MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

CHS COMMUNITY,

I hope you are having a wonderful and restful summer! While the hallways have been quiet without our students, Chardon High School has been a hive of activity over the past few months as we prepare for the upcoming school year.

The most exciting change you'll notice this fall is our completely remodeled cafeteria. It is truly a transformed space, and I know our students are going to love the new atmosphere when they return.

I also want to recognize our incredible custodial staff for their hard work over the summer. Battling several weeks of intense heat, they worked tirelessly to ensure our facilities are clean, safe, and ready. Thanks to their efforts, the building looks absolutely fantastic.

August 19th will be here sooner than you think, and we cannot wait to welcome our Hilltoppers back! Please review the updates below for important information as we prepare for the start of the school year.

ATTENDANCE CALLS

School districts are required to notify parents or guardians within 120 minutes of the start of the school day if a student is absent without a known excuse.

Starting this school year, our student information system, Infinite Campus, will automatically place automated telephone calls for any unaccounted-for student absences.

Key Details & Daily Timeline

  • School Start Time: 7:45 AM

  • Automated Robocalls: Infinite Campus will issue automated calls at approximately 9:30 AM to notify you if your student is not present in school.

  • Absence Classification: If the school has not received prior notification regarding your child’s absence, your student will be marked UNEXCUSED until proper documentation or notification is provided.

Action Required from Parents & Guardians

1. Call the Attendance Line Promptly

To avoid receiving an automated call and to ensure your child's absence is accurately coded, please contact the CHS Attendance Line at (440) 285-4052 prior to the start of the school day to provide a legitimate reason for their absence or tardiness.

2. Complete Your Infinite Campus Annual Update

Because these system-generated calls are automated, it is critical that our records contain your most up-to-date phone numbers.

  • Log into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

  • Complete the Annual Update task to review and confirm your contact preferences.

Important Note on Contacts: Automated absence notification calls will only be made to Primary Contact #1 listed in your Infinite Campus profile. Please ensure Primary Contact #1 is set to the individual best reached during morning hours.

COMMENCEMENT 2027

Please note that the official Commencement date for the Class of 2027 will be announced in mid-September. This is the earliest timeframe available to confirm and book our venue reservation with Parkside Church. We appreciate your patience and will share the confirmed date as soon as it is finalized!

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - AUGUST 19

As with the first few weeks of every school year, learning new systems and schedules takes time and patience. Our top priority is safety. To help with the transition, students will not be marked tardy the first week of school.

All drivers on campus should practice extreme caution when entering the front drive or the student parking lot. We anticipate the new changes will have a positive impact on morning traffic patterns if the procedures are followed.

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH

On Friday, August 14th, the CHS Student Council will host a Back to School Bash for all incoming 8th graders at CHS from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. This is a great opportunity for students to get familiar with the building, meet their classmates, and get excited for the new school year.

PARKING PASSES

Please click the button below for detailed information if you are needing to purchase a parking pass for student drivers. Passes for the upcoming school year will go on sale starting Monday, August 10th. Sales will be staggered by grade level, similar to last year's process. The parking pass application is linked below.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Monday, August 10th: Senior Mentors/Seniors

  • Tuesday, August 11th: Juniors

  • Wednesday, August 10th: Sophomores

CELL PHONES 2026-27 CELL PHONES 2026-27

Ohio Revised Code requires that all public school districts adopt policies prohibiting student cell phone use during the instructional day, with limited exceptions. The law is intended to reduce distractions, increase student engagement, and support a safe and focused learning environment. No changes have been made to policies and the general rule is, "out of sight and powered off." This includes wireless/wired earbuds.

Exceptions will be permitted only for:
  • Approved educational use authorized by a teacher or administrator.
  • Needs outlined in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.
  • Documented medical needs requiring device use (with physician documentation).
  • Emergency situations, as outlined in the school’s emergency management plan.

PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK 2026-27 PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK 2026-27

Linked below is the Board of Education approved 2026–27 Parent/Student Handbook.

Key District & Building Expectations:

  • Promoting a Safe Learning Environment: The handbook details district policies established to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive educational environment for all students and staff.

  • Rights and Responsibilities: It outlines essential student rights, behavioral expectations, and academic responsibilities across all grade levels.

  • Conduct and Guidelines: Important procedures regarding attendance, code of conduct, technology use, and student safety are clearly defined to ensure clarity between school and home.

  • Building-Specific Addendums: In addition to district-wide policies, building-specific addendums are linked at the end of the handbook (Section VI). These addendums detail building-level expectations, daily routines, procedures, and resources specific to each school

Families are encouraged to review and discuss these guidelines together to help prepare for a successful school year.

This document will always be available in your student(s) grade-level Google Classroom throughout the year for quick reference.

SCHEDULES

Student schedules will be available in Infinite Campus starting at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 12th. Links for Campus Student and Campus Parent can be found HERE. If you have trouble accessing Infinite Campus or have general questions, please contact any of our building secretaries for assistance.

  • All students (grades 8–12) should check Infinite Campus before the first day to know where to report for first period.

Students enrolled in an upper level science course will see their class listed as two periods. This is intentional and NOT in error.

We understand that you may have preferences, but changes will only be considered if a verifiable mistake was made in your course assignments. Otherwise, students are expected to follow their assigned schedule as posted. This policy ensures a smooth start to the school year and optimal class sizes.

If your student has a scheduling concern (such as a missing class, a course that needs to be added, or a verifiable error in their schedule), counselors will be available in person from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the following days:

  • Thursday, August 13th

  • Friday, August 14th

Chardon High School (grades 8-12) traditionally does not issue school supply lists before the start of the school year. Some 8-12 classes will not have a specific list of required items. For those classes that do, students will receive teacher-specific supply lists during class time during the first week of school. All CHS students are asked to come prepared for the first day of school with basic items e.g. writing utensils, notebooks, etc.

AM STUDENT ARRIVAL PROCEDURES AM STUDENT ARRIVAL PROCEDURES

The doors to Chardon High School will open at 7:20 AM this year. The first bell will ring at 7:40 AM, signaling students to proceed from the gym and cafeteria to their first-period class. Breakfast will be served starting at 7:20 AM, with the cafeteria reserved for students eating breakfast before class.

Bus Riders

  • Bus riders will be released from the ALCAN parkway collectively at 7:25 AM.

  • This new timing is implemented to help lessen traffic congestion on Chardon Avenue and Canfield.

Car Riders

  • Car rider drop-off procedures remain the same as last year.

  • It's recommended that you drop off your child after 7:30 AM. This allows sufficient time for bus riders to walk from the ALCAN parkway to the high school building, minimizing congestion.

Student Drivers

  • Student drivers who do not eat breakfast at school should plan to leave their cars in the student lot around 7:35 AM.

  • This timing provides students with 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to their first-period class.

General Entry/Exit

  • All student traffic, including bus riders, car riders, and student drivers, will enter and exit Chardon High School through the vestibule doors, consistent with last year's procedures.

This tiered system of student arrival helped alleviate traffic congestion on Canfield and Chardon Avenue last year. We need everyone to be SAFE and patient during the first two weeks of school.
