PE, Health & Wellness

Physical Education Update
The first semester came to a quick end, but we have been excited to welcome a crew of new faces into the gymnasium and on Zoom for the spring semester of physical education and wellness! The first semester students wrapped up with some yoga and will get to preview some of the black history lessons in the final week of PE; that will be taught in greater depth in semester two.
As we welcome a new group of students to the gymnasium, we will review safety protocols and course expectations for the spring. The spring semester students will have similar opportunities with hybrid learning as students engage in SworkIt routines to incorporate movement into the day. We are definitely looking forward to warmer weather with the second semester, which will allow our students the opportunity to get down to Victory Field for PE.
Health Update
With Semester 1 coming to a close, we are excited to be welcoming a new group of students to Health class. The first semester wrapped up with discussions around substance abuse and nutrition, with students having the opportunity to engage in a project-based assignment on either of those topics to take the place of a traditional final exam. This project-based assignment provided students with the opportunity to boost their academic standing for their overall grade.
To start Semester 2, students will be receiving invitations to join a Google Classroom page where there will be a class Zoom link for students to join class remotely, along with other important documents. Students enrolled in Health class for Semester 2 will engage in the same topics and activities as the students in Semester 1, with the possibility of some slight variations. All assignments and announcements will be posted on the class Google Classroom throughout the semester, so it will be important for students to check their Google Classroom pages frequently.
Black History Month in Wellness Classes
Both physical education and health classes have begun to explore Black History as it relates to sports, fitness & overall well-being. Physical education classes will have the opportunity to view The Journey of the African-American Athlete, a film that explores the adversity many Blacks faced and how sports grew to include Black people. Students will be provided the opportunity to reflect on the film with others in their class. Additionally, students in the second semester PE will get to hear words from Doc Rivers, Dawn Staley, Willie O’Ree, and others on the hardships Black people faced as they tried to make a career out of being an athlete.
In health classes, students have been and will continue to recognize the accomplishments of many African American individuals in the areas of Health and Wellness. To this point, students have learned about our country’s former Surgeon General (Jerome Adams), as well as the “Let’s Move” initiative set forth by former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Students will soon be researching an individual of their choosing, and sharing out that person’s accomplishments positive impacts in the area of Health and Wellness.
School Wellness Advisory Committee Updates
Hi Watertown Community,
The School Wellness Advisory Committee met twice in February to discuss the goals for the committee, focusing on promoting the school wellness policy and supporting health and wellness for all of our students, staff, and families in the community. Please see our Wellness policy in the link here and you can also find it located on our district’s website in the ‘About the District’ section and then under the ‘School Nutrition’ tab. The Wellness Policy is important because it includes goals around nutrition promotion, physical education and physical activity, health, and wellness, and other school-based and community activities.
