🎨 Art Buddies! K-2 OSOB Self-Portrait Project
We are thrilled to continue the art component of our One School, One Book program! This year, we are creating a unique mentorship opportunity by pairing our K-2 artists with our 4th and 5th-grade students to create vibrant, Frida Kahlo-inspired self-portraits.
Project Overview
The goal is for our younger students to explore their identities through art, while our older students practice leadership and encouragement as "Art Buddies."
The Theme: Self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo, focusing on bright colors, nature, and personal symbols.
The Resource: Our talented art teacher, Julie Lambert, has created a wonderful instructional slideshow to guide both the mentors and the artists through the process.
Classroom Roles
To ensure a smooth and creative session, please share these expectations with your students:
For K-2 Teachers:
Encourage your students to think about things that make them special (favorite animals, flowers, or hobbies) to include in their background.
Remind them that their "Buddy" is there to help them brainstorm and stay on track.
For 4th-5th Grade Teachers:
Please prep your students to act as Art Coaches.
Their role is to provide guidance, help with tricky pencil strokes, and offer positive feedback.
The Golden Rule: The K-2 student should do the actual drawing; the mentor provides the "creative spark" and support!
Getting Started
You can find the K-2 OSOB Self-Portrait Instructions and Julie’s slideshow attached below.

🎨 Portrait Prep: Next Steps for Grades 3–5
For 3rd–5th Grade Teachers: Please hold onto your students' self-portraits for the time being. To help with the display process, the following materials will be dropped off at your PLC this Thursday!
Construction paper for mounting.
Two cans of spray adhesive (per grade level).
A full class set of student artwork labels.
The Deadline: Please have students affix their artwork onto the construction paper and place a label in the lower right-hand corner before April 17th.
