Mrs. Jill Bickel, parent of 2nd grader Lucy and future Wildcat, Chandler

The Walteria Volunteer of the Week is Mrs. Jill Bickel, the Third Vice President of Walteria's PTA. Among Mrs. Bickel's many contributions to the Walteria Community she is currently the Chair of the Scholastic Book Fair and leading hospitality efforts as a member of the PTA. Mrs. Bickel has structured a thriving Book Fair including building a strong community of volunteers to staff and support this bi-yearly event. In addition, her contributions in the area of hospitality have supported efforts to regularly ensure that our teachers, staff, and special event volunteers feel appreciated through providing meals, snacks, and various displays of appreciation. The Walteria Community is made better for all of her many contributions. Her efforts truly make a big difference in the lives of our students. Here are a few words about why Mrs. Bickel volunteers:

1. Why did you decide to volunteer at Walteria?

I wanted to get to know my daughter's teachers and the other parents at Walteria. I signed up to be an Adventures in Art docent and found myself loving the projects and making new friends. When asked to be Book Fair Chair, I was nervous but excited to take on a much loved event.

2. What do you love about volunteering?

I love seeing the students excited for the Book Fair and how eager they are to find a new book for themselves or for their teacher. I also love getting to know the teachers and staff, and all the amazing volunteers I've met in the last two years. It's so much fun to be a part of the behind the scenes for all the events we do for the students.

3. What is one fun or memorable moment about your volunteer time?
Hearing a student say "Hi, Mrs. Bickel!" and wave to me, for the first time as I walked through campus. I was honored that a student took the time to say hi to me.

4. What advice would you give to people considering volunteering at Walteria?
Start with something you enjoy, maybe it's helping in the classroom or being a music docent. Always remember to have fun! The students are excited to see parents on campus.
