🏀Senators versus Cardinals

Portsmouth West High School hosted a wonderfully fun and competitive basketball game on March 25, 2025. Our West Senators students took on the Vern Riffe Cardinals. A school wide event, this game encompassed the true nature of Senator Pride with students, faculty, and all in attendance cheering on both teams. To the delight of everyone, the game ended in a tie of 29-29, which means this tradition will have to continue on next year to see if one, or all, come out the victor.

👶🏼Students in Lifespan Development Study Developmental Milestones

Mrs. Blanton's SCCTC Lifespan Development class had a little visitor last week. The class had just completed their toddler and preschooler development unit, and Miss Coraline graciously donated her time to help the students apply some of the knowledge they had gained. Students interacted with Cora and discussed her fine and gross motor skills and developmental milestones according to Freud and Piaget. It is safe to say fun was had by all!

Focus 3

Win the Moment

Success Happens One Moment at a Time

Life is full of events—some good, some bad, and many unexpected. You can’t control everything that happens, but you always control how you respond.

Your response determines your results—so how you respond matters more than the event itself. That’s the power of E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome).

"Success is not determined by the events you experience.
Success is determined by how you choose to respond."

Own Your Response

You don’t control your E (events), and you don’t control your O (outcomes). But you do control your R (your response).

When you don’t get the outcome you want, don’t blame the event—change the response.

How to Apply E+R=O

Press Pause – Think before reacting.
Get Your Mind Right – Control your focus and self-talk.
Step Up – Choose the best possible response.
Adjust & Adapt – Stay flexible and make adjustments as needed.

Key Takeaway

Mastering E+R=O means taking responsibility for your response and using it to create better results. The events in life will happen—what matters is how you choose to respond.

Team Talks

The Power of Pressing Pause.

Better Responses, Better Results.

Watch this week's team talk here.

Challenges are inevitable—the best teams and individuals know this. The difference? They don’t get caught off guard—they prepare.

High performers don’t wait until the moment arrives to figure out what to do. They proactively anticipate what’s coming, clarify their goals, and prepare so they’re ready to execute with discipline.

A Proactive Pause is a deliberate moment to stop, think, and prepare before taking action. It helps you focus on what matters, block out distractions, and respond with discipline instead of default—so you’re ready to execute when it counts.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

-– Abraham Lincoln

How to Prepare for Predictable Events

Three questions to prepare for predictable events:

  • Anticipate – What’s coming? Identify predictable challenges.
  • Clarify – What outcome do I want? Define your goal before the event.
  • Prepare – How will I respond? Plan a disciplined response in advanced.

Unexpected challenges will happen. When they do, take a Proactive Pause—step back, refocus, and take disciplined action instead of reacting with frustration.

Before a tough conversation, take a Proactive Pause to anticipate the situation, clarify your goal, and prepare a disciplined response.

Key Takeaway

Most people operate on default, reacting to situations instead of preparing for them. High-performing teams and individuals don’t wait for challenges—they anticipate, prepare, and execute.
