In 2002, American rapper Eminem released the song "Lose Yourself" as part of the soundtrack for the motion picture 8 Mile. In the opening stanza, Eminem asks the question:

"Look ... if you had one shot or one opportunity ...

To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment ...

Would you capture it, or just let it slip?"

The Brickies have been WORK WORK WORKing HARD to make the most of the opportunity to compete this winter. All in all, it's been quite an adventure ... one worth every moment because our kids have SHINED BRIGHT!! This week alone gave us moments involving a SPECTACULAR SENIOR NIGHT, a COLLEGE SIGNING, an IHSAA SECTIONAL, and an IHSAA REGIONAL!

Lose yourself for a few moments ... it's time for BricksCenter!

On Tuesday night, the Brickies welcomed the Whiting Oilers to The Friendly City for SENIOR NIGHT 2025 and the regular season finale. Before tip-off, Hobart recognized senior players Brett Davis, Aiden Leonard, Brian Howard & Felix Lopez along with cheerleaders Destinee Ayala, Maya Guzman, Skyler Kitchen, Cheyenne Ksenak, Brooke Royce & Maddi Sammarco-Varlas for their commitment & dedication towards Brickie athletics during the course of their careers. After tip-off, our boys left NO DIGGITY ... NO DOUBT! After 8 minutes, Hobart led 20-8 and by halftime the lead exploded to 54-15 ...WOW! With a running clock in the 2nd half, the Bricks cruised to a 94-37 VICTORY!! Junior Ryan Basham poured in a game-high 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting ...senior Aidan Leonard recorded ANOTHER double-double with 13 points and a career high 21 rebounds to go with his 5 assists ... junior Jordan Johnson added 9 points and 8 assists and sophomore Paxson Hicko chipped in 12 points and 4 steals in the win!

Hobart finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-14 and will face the winner of Valparaiso-Merrillville next Friday in IHSAA Sectional Semifinal action! Gymnastics

On Tuesday night, the Lady Bricks had a final tune-up prior to the IHSAA Sectional with their regular season finale at home against Lake Central. Despite not competing at full strength, OUR GIRLS SHINED!! Senior Elizabeth Crespo, in her final meet in the Frank Kurth Fieldhouse, was 3rd on the vault! Against a very good LC squad, sophomore Kaya Goodpaster placed 4th overall in the all-around, classmate Natalia Lucio finished 3rd on the bars and fellow 10th grader Avrie Robb was 6th on the bars! GREAT JOB LADIES!!

On Saturday morning, competition in the 52nd IHSAA Girls Gymnastics State Tournament Series began over at Crown Point High School. There is no doubt that Sectional 1 is the most difficult in Indiana with 14-time state champion Valparaiso, 6-time state champion Chesterton and the host Bulldogs ... state champions in both 2022 & 2024 ... all chalking it up at the same venue and pursuing the same goal - advance! The top 3 scoring teams ... along with the top 6 individuals in each event ... qualify for next week's IHSAA Regional.

Avrie Robb was OUTSTANDING in placing 20th overall in the all-around competition with a SEASON BEST score of 31.850! Her 16th place finish on the beam was Hobart's BEST score of the day at an 8.725!! WOW!! Kaya Goodpaster was the only other Brickie gymnast to compete in all 4 events - finishing 31st in the All-around! Natalia Lucio had Hobart's best performance on the bars with 22nd overall and Elizabeth Crespo was the top Brickie gymnast on the vault with a 31st place finish!

Hobart placed 10th in the 14-team field with a 91.525 ... our 2nd best team score of the entire season!! Even though the Brickies did not advance, it was a STRONG FINISH to the winter season and with 3 sophomores in the lineup, the future LOOKS BRIGHT!!

Valparaiso won the sectional ... defending state champion Crown Point finished 2nd and Lake Central was 3rd as a team to advance to next week.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH CRESPO AND OUR GIRLS FOR A GREAT SEASON! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK WORK WORK!!

Diving

On Tuesday night, sophomore Aiden Bailey joined 19 other divers @ Valparaiso High School for the IHSAA Diving Regional to compete for a spot in Saturday's STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! Aiden qualified for the regional competition after placing 3rd at last week's IHSAA Sectional!! In order to advance to STATE, he needed to place in the TOP 8 at Tuesday's Regional.

The Diving Regional is broken into 3 segments. The first segment includes 5 dives. The second segment includes 3 ...and the 3rd & final one includes the last 3 of 11 total dives. In order to qualify for the "Regional Finals" - the 3rd & final segment, divers must be in the top 12 places.

On Tuesday, Aiden had a rough first dive, but rallied over the next 4 to put himself in 13th after 5 dives! Needing to gain some more ground to get into the finals, he focused HARD and BATTLED! Unfortunately, so did his competitors and they were actually the ones who gained ground ...dropping Aiden to 14th through 8 dives and keeping him from qualifying for the finals. It was a tough finish, but overall a GREAT YEAR for the super soph who was the Northwest Crossroads Conference RUNNER UP and a first-time REGIONAL QUALFIER!

As a freshman, Aiden scored a 304 and placed 7th at the IHSAA Sectional. This year as a sophomore, he scored 334, placed 3rd and advanced to the Regional! There is no doubt that the new Chairman of the Board at HHS will use this as motivation to continue improving and take another step next year!

GREAT JOB AIDEN! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!

NEXT LEVEL

On average, only about 1 in 13 high school athletes get the chance to compete at the next level, which is about 7%. This covers all divisions of the NCAA (I, II & III), NAIA and the Junior College level. So, when our Brickies get that opportunity, we CELEBRATE!!

Wednesday evening, Brickie senior Kilee Hite signed her letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Governors State University! Kilee will serve & volley for the Jaguars next year as a member of their women's volleyball team! Governors State is a member of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and competes in the CCAC (Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

Kilee is a 3-yr letterwinner and earned All-NCC honors this past fall for the Lady Brickie volleyball team!

CONGRATULATIONS KILEE!! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU AND EXTREMELY EXCITED TO SEE WHAT YOU DO AT THE NEXT LEVEL!!
