Our Sturgeon Have Arrived! Our Sturgeon Have Arrived!

The Sturgeon in the Classroom initiative operates under the Sturgeon for Tomorrow program based out of Black Lake, Michigan. Its mission is to support fisheries managers in rehabilitating Lake Sturgeon populations, advance education, facilitate charitable and scientific initiatives, and engage in research necessary to achieve these goals.

Each year, Mr. Hicks' Environmental Science classroom receives a juvenile sturgeon from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MI DNR) to care for throughout the school year. Students are responsible for maintaining the tank, monitoring water quality, and feeding the fish. Near the end of the school year, the sturgeon is released into its natural habitat. Before release, it is tagged with a PIT chip, allowing future students to receive updates on its location, growth, and health when it is recaptured. This project exemplifies place-based stewardship education, as students engage with their local watershed, study a threatened species, and contribute to improving regional fisheries.

We received our sturgeon this past Saturday. Students from my various classes voted to name it “Fin Diesel.” The fish has acclimated well to its new environment and is eating regularly. While in our care, it will be fed a diet of bloodworms, as prescribed by the MI DNR. Students are eager to participate in this project and take great pride in caring for the fish.

We will raise our sturgeon until early May. At that time, Mr. Hicks will travel to the Black River for its release under the supervision of the DNR. While there, he will also assist in tagging, measuring, and documenting wild sturgeon populations. By the time of release, our sturgeon is expected to reach a length of approximately 18–24 inches.
