Principal's Corner Principal's Corner

We survived all of the anticipation leading up to Halloween!

It is no small feat. The parade was fun and the weather was perfect. I always enjoy seeing all of the families here to watch the children.

School photos arrived and are in backpacks. Our photo make up day is November 16.

Our conference day is Tuesday, November 3. If you have not signed up yet, please reach out to your classroom teacher. It is also voting day. I urge people to read and feel confident in your decision and then go VOTE!

We are extending our food drive through this week so that families can still send in food at the conference time. A giant thank you to the families that have given so generously.

On Tuesday this week, Jeannie Connolly came to school to make nature journals with everyone. These journals will be used at all of the OLL days for the remainder of the year. Journal writing in the woods is one of my favorite parts of OLL.

Speaking of OLL, our next date is set for November 18. If you would like to help out please email or call the school and let us know! Kara from the Harris Center will be joining us.

On Monday, November 9 from 6:30-7:30 I will hold my next Together at the Table. My topic this month is all about math. I will share with parents why we do what we do, what has changed, and support for home. If you would like to bring your children, please RSVP so that we have enough prepared for them. The children will be able to play some math games and there will be a game for each child to take home. We will not have grown ups here that can watch younger children, so please be prepared to have little ones sitting with you.

Last, but not least, I am still hoping to receive the names of any Veterans in your family. If you are able to share their mailing address with us, we will put our letters in the mail. If not, we are happy to send them home to you for personal delivery. You can simply email me at lmann@conval.edu with the name and address.

Happy Halloween!

Kindergarten Happenings! Kindergarten Happenings!

Here is the Kindergarten snapshot for the week! :)

This week in Reading skills students were introduced to the tricky words: one, two, three. Students also spent a few days reviewing our letters: m, a, t, d, o, c, g and i. Students practiced their sounding out CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with letter banks, puzzles, and pictures. This could be something great and fun to practice at home as well! In Reading knowledge we continued reading folktale stories and practiced retelling by sequencing the story pictures in the right order.

In Math students focused on number towers, one more & one less, and comparing numbers and pictures. These were all great practices around the skills of more than, fewer than and same. In Social Studies we focused on more community helpers: construction workers, mail carriers, bakers and chefs. Students have learned about so many community helpers and why their jobs are important. This week we got to have our bi-weekly lesson with the guidance counselor. We continue to learn about our feelings and how to process them.

We ended the week with everything about Halloween. Friday fun started with carving pumpkins, then learning about the life cycle of pumpkins in class. We got to enjoy Scholastic news and learned about bats and pumpkins. We even got to enjoy some Halloween bingo with beginning sounds and building pumpkin towers too!

1st & 2nd Grade News! 1st & 2nd Grade News!

First and second grade had a spooktacular final week of October. It was a fun and busy week filled with so many exciting activities. In science, we continued observing our pumpkin Lil' Jimmy. Students are eagerly waiting for him to begin to rot and change. They are so smart, and know that this is the first step in him growing into a new pumpkin. We also began to discuss animal adaptations in nature. We studied about a real bat hospital and how bats' unique needs make caring for them different from other rescue animals. We also did a lesson on vertebrates and invertebrates. This helped us see how differences in individual animals help them survive. Today we did the MATH, we did the MONSTER MATH! We reviewed math facts with some fun monster games. We ended our week with our costume parade as a whole school! Happy Halloween!!

3rd & 4th Grade Bulletin! 3rd & 4th Grade Bulletin!

Third and Fourth grade students have spent some time this week talking about kindness. Next up will be how to apologize, even when it was an accident (not easy!)

Comparing fractions has been the fourth grade topic in math. We are working with numberlines, fraction tiles, and drawing rectangles to find equal parts. This is the first encounter with comparing fractions with different denominators. We continue to practice our multiplication facts as well. Third grade is working on multiplication with many different images. They see arrays and sets, and use graph paper and connecting cubes.

In literacy we continue to remember the parts of speech. Sometimes we have aha moments and other times we wonder if maybe they haven’t been exposed to some things yet. We have expanded our journal writing from “how many words” to how many sentences.” This part is moving us into paragraph work. Reading includes making book choices where we can read the words on the page, and not just look at pictures.

We continue our science work with Biomes. Our first Biome is the Forest. We have Kara from the Harris Center joining us this week and we will be looking at birds specifically. We have learned about deciduous trees and conifers.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween!
