From Dr. Martin.... From Dr. Martin....

Dear LISD Families,

This spring, we are implementing student-led conferences. Some teachers have implemented some version of this practice in the past, and Becca Hamilton facilitated student-led conferences (SLCs) in the fall of this school year. Our plans are to implement SLCs with continuity from kindergarten to 8th grade this spring, and to begin adding high school grades next year. We will still offer high school conferences this spring with the same structure you are used to (15 minutes with separate teachers). Our team has been busy working out the logistical details and creating resources to support students in preparing their presentations. Please plan on attending your child's conference.

  • Elementary conferences will be March 30-April 2.
  • Secondary conferences will be April 1-2.
  • Evening conference slots of will available on Thursday, April 2. Stay tuned for more details but save the dates!
  • Childcare and Spanish/English interpretation services will be offered.

Have a great week!

All my best,

Martha

Andris Meisner

What is one of your favorite memories from school?
When we won districts last year in soccer. That or when we got the school record for the 4x4 relay at state track last year. Competing along with my best friends is just really cool.

What are your plans after high school, and what are you most excited about?
Right now I’m hoping to do a gap year program playing soccer in Valencia, Spain. I have an interview for it on Friday. After that, I hope to go to a four-year university. UW is where my sister went and that’s my plan too.

What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years?
I’ll have graduated from a good school, doing something I love in a place that I love. I am thinking about a career in sports medicine, physical therapy, or maybe business.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?
I would say, “Do everything you can. Join clubs, play sports, try everything. You won’t get this opportunity again.”

What is the most meaningful assignment or project given to you by a teacher?
In 10th grade, Mr. Carter had us do Romeo and Juliet scenes. My group did a Minecraft video. We got to build the scene and act it out, and it was one of the most interactive assignments I’ve had.

What is a favorite book, movie, song, or show that tells us something about you?
The Movie “Surf’s Up.” The main character chases his dream of surfing even though others don’t think he should do it. It was my favorite movie growing up. It’s about perseverance and doing what you love no matter what.

Who or what inspires you?
My parents. They are super hard working and they’ve taught me and my siblings to treat people with kindness and to go out in the world and do our best.

When you’re not in school or working, how do you like to spend your free time?
Being active. I play club soccer which keeps me really busy on weekends. I also love just being outdoors…..hiking or walking.

In what ways do you feel you have had an impact on your community?
I coached elementary soccer the last couple years. At school, I’ve had an impact through sports, impacting peers in a leadership role. Sports are a highlight at school and lots of people are paying attention to that.

In what ways do you want to have a positive impact on the world in the future?
In whatever I do, I want to bring kindness to that field or career. I want to spread positivity.

What else do you think people should know about you?
I really love hockey. I played before moving to Lopez, and I’ve been to a bunch of Kraken games in Seattle.

Oliver Rick

What is one of your favorite memories from school? My favorite memory was probably beating Friday Harbor 7-1 in soccer last year. They were a fierce rival and they came expecting to beat us, but we turned it into one of our best games of the year.

What are your plans after high school, and what are you most excited about? Currently, I think I’m going to take a gap year to travel, and then see where that lands me. I might go back to New Zealand for a bit or travel in Europe.

What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years?
I hope to be living in a cool place with lots of outdoor access. I’d like to be in a career I enjoy that allows me to take time off to do the things I love.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?
I would tell myself to set up good habits and stay on top of things. If you set those as a freshman, it’s easier to keep them throughout high school.

What is the most meaningful assignment or project given to you by a teacher?
In my Running Start nutrition class, I had an assignment about tracking my diet. It made me look at nutrition and how I eat in a completely different way, and changed the way I eat and plan my meals now.

What is a favorite book, movie, song, or show that tells us something about you?
The Hobbit and this message…..”Don’t be afraid to leave the shire and go on adventures because you never know where they will take you.”

Who or what inspires you?
I would say my parents inspire me most. They work really hard and they approach life in a good way with a balance of fun, family, and everything else. They inspire me to do my best.

When you’re not in school or working, how do you like to spend your free time?
Mainly soccer, but also anything outdoors…..biking, skiing, climbing, hiking.

In what ways do you feel you have had an impact on your community?
The last two years in soccer, with back to back state runs, I feel I’ve had a real impact on our team. Some community members have said that they’ve been inspired with how our team has come together. I’ve also helped out by coaching elementary soccer.

In what ways do you want to have a positive impact on the world in the future?
I want to inspire people to be their best, whether that means athletics or leading with kindness.
