National Boarding Week

Dear Families, students and staff,

This week, our College celebrated National Boarders Week. This year’s theme, “Echoes of Home,” honours the culture, traditions, memories, and community that shape our boarders every day and in every way.

In Boarding, home does not disappear — it evolves. It echoes through the foods our students miss, the languages they speak after lights out, the music they play, the stories they share, and the rituals they hold close.

St Brigid’s College is home to 75 Boarders from locations across Western Australia. Our Boarding community is at the heart of the College and has been an integral part of our identity since our establishment in 1929.

Our Boarders are actively involved in the Lesmurdie community and surrounding areas, participating in sport and recreational activities alongside local students. On weekends, Boarders take part in organised recreational programs or may visit friends or family in Perth with the approval of their parents or guardians.

The College has three boarding houses that cater for students from Years 7 to 12. A dedicated team of House Supervisors, led by our Head of Boarding, Ms Sam Jenner, provides care and support to ensure the wellbeing of every student.

College Nurse

Nurse Jess Coolican plays an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our College community. Yesterday, she assisted staff by providing access to the flu vaccine during their normal working day. She also supports our visiting GP in the Boarding House every Tuesday.

Nurse Jess begins and ends each day with students in our Boarding community. If you would like to seek guidance or support regarding your child’s medical needs, please contact her at nurse@stbrigids.wa.edu.au

Please be reminded not to send your child to the College if they are unwell.

Kind regards

Mrs Veronica Parker | Principal

From the Head of Faith and Mission

A continued highlight among the many moments that have marked a great start to Term 2 in Faith and Mission has been the St Brigid’s Rosary Month, with students and staff coming together in prayer and reflection. May, dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, has provided a special opportunity for each cohort to pray a decade of the Rosary, with Year 1-6s participating reverently via an online Teams gathering last week and Years 8-10s also praying a decade each. The Year 7s will soon complete the final Rosary gathering, bringing this inaugural celebration to a meaningful close.

This spirit of shared faith continues to flourish through active participation in College initiatives, with preparations well underway for the Young Mercies for Vinnies Winter Sleepout, to be held on Thursday June 18th, together with Mazenod College. The recent introduction of lunchtime grace over the PA, led by students from both Primary and Secondary, on Wednesdays and Fridays has further strengthened our sense of community, offering a regular and uplifting moment for the whole College to pause, pray, and give thanks together.

The Year 9 students participated in their year group retreat earlier this week. The retreat was a magnificent and enriching day centred on the theme of Ursula Frayne, whose pioneering spirit continues to inspire our community. Arriving in Perth along the Swan River in 1846, Ursula Frayne and the Sisters of Mercy established the first Catholic school in Western Australia, laying the foundations for what would become Mercedes College. The day began with an introduction session led by Mrs Parker before students departed from the College and journeyed to Elizabeth Quay, walking in the footsteps of Ursula Frayne to Mercedes College. Students enjoyed spending time together at Mercedes College before attending midday Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. The retreat concluded with a tour of the Mercy Convent, the Chapel, and the Pioneer Sisters of Mercy graves at Mercedes College, offering students a powerful connection to the history and legacy of faith, service, and education.

As always, families and friends of the College are warmly invited to share in the liturgical life of our community. Please see below for upcoming celebrations and opportunities to participate.

UPCOMING LITURGIES AND CELEBRATIONS

  • Weekly Morning Mass- Thursdays at 8am- College Heritage Chapel
  • Wednesday 20 May- Year 2 Liturgy at 9am- College Heritage Chapel
  • Friday 22 May- Primary School Mass, led by Year 3s at 9am- Our Lady of Lourdes church

Secondary Sports Update

Term 2 has been a fast start to sport in the Secondary College with ACC Netball, Senior Australian Rules Football, Year 7 Lightning carnival and SSWA Netball all taking place within the first 4 weeks.

The ACC Netball side has played 4 games this term with 3 strong wins over Guildford, Emmanuel and St Norberts. The sides first loss came this week with a loss to a strong Living Waters Lutheran College. Our sits 3 wins and 1 loss in second place with the top two sides in the group progressing through to the knockout matches later in Term 2.

The Senior School Australian Rules football side has played two matches so far and has come up against two very strong opponents in Darling Range and Leeming SHS. Whilst results have not been in our favour the team is having a lot of fun and improving each match. The sides next match is at Mazenod College against Clontarf with the girls sniffing their first win of the season.

The Year 7 Lightning carnival is always a highlight on the Year 7 calendar with the entire cohort heading out to participate in a selected sport for the day. This year we had 6 netball, 2 soccer and 1 AFL teams represent the College. The Year 7’s were also joined on the day by the Year 11 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation students who were the coaches for the day. There was plenty of sun, fun and spirit on the day. It was great to see the Year 11 students really embrace the coaching roles and enhancing the experience for the year 7 students.

Another Major event on the sporting Calendar was the SSWA Netball carnival that was held on Wednesday May 13. We had 7 teams (73 students) compete at the carnival this week. This does not include the Year 9 (another 35) students who will be attending their SSWA netball carnival on May 28. Each team finished the day on the positive side of the win loss ledger with the Year 7/8 A, Year 10 A, Year 11 A and Year 12 A all finishing with 4 wins and 1 loss for the day, keeping their chances of progressing through to the elimination rounds alive. The Year 7/8 B and C, alongside the Year 10 B teams each finished with a 3 wins/2losses record; more than holding their own against other schools’ top netball teams.

A big thank you must go out to the staff who have assisted in organising, coaching and supporting our teams throughout the beginning of Term 2. A special thank you, goes out to our teachers, Verity Clark (also previously known as Lapierre) and Jo Cunnigham who have spent the last 4 weeks transporting and selecting netballs teams for the respective carnivals.

We still have a filled calendar for the rest of the term with more Senior football games, ACC netball games to occur, alongside another SSWA Netball carnival for the year 9’s. We also have ACC Cross-Country training occurring twice a week in the lead up to the Inter-School Carnival in week 6 (May 28), as well as the Inter-House Athletics carnival in Week 8, which students are currently preparing for in PE lessons across all years.

Primary Sport Report

This term in Sport, primary students are focusing on invasion games, including basketball, football, netball, soccer, and floorball. Invasion games provide valuable learning opportunities, as they develop a combination of physical, cognitive, and social skills within a dynamic and engaging environment.

Year 3 students have been working alongside players from the Swan Districts Football Club, demonstrating great effort as they develop their kicking, handballing, and gameplay skills. Recently, Year 2 students enjoyed a visit from Cameron Huefner (#25) of the Perth Wildcats, where they practised essential basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and effective movement on the court.

Later this term, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to work with special guests from the West Coast Eagles, who will be joining them for a football session.

From the Heads of Primary

What a wonderful few weeks it has been in Primary!

Our students have continued to represent the College with pride, enthusiasm and kindness across a range of events and experiences.

Our interschool swimming team recently competed at the CPSSA Carnival and achieved some fantastic results. We extend our sincere thanks to Mrs Bianca Openshaw for her dedication, organisation and encouragement in preparing students for the carnival. Her commitment to supporting students both in and out of the pool helped create a positive and rewarding experience for all involved.

We also congratulate our Primary Choir on their outstanding achievement at the Fremantle Eisteddfod, where they were awarded second place. A special thank you to Mrs Catherine Wade for the time, passion and care she invests into the choir program each week. Her guidance and encouragement enabled students to perform with confidence and joy, and the result was a wonderful reflection of their hard work and teamwork.

At both events, staff were approached by members of other school communities who commented on the excellent manners, sportsmanship and respectful way our students interacted with one another. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represent our College and live out our Mercy values in the wider community.

Last week, we were excited to host our first Bush School Experience Morning. It was wonderful to welcome families and young children onto our beautiful College grounds to explore and experience learning in nature. Children had the opportunity to engage with the environment, discover the beauty of our gardens and enjoy the simple joy of outdoor exploration. Spending time in nature from a young age supports curiosity, creativity, resilience and wellbeing, and it was lovely for families to experience a small glimpse of the meaningful learning opportunities our students enjoy through Bush School. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Christine Williams, Mrs Rebecca Bowen and Miss Belinda Beatty and for their vision, preparation and enthusiasm in bringing this experience to life. Their passion for nature-based learning created a warm and engaging environment for families and showcased the many benefits of learning outdoors.

Last Friday, many of our families joined us for our Mother’s Day Liturgy and breakfast. It was a special opportunity to pause and celebrate the mothers, grandmothers and significant women in our lives who support, nurture and guide our children each day.

This week also brought one of the most anticipated events on the Primary calendar, the Year 6 Camp. Camp is something our students look forward to throughout their primary years, and this year’s group were a true credit to the College. Students challenged themselves to step outside their comfort zones, try new experiences and build connections beyond their usual friendship groups. A sincere thank you to Mr Gallanagh, Miss Cullen, Mr Hillgrove, Mrs Hayley Zuin and Mrs Rebecca Hannan for the tremendous organisation, care and support that made camp such a memorable experience for our students. Their willingness to give their time, energy and

encouragement ensured students felt supported to challenge themselves, build independence and create lasting memories with their peers.

What a fantastic couple of weeks it has been in Primary!

Class Focus - Year 4

After the holiday break, the Year 4 students have returned to school with a positive and enthusiastic mindset for Term 2, 2026. They have quickly re-established routines and are showing growing confidence and independence as they dive into their learning.

In Literacy, students are continuing with the Talk for Writing program, focusing on creating their own narratives using the model text The Creek. They are developing their ability to describe rich and detailed settings, using vivid language to bring their writing to life. Spellex lessons continue to support students in building their understanding of spelling rules and patterns, while also helping to improve their reading fluency and confidence. In Mathematics, students have been exploring common and equivalent fractions, using hands-on strategies and visual models to represent, compare, and calculate fractions.

In HASS, students are learning about the First Fleet, including the reasons behind the journey, such as the Industrial Revolution and conditions in Britain at the time, linking to their learning about Captain Cook in Term 1. In Religion, students are preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Communion, building a deeper understanding of the Eucharist through its connection to the Passover, the Last Supper, and its importance in the Mass. This is particularly exciting as students will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion later in the term. In Science, students are exploring forces, including push and pull, as well as balanced and unbalanced forces, with a highlight being a tug of war activity that brought these concepts to life. In Design and Technologies, students will apply this learning by designing and creating their own rubber band-powered vehicles, combining creativity, problem-solving, and scientific knowledge.

The Year 4 students have had a fantastic start to Term 2, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth throughout the term.

Class Focus - Pre Kindergarten

This term, we have warmly welcomed many new families into our Pre-Kindy community as the children begin their school journey. Throughout the term, the children have been building confidence in their classroom routines, developing independence, and forming positive relationships with their peers and teachers.

This week we had our very first Pre Kindy bush School adventure! The children explored nature through a range of hands on activities, including creating their initial letter with nature, decorating dough with treasures collected on our nature walk, completing leaf rubbings and creating beautiful nature inspired wands. It was wonderful to see the children investigating collecting creating and sharing their discoveries while building confidence, curiosity, and a connection with the outdoors.

Another special learning experience this term was our Mother’s Day pamper afternoon, where the children welcomed their mums and special family members into the classroom. This provided the children with opportunities to build communication skills, confidence, and connections between home and school while sharing special experiences together.

A massive thank you to our Pre Kindy parents and families for all of their support. We are very proud of the children and the positive start they have made to Term Two in Pre-Kindy.

From the Dean of Students - Year 7

Lately, there has been a great deal happening in the world of Year 7. Students have been fortunate to participate in several engaging and educational experiences connected to sustainability and community learning.

We welcomed representatives from Water Corporation, who spoke with students about water use in the Perth Hills and the importance of sustainable practices. In addition, the Friends of the Upper Lesmurdie Falls visited the College to share their knowledge of local flora, including identifying weeds, understanding edible plants, and exploring the connection between the College and the Lesmurdie Falls area.

These experiences will contribute to a sustainability project that Year 7 students will undertake at the end of the term.

There has also been plenty happening in the sporting arena, with students participating in the ACC Lightning Carnival and the SSWA Netball Competition. By all accounts, both events were highly successful, with students demonstrating outstanding teamwork, school spirit, and a strong sense of community as they supported one another across all sports.

We also enjoyed our first retreat as a Year 7 family starting at school and then walking down to Lesmurdie Falls for lunch. One of the 7’s said it was the best retreat she had ever been on.

A special thank you goes to the Year 11 students who coached and supported the teams throughout the day.

I encourage all families to speak with their child about study habits and study planners, as we have recently been working on this in PCP and they have been trying to create a study planner to assist them with the second half of the year.

From the Heads of Learning - Digital Technologies

“Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.” — Steve Jobs

The Digital Technologies learning area provides students with essential skills required for a rapidly changing world—problem solving, creativity, coding, and critical thinking—while helping them understand how technology shapes the way we live and work. At our school, Digital Technologies is split into Computer Technology and Business Studies, giving students both technical and real‑world applications.

During Term One, our classrooms were buzzing with imagination and innovation: Year 7 students became members of an intergalactic pet adoption agency, designing creature compatibility cards to match pets with customers, while Year 8 students rivalled Google engineers by creating animated Google logos to celebrate events. Not to be outdone, Year 9 and 10 students coded their own websites using HTML and explored the exciting possibilities of AI. Looking ahead to Term Two, Years 7 and 8 will harness the power of Python to create programs, while senior Digital Technologies students will further expand their skills through challenging, creative projects—continuing to enjoy learning by doing.

Business Studies students have been equally engaged, developing life‑ready skills they will use well beyond the classroom. In Term One, Year 9 Money Wise students created job‑ready portfolios, including functional résumés, practiced interview skills, and even selected appropriate outfits for their first part‑time jobs. This term, they will produce a technology‑themed magazine, strengthen practical Excel skills by planning a party budget, and learn how to choose the best mobile phone and savings plans. Year 10 Money Moves students extended their Excel, data, and networking knowledge and will explore purchasing a first car and planning a well‑earned holiday within a budget. Meanwhile, our Year 11 and 12 ATAR Accounting and Finance students are preparing confidently for their first examinations, while Year 12 Certificate III Business students are building on last year’s Certificate II Workplace Skills to complete their current qualification.

Across all year groups, students are highly engaged and genuinely enjoying their learning—proving that Digital Technologies and Business studies are not just subjects for today, but essential pathways for future success.

Please click onto the link below to view a sample of the fabulous work the Digital Technologies students have been creating: HERE

Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP): Racing Toward a Clean Energy Future

Our Digital Technologies Wednesday after‑school H2GP Club is racing ahead! H2GP (Hydrogen Grand Prix) is an exciting, global STEM competition where students learn about renewable energy, climate change, and engineering by designing, building, and racing hydrogen‑powered remote-controlled cars. More than just a race, H2GP gives students real, hands‑on experience with clean energy technologies as they assemble their vehicle from the ground up, install electronics, and work with a real hydrogen fuel cell. Through testing, tuning, and teamwork, students develop problem‑solving skills while learning how future zero‑emission vehicles work.

Students in our club have already begun building their car and are now shifting into competition mode as they prepare to be race‑ready by early November. From the club, a team of five students will be selected to represent our school in competition: two drivers, two engineers, and one team manager. This experience encourages collaboration, leadership, and innovation, helping students bridge classroom learning with real‑world engineering and sustainability skills — and inspiring the next generation of clean‑energy thinkers and doers.

Penned By Our Boarders - Legacy Lanterns

This past Saturday, 10 of our boarding girls volunteered to go to Stirk Park Lake and join our local community at this year’s Legacy Lanterns event for Christian Service Learning.

This year’s Legacy Lanterns event had many service attendants such as Ambulance Wish WA and Red Cross Foundation, it also included guest speakers and speeches from Kalamunda’s local mayor, Margaret Thompson, along with Graham Taylor, a local Budimaya-Amangu and Yamatji elder, who briefly spoke about Indigenous grief and our local community. As well as a facilitated grounding exercise to help the participants connect and be open to how they felt and the strong emotions that could have been evoked.

After the openings and addresses, there was a moment of silence followed by a live solo harpist, tying a serene and emotional aura to the already peaceful night. It also gave the participants an opportunity to write a personal message on their lanterns, many were dedications to people who have passed, though there were also drawings of places and people, to represent their love and grief for things they no longer had.

At 5:50pm, our boarding girls went around and spoke to some of the families and individuals whilst they directed where to go and helped light their candles. Even though it was an emotional time, the girls were friendly, kind, and selfless in their acts to bond with members of our community, demonstrating our Christ-like values at St. Brigids.

Many of the girls also released their own lanterns into the lake and connected deeply to our local community.

It was a beautiful and tranquil night, and it was a wonderful experience being able to represent our school as welcoming and proud students and people.

Charlotte L, Year 12, Selected for Prestigious Marine Science Program on Maria Island, Tasmania

Charlotte Llewellyn (Year 12) recently completed two university-level subjects through the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and the University of Tasmania Connections Program, gaining valuable hands-on experience in marine science.

She was one of 24 students selected nationally from a competitive pool of 400 applicants to take part in the intensive Maria Island field program. Over the course of the week, Charlotte joined a team of emerging scientists on Maria Island, located off Tasmania’s east coast, where they collected and analysed data as part of an ongoing longitudinal study comparing changes in marine ecosystems over time.

A key highlight of the program was Charlotte’s involvement in a team presentation on the Maria Island Intertidal Communities, showcasing their research findings developed during the fieldwork experience.

The program is a five-day, field-based university unit designed to engage and inspire students through immersive, hands-on learning in marine science. Students are challenged to explore critical environmental issues affecting marine ecosystems, including climate change, invasive species, pollution, marine debris, and their broader social and economic impacts.

Participants gain credit towards a University of Tasmania degree and experience practical techniques typically taught at university level or in professional scientific settings. The program also includes a final presentation day at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) in Hobart, where students share their research findings.

Living and learning conditions on Maria Island are intentionally immersive, with students staying in shared accommodation within the historic Penitentiary, working in makeshift field laboratories, and preparing and sharing meals together in a communal environment.

Charlotte’s participation in this program reflects her commitment to academic excellence and her growing passion for marine science and environmental research. Congratulations Charlotte, we look forward to seeing your future endeavors in the world of science.
