Miller Elementary Weekly Update
For the Week of September 28, 2026
Hello Miller Families!
It's hard to believe that we are officially in the fall season! The cooler morning temperatures are a clear sign that things are changing as we move into the months ahead. Thank you so much for sending your children to school in layers, such as sweatshirts and jackets, so they can stay warm and comfortable during outdoor recess. It's important to remember that so many of these cool-weather items look alike, we kindly ask that you write your child’s name on the inside label of all jackets, hats, and sweatshirts when possible. This small step helps us quickly return any lost items to their rightful owners when they end up in our lost and found!
Next week we will be flipping the calendar to October and preparing for a fun-filled month! Stay tuned for our newsletter next week with important information about Fall Parent Teacher Conferences, our Fall Festival Parties and Costume Parade!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and GO GREENMEN!
Kindly,
Maria Goodman

Ufli Systematic Phonics Instruction and Heggerty Phonemic Awareness
The Aurora Schools are committed to developing a love of reading and to help all children become life long readers! That begins at an early age at Miller when we help children develop skills to understand concepts of print, listening comprehension, developing letter-sound correspondence and helping the young child put that all together to blend and segment words.
Just like children didn't learn to roll, crawl, walk and talk at the same rate, their literacy development will evolve with careful explicit instruction all while following research based practices. Our curriculum office has spent countless hours, months, and years researching and vetting what systematic approach we will use in the Aurora Schools.
Beginning in preschool, you will see that we use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness approach to develop an understanding of the spoken language and how to listen and hear individual sounds. This carries through kindergarten, first and even second grade which will continue to build and enhance skills. Then in Kindergarten, we use UFli for our systematic phonics instruction that helps children learn to build and write letters and words. These activities might feel tricky for some as it requires us to build stamina for sitting, working through something new, and of course using their careful listening skills. Ask your child what they like about UFli or Heggerty!

Teaching School Expectations
Our teaching and reinforcing of school expectations and appropriate choices has continued with helping children develop how to BE RESPECTFUL. We are working on "I CAN BE A GOOD FRIEND AND USE KIND WORD and I CAN SHARE, TAKE TURNS, AND WAIT!" These two skills support every child to become aware of others and how their actions and words impact others. Children are still developing the language and communication to express their wants, needs, and feelings.
There are many skills wrapped into the statement, "Be Kind or Be a Good Friend." Children have to understand feelings, develop a sense of others, be ready to share, and be ready to show empathy towards other's feelings. The best way to support our children is through modeling and giving them the practice with the language and actions. Here are some statements that you can teach your child so they can clearly communicate with peers and adults:
1- I'm happy/sad/tired/frustrated/excited - (help your child name their feelings.)
2- Can I play with you?
3- No, thank you.
4- I'll let you know when I'm done.
5- Can I have a turn with that when you're done?
For our children developing language skills, use short sentence structures:
1 - Help please.
2- Turn please.
3- My turn.
4- More please.
5- No, thank you.
Our PBIS skill is reinforced with a Greenmen Pom. When we see a child "being kind to a friend or using kind words" they earn a pom and help to fill our class bucket and school bucket. You can try this at home to encourage the skill of being respectful at home too!
Updates From our School Counselor - Mrs. Ambrosia

Aurora Schools Foundation
The Aurora Schools Foundation supports imaginative and innovative opportunities for Aurora School students beyond traditional funding. Teachers can submit grant applications in the fall and in the spring. Here is one example of an ASF grant impact spotlight. We are excited to see other grants brought to life this year! Visit auroraschoolsfoundation.org to learn more.
The Aurora Schools Foundation welcomed two exceptional students, Julia Stockdale (AHS junior) and Yashasvi Konduru (AHS senior), as the newest ASF student ambassadors!
You may recognize Yash for his role in establishing Aurora's first-ever Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at AHS. Yash and the FBLA group secured state and national placements!
You'll likely see Julia eloquently managing her time competing in or photographing sporting events, focusing on her AP studies, creating music, and so much more!
Yash and Julia will dedicate their time and skills to ASF and bring the student perspective to the organization.
