Spelling and Grammar

zoo, on, come, don't, will, book, food, soon, tool, spoon.

Grammar: sentence mechanics (punctuation/capital letters/spacing)

Word Family: -oo (two sounds: for example book and spoon)

We will begin reading The Wizard of Oz. Our focus will be on the setting and the characters as we read the first few chapters. We will learn about the great state of Kansas in order to make non-fiction connections to the story on Monday. The rest of the week we will be learning new vocabulary and meeting Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow.

Math

We will be learning how to solve word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20 with unknowns as any one of the terms in the problem.

Examples:

2 + 4 = [ ]

3 + [ ] = 7

[ ] - 5 = 3

Science/Social Studies

We will explore the patterns and cycles we find in the sky (sun, moon, day and night), as well as the seasons. At the end of the week we will observe, classify and learn about rocks.

**Look for our class "Moon Book" to be coming home in the next few weeks.

We will be collecting canned FRUIT all week for the canned food drive. Help 1st grade be the 1st place winner!
