Mr. Mauck's Musings
Today is the start of Labor Day Weekend and it is hot! School will not be in session on Monday September 7th in observance of the holiday. Students will also not be at school on Wednesday September 16th for a staff professional development day. I am always impressed by our students and staff, but this year is unique. I have noticed so many students walking down the hall will look me in the eye and say hello and ask how are you doing today. I subbed in Mr. Yarbrough's freshman Biology class and most of the students thanked me as they left. I walked through the Science department and all five classes I stopped by were engaged in laboratory activities. We are very fortunate to have wonderful people in the building.
Recognitions:
Congratulations to Carysn Peterson and Mrs. Julie Henke on their JHS student and staff of the week selections. Last Saturday, the JHS Athletic Department hosted the Athletic Hall of Fame celebration. Jasper High School Athletic Director, Mr. Phil Kendall, was inducted as an individual recipient. I have included a photo of our Little Wildcat staff. GJCS has a day care and pre-school program for its employees. JHS is fortunate enough to have the Little Wildcats program housed in the school. We have many of our Ed Professions students volunteer in the program. Next year we will be able to offer college-level early education programing to our students. Mrs. Mehringer's business class has begun a School Based Enterprise. Wildcat Corner features apparel and school spirit items. The business is entirely student run and provides an outstanding learning experience.
School Information:
Please take a second to read the Student Academic Services section. Our counselors have just completed class presentations and are in the process of checking on our seniors progress. There is information about scholarships, college fairs, and the October 7th testing day. Mrs. Burns has updated the Book Banter page and has helped with our recognition of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. The JHS Interact Club and FFA are still collecting board games and canned food for their service projects. You can drop off your donations at the main office. The Dubois County Museum and the City of Jasper have provided us with fall activity calendars. There are some really fun events scheduled in the next few months.
Student Council and Prom Fundraising:
The Fall Homecoming Court has been selected. Congratulations to each classes' representatives. Our Fall Pep Session will be Thursday afternoon and homecoming week will be the 14-18th. The theme this year is environments. We will have hall decorating, dress up days, and class competitions. Class officers are preparing backdrops for homecoming festivities. Take a minute and vote for your favorite class bulletin board. Next week will be suicide prevention week and Wildcat Cares and SADD are teaming up for some student awareness activities. Finally, the junior class is selling BBQ Chicken Dinners to help raise funds for prom and other class purchases. Orders are due by Friday, September 18, and tickets will be delivered the following week. Dinners will be picked up drive-thru style at JHS on Sunday, October 11. No tickets will be sold at the door. If you are a junior and need a fundraiser form, please stop by room 411 or 413. If you would like to purchase a ticket, please contact a junior to place your order!
Have a wonderful weekend and Go Cats!

Wildcat Corner
Jasper High School is fortunate to have a school-based enterprise (SBE), our school store. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate standards in marketing, finance, hospitality, human resources, and management. SBEs provide realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction. The Wildcat Corner is a major learning component in the Business Program. The teacher and coordinator for this program is Mrs. Jessica Mehringer.
The success of the Wildcat Corner depends on the commitment of students in the Small Business and Business Administration Capstone classes as these students are responsible for working in the school store as part of their work based learning experience.
Wildcat Corner Store is OPEN for business. Our website is www.wildcatcornerstore.com

BOOK BANTER
September is a busy month in the library! We are honoring those who lost their lives as well as those first responders who saved lives this 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Befitting the library themes of travel and adventure, we are also celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15. There are many books about Hispanic culture and books by Hispanic authors on the window table. Check out a book and learn something new about another country or person. Thank you to Catarina and Lety for helping ready this display!
Later this month we will also celebrate Pirate’s Day, Dot Day, Johnny Appleseed Day, and Constitution Day.
September book of the month is Shannon Messenger’s Keeper of the Lost Cities. (currently checked out but can be put on hold)
“The protagonist of the series, Sophie, is a twelve-year-old elf with telepathy who lives in San Diego, California with a human family.
In the first book, Sophie, while on a school field trip, is tracked down by a teenage elf, Fitz, who reveals that she is an elf. He discusses the reality of their world with Sophie and tells her that she has to move to the Lost Cities—a place unknown to humankind where elves, trolls, ogres, goblins, gnomes and dwarves live in harmony. She is forced to leave her human family behind and stay with an elvin couple, Grady and Edaline, who later adopt her. She starts school at a noble elvin academy named Foxfire.
The main conflict in the series is between the Black Swan, a rebel organization, and the Neverseen, a group of criminal extremists. Sophie learns that the Black Swan are her creators, and that her old neighbor from the human world, Mr. Forkle, is the director of the Black Swan's Project Moonlark, in which she was created. Her biological parents are unknown due to catastrophes that could be created if their identities are discovered.” (wikipedia)
Thank you to Bairon for reading “Vincent Paints His House” by Tedd Arnold to our little seniors.
We’ve had many submissions for the September drawing!
Stop by the library to write the title of your book and its geographical location on a sticky note and put it on the map. Then submit your name on a slip of paper for the drawing.
Happy Labor Day Weekend and Happy Reading!!
