6th Grade Social Studies
Civilization Explorers
Archaeologists and Anthropologists in 6th Grade Social Studies!
This week, Mrs. Featherstone’s 6th grade social studies students became world-builders! After learning the 8 features of civilization, each student designed their very own island civilization and built a 3-D model to bring it to life.
Then the real fun began. Students traded places and became archaeologists and anthropologists, exploring one another’s islands and studying the models for clues to uncover each civilization’s 8 features, with no explanations from the creator. Afterward, they checked their detective work against the brochure or Google Slide each builder had put together, packed with details about their civilization.
This is exactly the kind of teaching that makes students fall in love with learning. When kids get to create, explore, and play detective, they aren’t just memorizing facts. They’re thinking critically, working together, and owning their learning, and those are the lessons that stick long after the unit ends. Mrs. Featherstone is an amazing teacher who brings so much creativity and heart to her classroom, and it shows in the excitement of her students. We are so lucky to have her on our Gray Stone Day School Middle School team!
7th Grade ELA
Utopia Under Construction: 7th Grade Builds a Better World
UTOPIAN SOCIETY- POSSIBLE OR NOT?
7th Grade ELA students recently completed their Create a Utopia projects, to go along with their reading of the novel The Giver. Students were tasked with creating an entire community, complete with a government, economy, laws, culture, and daily life. In addition to the project itself, students also wrote essays describing their utopias and explaining if a utopia is ever possible. (Spoiler alert- it’s NOT!) Their design choices were creative and showed much critical thinking and planning! Great job!
Behind the scenes: Projects like this don’t happen by accident. They happen when a teacher believes students can do big, complex thinking and then gives them the structure and encouragement to rise to it. Mrs. Thompson set high expectations, and our students met them. They weren’t just reading about a community in a novel. They built one, defended their choices, and then stepped back to ask the hard question of whether perfection is even possible. That kind of layered thinking, moving from creating to analyzing to evaluating, is exactly what deep understanding looks like.
And the best part? The students had fun doing it. High expectations, strong teaching, and a little creative freedom make a powerful combination. Thank you, Cindy Thompson, for challenging our 7th graders and for making The Giver come alive in your classroom!
A Season of Pink: Remembering, Honoring, and Hoping Together
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in our school family, it’s a good moment to pause and think about the people behind the ribbon.
Nearly all of us know someone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. It might be a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, colleague, or neighbor. Some of our families are walking that road right now. Some have walked it and come out the other side, and some are carrying the memory of someone they love and lost. Wherever you are on that journey, please know that you are seen, you are held in our thoughts, and you are never walking alone in this community.
To the survivors: your strength is an inspiration. To those in treatment: we’re cheering you on every step. To the families and caregivers: your love and quiet resilience matter more than you know. And to those we remember with heavy but grateful hearts: your light continues in the people who loved you.
Awareness matters because it leads to early detection, support, and hope, and every conversation, every act of kindness, and every pink ribbon brings us a little closer to a cure.
Join us on October 26 for our Breast Cancer Awareness Soccer Match!
Come out and support our Men’s Soccer Team at their final home match of the season. We’re asking everyone to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a simple way to show up for our team and for everyone in our community who has been affected by this disease. Let’s fill the stands with pink and cheer on our players together.
Thank you for being the kind of community that shows up for one another, in the stands and in life. I’m grateful to walk alongside you.

Knightfest Highlights
Knightfest: A Day of Fun, Service, and Community
What a day! Knightfest, our Middle School event hosted by the Gray Stone High School Leadership Club, was a big hit with our students. We are so grateful to Ms. Jennifer Rinaggio, the club sponsor, whose dedication and hard work made it all possible. Ms. Rinaggio directs and leads her students to put on an event that is fun and exciting for our middle schoolers while also raising funds for the club. She models, and her students live out, the characteristics of service, integrity, and responsibility. Thank you, Ms. Rinaggio!
And what a crew of high school volunteers! They ran stations including plinko, duck toss, king of the mountain, frisbee toss, inflatables, and face painting, plus a pull-up bar to test strength. There was something for everyone. Students also enjoyed treats from the fried doughnut truck and Kona Ice. New this year, the leadership team offered a hot dog, chips, and water option so students could grab an affordable meal or snack. What a thoughtful touch!
Our middle schoolers deserve a big shout-out too. They acted safely and responsibly all day, and it looked like they were having a ball! It was a joy to watch them laugh, play, and enjoy time together.
We also want to give a huge thank-you to our Middle School staff, who went above and beyond to help with supervision and safety. I am so grateful for this hard-working team! They love our students, and it shows in their dedication and devotion to doing whatever it takes to make this a great year. We are truly better together!
Go Knights!

OCTOBER IS.....
National Bullying Prevention Month
On Wednesday, October 21, we’re joining schools across the country in celebrating Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. Our message is simple: together against bullying, united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
We invite every Knight to wear orange that day as a visible sign that no one here stands alone. When we all show up in the same bright color, we send a clear message to every student: you are seen, you are valued, and bullying has no place in our school, online, or in our community.
Grab something orange, wear it proudly, and help us fill the halls with kindness!

LEADERSHIP CLUB SPONSORS PAJAMA DAY
PJ Day is Coming! 🌙
Get ready to trade in your everyday outfit for your coziest pajamas! Our Middle School Leadership Club is sponsoring a PJ Day fundraiser, and everyone is invited to join in the fun.
How it works: Wear your pajamas to school and bring $1 to participate. It’s a welcome break from the regular dress code, with no consequences.
A quick reminder: Pajamas still need to meet dress code in all other ways. Please keep your comfy clothes school-appropriate so everyone can enjoy the day.
Why it matters: Every dollar raised helps our Leadership Club sponsor special events for our middle school students throughout the year. So you get comfy, and our whole community benefits.
Slippers, fuzzy socks, and favorite sleepwear are all part of the fun. Thank you for supporting our student leaders!
