The Wildkat Word: Jan & Feb 2026
Happy New Year! I hope the holiday season provided time for rest, reflection, and meaningful moments with those you love. As we move through January and February, we are well into the second semester, and I’m excited about the growth, accomplishments, and opportunities that lie ahead for our students and staff.
The start of a new year is a natural time for reflection and renewed focus. Across Willis ISD, our classrooms are full of energy as students set goals, deepen their learning, and continue building the skills that will carry them forward. From academic milestones to athletic competitions, fine arts performances, and countless everyday successes, there is so much to celebrate during this busy and rewarding season.
This semester also marks an important step forward for our district with the establishment of a Long-Range Planning Committee. This group will help guide future decisions by studying district needs and planning thoughtfully for growth and sustainability. We are committed to keeping our community informed as this work progresses, and updates will be shared during Board of Trustees meetings, on the district website, and through our social media platforms.
Across Willis ISD, our schools continue to thrive thanks to the strength of our Wildkat community. I am grateful for our families’ partnership and ongoing support in creating environments where students feel safe, encouraged, and inspired each day.
As we continue through the semester, please know that we remain committed to open communication and to providing a nurturing environment where every student can reach their full potential. Thank you for entrusting us with your children and for being such an important part of the Willis ISD family.
Together, let’s make the months ahead filled with meaningful learning, growth, and Wildkat pride.
With gratitude,
Dr. Kimberley James
Superintendent, Willis ISD
We’re excited to launch a new podcast series designed to bring our community closer to the people and stories behind Willis ISD.
In the very first episode of Drive Time with Dr. James, Superintendent Dr. James sits down with Dr. Michelle Hall, Principal of A.R. Turner Elementary, for an honest, meaningful conversation about what makes Willis special, from the deep pride felt across our schools to the powerful role public education plays in shaping lives.
Dr. Hall shares her personal journey into education, the experiences that shaped her leadership, and why creating a sense of belonging for every student matters so deeply. Together, they reflect on community, connection, and the heart behind the work happening in our schools every day.
Whether you’re driving to work or tuning in from home, Drive Time with Dr. James offers a thoughtful look into the people, purpose, and pride that define Willis ISD.
We hope you’ll join us for the ride!

This holiday season, the Wildkat Resource Center once again showed what it truly means to care for one another. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our incredible volunteers, Christmas was made brighter for many students and families across our district.
Your willingness to step up ensured families had the support they needed during a meaningful time of year. That commitment speaks to the strength and compassion of our Wildkat community.
We are deeply grateful to the Wildkat Resource Center team, our volunteers, and our community partners. Thank you for making a difference during the holidays and throughout the year!
In December, community members enjoyed Floral Design Night, a hands-on workshop where they created festive floral arrangements while spending time together and getting into the holiday spirit.

Our custodial team plays an essential role in keeping our schools running.
Through early mornings, late nights, and everything in between, they cared for our campuses throughout the fall semester with pride, dedication, and heart.
We are grateful for every moment spent keeping our schools safe, welcoming, and ready for learning, as well as for the care and commitment they show to our students and staff every single day.
Thank you to our custodial team for being such an important part of our Willis ISD family!
Last month, this team came together to sponsor 18 Willis ISD transportation families, providing holiday gifts for 43 children. To make the season even more special, Santa stopped by the transportation department to personally deliver bikes, scooters, and learning toys.
Their generosity didn’t stop there. The team also adopted a local nursing home, Forest Cottage Senior Care, ensuring 12 residents felt remembered and valued this Christmas. With Santa by their side, they delivered gifts and spent meaningful time spreading joy and smiles.
We are incredibly grateful to community partners such as Humanity Squared (Dru Kahlenberg) and Golden Corral Buffet & Grill (Kirk Murphy), whose support helped make this possible, and we couldn’t be more proud of the leadership, kindness, and “family first” spirit shown by our transportation team.
Thank you for reminding us what it truly means to be a Wildkat!
As we reflect on this past year, we want to pause and celebrate a few of the incredible child nutrition employees who have made a meaningful difference for our students and teams.
We’re proud to recognize Willis High School as our Kitchen of the Month for November and Lagway Elementary for December. Both kitchens exemplify excellence through teamwork, communication, and pride in their work, supporting one another and stepping in wherever needed to ensure students are served with care and purpose.
We also celebrate Tammy Shehane (Roark Early Education Center) as our Child Nutrition Employee of the Month for November and Otilia Fuentes (Roark Early Education Center) as our Child Nutrition Employee of the Month for December. Tammy and Otilia consistently go above and beyond for students and coworkers alike, always ready to help and lead with dedication and heart.
These recognitions serve as a reminder of the incredible people who power our district every day. We are deeply thankful for all of our employees whose commitment, kindness, and teamwork continue to make a difference!

In this issue, we’re highlighting January’s focus on gratitude, mentorship, and mental wellness, encouraging families to start the new year with intentional practices that support healthy minds and strong relationships. From National Thank You Month to National Mentoring Month, we’re celebrating the power of appreciation, connection, and the positive impact caring adults can have in students’ lives through programs like R.I.S.E.
We’re also sharing practical tools to support family wellness, including healthy New Year’s resolutions for children that emphasize balance, kindness, sleep, physical activity, and academic goal-setting. January’s resources also spotlight Human Trafficking Awareness Month, offering families important information on warning signs, digital safety, and trusted resources to help keep students safe.
In February, we turn our attention to connection, kindness, and student support. We celebrate National School Counseling Week by recognizing the essential role school counselors play in helping students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Families will also find resources tied to Random Acts of Kindness Week and Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, along with articles and guidance on navigating technology use, relationships, and mental health.
Together, these months focus on awareness and connection, empowering families with the tools, resources, and support they need to help every student grow with confidence.
We’re excited to announce our district partnership with Daybreak Health to offer confidential, school-connected wellness support for students ages 5–19.
Trusted by 100+ schools nationwide, Daybreak’s licensed clinicians work with students and families to strengthen focus, manage stress, improve communication, and build healthy routines.

Keep track of daily transportation updates with the My Ride K-12 app!
My Ride K-12 gives you instant access to your child’s bus route, pickup location, and schedule. It also enables the district to send real-time notifications about delays, changes, or other important updates. If your student rides the bus, this app is ESSENTIAL; it’s the primary way our transportation team communicates with families.
*Please note that this year, each student will be given a student ID to scan when boarding and exiting the bus.
To download the app: Visit the App Store or Google Play Store, type in "My Ride K-12" and select "Install/Download/Get," or click the links below.
In Willis ISD, safety is our number one priority, and we will not tolerate behavior that threatens the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
Students and parents can utilize the district’s anonymous alerts system to report any suspicious or known activity. K12 Anonymous Alert allows for anonymous reporting (or you can add your information, and we can reply). It also sends messages to school and district administrators 24 hours a day directly on our phones. The alert system can be accessed on the Willis ISD mobile app or on the website linked below!
Education is a team effort. When students, parents, teachers, and staff work together, we set the stage for a successful year.
Please take time to review the Student Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Dress Code with your student. These resources provide clear expectations, build consistency, and help ensure that every Wildkat can learn in a safe and positive environment.
Our "Calendars" webpage houses three calendars for community use: a district calendar, an athletics calendar, and a fine arts calendar. These calendars are updated routinely to keep you informed about upcoming events.
All Willis ISD campuses also have a campus calendar located on their homepage.
As part of our efforts to be more environmentally friendly, embrace innovative technology, and maintain fiscal responsibility, we have transitioned from paper to electronic flyer delivery. Our district cooperates with approved community partners by posting digital flyers online and distributing them electronically through our service provider, Peachjar.
If you're a community organization seeking to have your flyer distributed to Willis ISD students and families via Peachjar, please follow these six steps:
- Visit www.peachjar.com.
- Hover over the tab titled Community Organizations.
- Click on Why Peachjar?
- Select "Get Started Now."
- Register your organization.
- Follow the steps to upload your flyer for approval.
If your event is free and benefits school-aged children, you may be eligible for the Peachjar Community Free Flyer Program. If you believe your flyer meets these guidelines, please submit it to support@peachjar.com for consideration.
You will receive periodic emails about local opportunities through Peachjar, but you can also view your campus Peachjar board anytime by clicking the “Campus Peachjar” button on your school’s website. There, you’ll find flyers relevant to your student.
