring their learning about materials to life. They explored how materials can be changed physically without changing what they are made of, using the natural environment as their classroom. The children observed, touched, tested and talked about a range of natural materials, making great connections to their classroom learning. A big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers for helping make the morning such a success.

There were plenty of joyful learning moments along the way! The children loved taking part in risky play, climbing confidently over logs, sailing leaf boats down the stream and splashing through the water in their gum boots. These experiences encouraged curiosity, problem-solving, resilience and a special connection with nature.

In Italian, the children have been learning about Venice and its beautiful waterways. Their Italian scene of Venice is absolutely captivating, and many of the children are now dreaming of one day visiting this magical city themselves.

Class Focus - Year 5

The Year 5 students recently took part in an exciting science incursion focused on space, where they learned about what it is like to be an astronaut and how satellites are used to explore and study our planet and beyond.

The session sparked curiosity and wonder as students explored challenges such as living in space and the important role technology plays in modern space missions.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Parliament House, where students will have the opportunity to see firsthand the concepts they have been learning about being active citizens in a democratic system.

Year 7 to 12 Report Changes

This semester you will notice that the format of our semester report looks a little differently to previous years. The student attributes on which the students have been assessed are aligned to our Vision For Learning. These include the following:

- Responds positively to challenges and opportunities – Application and Engagement

- Takes ownership of learning – self management

- Contributes positively to the learning environment – cooperative behavioiur

- Works collaboratively – teamwork and participation

You will find on the second page of the report a detailed description of these attributes and the elaborations that indicate the scale of achievement in each area. Growth in these areas will lead to success in students classes and improvement in results, and as such, are an important aspect of the report.

The report also details the academic results of your child and includes, where appropriate, the course mark and course average for the cohort, the exam result and the school grade. In year 7-10 there is also a column detailing the WA Grade, which for most courses will be the same as the school grade. Where students WA grade is different, it is due to the allocation of a particular class in Mathematics and or English. Homeroom information has been included that details similar information to previous years.

Finally, the new report will detail achievements of your daughter at the college. If your daughter is a leader, this will be indicated, their involvement in co-curricular activities this semester has been listed, and any awards they might have received. It is hoped that in future years we will be able to have several years’ worth of this data showing on the one report to allow the cumulative achievements to be evident.

It is hoped that this report will be streamlined and easy to read and will provide information that is useful for you to gain a full picture of your child’s achievements for the semester, across all areas of College life. Please take the time to go through this document with your child to celebrate successes and determine areas where your daughter can continue to improve. Should you have any questions regarding your daughter’s progress you are welcome to email teachers to seek feedback or to organize a time to discuss this further.

In reading through the reports for all year groups, it has been pleasing to see the growth in many of our students and the wide range of activities they have participated in this semester. They are to be congratulated on their dedication to their studies and on their involvement in the many aspects of college life. I look forward to seeing how they will continue to grow in Semester 2.

From The Head of Learning - English

Here we are, at the end of a busy and uplifting semester in English, ready to enjoy a fabulous three-week break. Our students have engaged with some incredible material to extend on their communication skills. They have read and interpreted a plethora of books ranging from Dahl to Spiegelman, have watched and analysed some groundbreaking films from the oeuvre of directors such as Taika Waititi and Andrew Adamson, have listened to the musical outpourings of Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran and have produced some spectacular creations including picture books and podcasts.

One of the highlights of the semester has been the 2026 English and Literature Conference held at Curtin University. Our Year Twelve English and Literature ATAR students were given the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Curtin University student with a focus on English and Literature content.

They enjoyed sitting in the well-designed, well equipped lecture theatres with one participant saying she enjoyed, “Getting to semi-experience campus life and the lecturers who were enthusiastic”. Lecture offerings were wide and varied and included such titles as “What is Voice?”, “Exam Techniques for Literature: Section 1” and “Analysing Drama”. Our only regret was that we could not attend them all. Lecturers consisted of both university staff, such as David Buchbinder who specialises in masculinities studies, and experienced English and Literature teachers including Bruce Derby, who once worked at our brother school. In the lunch break, students explored the food trucks and cafes on campus while teachers were treated to a delicious Jamaican feast followed by dessert and coffee. All in all, it was a wonderful experience for both staff and students.

Looking ahead, we have much to enjoy in the coming semester. Building on this semester we will be applying our literary muscles to Mary Shelley, Margaret Atwood, William Shakepeare and S.E. Hinton to name a few. If as Mark Twain asserts, “There is no such thing as the Queen’s [King’s] English. The property has gone into the hands of a joint stock company, and we own the bulk of the shares!”, then students have every right to claim ownership of the language. It is imperative that we as “shareholders”, invest strongly in both the teaching and learning of this wonderful language.

From the Deputy Principal of Pastoral Care

End of Semester Reflection

As we conclude the first semester, it is an opportune time to reflect on the many ways our College community has continued to focus on the needs of our students and provide them with Pastoral Care.

A key focus this semester has been the continued development and enrichment of our Pastoral Care Program (PCP). These dedicated sessions have provided valuable opportunities for students to engage in meaningful learning beyond the classroom, supporting their social, emotional, and personal development.

Throughout the semester, students have benefited from a range of guest speakers who have shared their expertise and experiences on topics relevant to young people today. Our staff, and in particular the Deans have prepared and delivered engaging sessions on topics relevant to their particular year groups. These sessions have sparked thoughtful discussion and encouraged students to consider new perspectives and approaches to their wellbeing and relationships.

In addition, a strong emphasis has been placed on study skills. Students have explored practical strategies to support their organisation, time management, and effective learning habits. These skills are essential as they build resilience and confidence in managing their academic responsibilities, both now and into the future.

This term, we have also begun the implementation of the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum, an important curriculum that equips students with the knowledge and understanding to recognise and respond to unsafe situations. This curriculum promotes a shared responsibility for safety and empowers students to seek help when needed, reinforcing our commitment to creating a safe and supportive school environment.

It has been pleasing to see the level of engagement from students during PCP time, as well as their willingness to participate in discussions and activities that strengthen our community. The relationships built within these sessions continue to play a vital role in supporting each student’s overall wellbeing.

As we move forward into Semester Two, I would like to draw your attention to a change we will be making regarding student uniform, punctuality and confiscated devices. The rules and expectations of the College have not changed, but we are adjusting how we support students in meeting them.

Currently, students who attend school in incorrect uniform are issued with a lunchtime detention. From next term, this approach will shift to provide students with the opportunity to correct their uniform (or behaviour) before a consequence is applied. If the issue persists, a stepped approach will be implemented, with an after-school detention issued on the third occasion. This process will be managed on a term-by-term basis and will also apply to concerns related to punctuality and confiscated devices. I trust that students will continue to meet the College’s expectations and are confident in having a positive second semester.

Wishing all students and families a wonderful and safe 3-week break. I look forward to welcoming all students back to the College in Term 3

From the Dean of Students, Year 10 – A Busy and Important Term 2

Term 2 has been an eventful and productive term for our Year 10 students as they continue to prepare for the important transition into senior school.

A significant milestone this term was the completion of the Year 10 examination period. These examinations provide students, families and teachers with a valuable snapshot of the subjects in which students may experience success should they choose an ATAR pathway in the core learning areas. They also give students an authentic experience of extended testing conditions, helping them understand what examinations may look and feel like in Years 11 and 12. While exams can be challenging, our students approached the experience with maturity and resilience, gaining important insights into their study habits and academic strengths.

Career exploration has also been a major focus this term. Year 10 students attended the Careers Expo, where they immersed themselves in conversations with a wide range of stallholders about future pathways beyond school. Students engaged with representatives from universities, TAFE, the Australian Defence Force, WA Police and numerous industries, gaining valuable information about the many opportunities available to them after graduation.

To support students in making informed subject selections, representatives from each Learning Area have presented information throughout the term about the subjects available in 2027 and the various combinations students can choose. As students begin considering their senior school pathways, they have also been allocated a staff mentor who will meet with them early in Term 3 to discuss their subject choices and future goals. With subject selection just around the corner, there will no doubt be many conversations, reflections and decisions taking place over the holiday break.

Earlier this term, students enjoyed a fantastic social event with our friends from Mazenod College at Rollerrama. With an energetic 80s fluoro theme, the evening provided students with an opportunity to skate, socialise and strengthen friendships in a fun and relaxed environment. Whether they were showing off their skating skills or simply enjoying time with friends, it was wonderful to see students connecting and making the most of the occasion.

We are already looking forward to our next social event with Mazenod College in Term 3. Further information will be provided next term, and we are excited to offer our students another opportunity to build connections and create lasting memories.

As we head into the holiday break, we congratulate our Year 10 students on a successful term and wish them a well-earned rest before an exciting and important Term 3.

Year 7 Herdsman Lake Excursion

On 5 June, our Year 7 Science students enjoyed an exciting and educational excursion to the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre. The day provided students with the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting while exploring one of Perth's most significant urban wetlands.

Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging, hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of ecosystems and biodiversity. During a guided nature walk, students conducted waterbird and animal surveys, observing and identifying the many species that call Herdsman Lake home. They also investigated the biodiversity of the lake by collecting and examining aquatic specimens, using microscopes to observe a variety of invertebrates and learn about their important roles within the ecosystem.

Students toured the Discovery Centre, where they learned about the history, environment, and conservation of Herdsman Lake. They also took part in water sampling activities, using scientific techniques to assess water quality and investigate the health of the wetland ecosystem.

One of the highlights of the day was contributing to a large-scale environmental restoration project. To help increase biodiversity within the area, students planted native trees and vegetation around the wetland. We are incredibly proud to share that St Brigid's College students planted a remarkable 1,500 native plants—the highest number planted by any school involved in the program!

The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their scientific inquiry skills, connect with nature, and contribute positively to the local environment. We would like to thank the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre staff and our dedicated teachers for making this valuable learning experience possible.

Well done to all of our Year 7 students for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and outstanding contribution to the conservation of this important ecosystem.
