6th Grade-Weather and Climate

Weather and Climate presents an opportunity for students to apply their learning about the flow of energy and matter from the previous unit. Students ask questions and collect data about the weather to understand why changes in weather and climate occur. They develop models to explain how complex interactions driven by energy cause changes in weather conditions and the patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates. This unit presents additional opportunities to build skills in developing models, and crafting explanations.

7th Grade-Changing Properties of Matter

Students distinguish between physical and chemical properties and physical and chemical changes. They actually combine a series of substances and then decide whether the reaction was physical or chemical. Students also learn about the conservation of mass during a chemical reaction from a physical as well as a molecular level. They use virtual simulations to “see” models of how atoms are rearranged during chemical reactions. In lesson 8, students are asked to design hot or cold packs based on their knowledge of chemistry
