Curriculum Corner: Science 🔬
We are off to a great start in the Science department! The sixth graders have been very busy this year asking questions, writing hypotheses, and collecting data. We are about to start looking at our data to find patterns in our measurements. We are excited to see what substance affects the growth of beans the most. In the 7th grade classroom, we tested the surface tension of water and practiced the scientific method by trying to get paperclips to float- the record was 6 floating at the same time! Reading and analyzing informational texts is the focus for the 8th graders.
The physical science classes completed a phase-change lab and will soon be separating mixtures in different ways, such as by size, density, filtration, magnetic properties, and boiling points. Biology classes are gearing up for our Biological Macromolecules and McMush lab where they will learn to identify what type of macromolecules are in common foods. They will learn to test for simple sugars, starches, proteins, and fats in food. Then they will make predictions and test a McDonald's cheeseburger, small fries and Sprite for the biological macromolecules and write a lab report. This lab is as gross as it is informative!
Last week in Chemistry, we worked on calculating the atomic mass of beanium to show how isotopes factor into the average atomic masses of atoms. This week, we will be doing a Flame test lab to identify unknown metals using the color of flames. The Anatomy class dissected gummy bears and bananas to practice becoming familiar with anatomical terms. Physics classes are working on a lab that asks students to write a procedure to determine the acceleration on a ramp, attempting to calculate it without the use of motion sensors. We think you’ll agree that science is a ton of fun!
