Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS

Happy Friday Everyone, I hope you have had a great week! It has been another busy week at DCS. The Fire Department in conjunction with the State Fire Marshall brought a new fire trailer to school. Through interactive presentations students learned how to be safe from fires in their homes. The best part of this is the opportunity to climb out the back window of the trailer! 4th and 5th graders have been working with the Harris Center to explore life under a rotting log and they were so excited to find all kinds of creatures. 3rd graders are continuing to practice their knitting skills and are improving each week! 1st and 2nd graders are learning about US symbols and painted American Flags. They were so focused during this activity. Kindergarteners are continuing to learn about letter sounds and counting and each day is filled with fun! Today brought our second community lunch. It is lovely to have parents, grandparents and other towns people join us. We ended our week together with our Whole School Meeting. We greet each other, recognize the Miss Emily Award recipient and learn a new game. It is so nice to end our week together as a community! Next week will be all about Halloween. Thursday morning we will be walking up the hill to the Yankee Parking lot in our costumes; please be sure your students' costume does not include a mask that hinders eyesight or weapons. Please join us if you are able or meet us at the top of the hill. Have a wonderful weekend, Nicole

Note from Robin Gregg, School Counselor Note from Robin Gregg, School Counselor

In classroom counseling lessons this week the younger students (Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade) finished the first part of the Second Step curriculum focused on skills for learning. Next week we will begin a series of lessons about feelings (such as happy, sad, mad, calm), learning how to recognize our own feelings as well as the feelings of others (by "reading" their facial expressions, body language, and listening to their words).

Third grade students each created a practice plan for a skill they want to get better at doing. Ask your child about the steps they plan to take to get better at an activity of their choice.

Fourth and fifth grade students worked on a short-term goal with a partner, completing a jigsaw puzzle in three ways, including using only their thumbs--one thumb for each partner. This was the last lesson in a series about goal setting, planning actions to meet a goal and reflecting on the process.

Minute meetings are continuing at DCS. All current DCS students probably will have at least one meeting with me by around Thanksgiving break. I am also beginning to invite children to small lunch groups with me and one or two other students and will continue to find additional times when students can spend some time with classmates and me in the counseling room to practice skills using games and other activities, develop friendships, and solve problems.

Brrr it's Chilly Out there! Brrr it's Chilly Out there!

Please be sure your student(s) are prepared for the fall weather each day. It has cooled off quickly and we have many students unprepared for being outside. We continue to start our days outside and we do go out for recess each day. Many of our students were unprepared to be outside today for Cornucopia and we do not have gear to borrow. Thank you for your help with this!

Volunteering at DCS Volunteering at DCS

We have more and more volunteering opportunities at our school and we would love your help! In order to be able to volunteer for different activities there are two forms that share some trainings needed as well as the necessary background check. The background check can be completed at the Dublin Police Station (we have forms at DCS that you need to bring with you) or at the SAU. We also are planning to have Denise McLenon from the SAU at DCS during our next Community Lunch on October 25th
