Model Schools Updates

Our Model Schools team is growing! We had to say goodbye to Peggy Jones this summer and we wish her well in her retirement.

I'll let our Alison introduce herself:

Hi! I am very excited to be joining Laurie and the Model Schools team at WSWHE BOCES in the Instructional Support Specialist Integration of Technology into Instructional Practices position! I am entering my 14th year of teaching. My most recent experience has been at Argyle Central School District as the 7th and 11th grade English teacher for the past 7 years, as well as the Educational Technology Trainer since 2020. It was when given that role that my passion for all things "ed tech" really took hold and I knew my strengths could be utilized by helping teachers make their lives easier through apps, tips, and tricks that they may not have known before!

I have a BA in International Studies and a BA in English from Russell Sage College and earned my MST in English 7-12 from SUNY Plattsburgh. In my time outside of work, you can find me chasing after my sons William and Timothy and daughter Frances! I look forward to meeting and working with you all!

Model Schools Liaison Meeting

It's been a while since we had our Model Schools Liaisons meetings! We will begin to have them again this fall. This group meets quarterly at WSWHE BOCES. We discuss topics such as Google Admin, edtech tools, cybersecurity, and more. I look forward to these meetings and cannot wait to get them started again!

The CSForNY State Summit on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st, 2022 to learn about how K-16 educators in New York can increase access to computer science education for all students. The conference is free, virtual, and open to all to attend.

New York has new K-12 Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards that must be implemented by September 2024. All schools and districts should also be aware of new CS teacher certifications, teacher preparation programs, and training opportunities designed for teachers with no background in CS.

The CSForNY State Summit is an opportunity to build and amplify momentum to reach more students with quality, equitable, and sustainable K-16 computer science education programs. Participants will hear from schools and districts that have already built K-12 CS pathways along with experts from the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), NYSCATE, NYSED, CSForAll, the College Board, Cornell Tech, and more.

Register for the 2022 CSForNY State Summit here on the summit website.

Every New York student deserves access to computer science regardless of zip code, race, gender, or economic background. I hope that you’ll inform others about this great opportunity.

Common Sense Media

There's a deep truth about social media: Internet culture is so fast-paced, so insatiable, and so fickle that you can never quite pin down what it is or what it all means. Even for the "extremely online," it's nearly impossible to keep up with all of the memes, trends, and viral posts.

Can't Hold Down Hands-On Learning

The years 2020 and 2021 brought paradigm shifts to every aspect of life, and education was no exception. It's not surprising that hands-on learning has had to shift. But what remains is the impact of learning by doing. Whether that's at home, in person, individually, or within a group - providing engaging opportunities can make all the difference.
