Note from Mr. Simpson
The best week ever!
What a great community week here at Newark! On Wednesday we ventured onto the south Mount Pisgah trail as a school. Students were phenomenal, many hit the summit, but what impressed me was the communication and encouragement to one another.
Today we came together as a community and talked about the behaviors that support our value of Ready to Learn. We used the hike as a metaphor for being Ready to Learn. We talked about how on the flat trails we could go fast and move quickly.
Then the trail got steep, rocky, tree roots sticking out that we needed to navigate. We slowed down, we were careful, we supported each other. Some would say almost cautious at times.
When we made it to the overlook, we stopped, we observed, we admired, we didn't look back. We kept going. "Why?" I asked the students. "Because we wanted to summit!" was the most common answer. We talked about reaching the peak, and while that is nice, it's the effort, the attitude, and the growth that matters!
Many made it to the summit. Some did not. Both are okay, because no one gave up. We kept moving forward, we kept climbing.
So how does it all tie together?
Well, Being READY TO LEARN every single day is a lot like the hike up Mt. Pisgah. Some days school is a flat trail, easy. Some days, it's steep and stony, hard. On hard days, READY TO LEARN doesn't mean go faster. It means slow down, be careful, but keep going anyway. Take healthy risks. That hill taught us something about the year. Some days flat, some days steep, some days we stop to catch our breath and admire what we've accomplished. Ultimately, be careful, keep going!
