The Falcon Flash
May 2025
Dear Skamania Families,
As we approach the end of the school year, I can't help but reflect on the wonderful moments we've shared this year. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown! We have some exciting events coming up that I’d love for you to be a part of.
Spring Concert – May 6th at 6:30 PM
I warmly invite you to join us for our Spring Concert! Our talented first- through eighth-grade students are eager to perform the vocal and instrumental pieces they’ve been working on. It’s always a heartwarming evening, and I can’t wait to see their hard work shine!
Staff Appreciation Week – May 5th through 9th
This year, we’re celebrating our amazing staff with an "Around the World" theme. Our wonderful PTO has planned a week filled with delicious food and fun activities to show our appreciation. Let’s come together to honor the dedication and passion our staff brings to our school community every day.
Bake Sale - May 15 & 16
Our 8th graders are excitedly planning their upcoming trip, which includes a visit to Olive Garden and an Escape Room adventure! We are grateful to our PTO for generously covering half of the trip's expenses. To raise funds for the remaining costs, our 8th graders will be hosting a bake sale on May 15 and 16. Delicious baked goods will be available for purchase during lunchtime on both days, with items priced between $1 and $2. We invite you to support our 8th graders by purchasing treats at the bake sale! Additionally, if you're interested in donating baked goods for the sale, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping make this trip a memorable experience for our students!
Annual Color Run – May 22
Get ready for our annual Color Run in the afternoon! This event is a favorite among our students and serves as an important fundraiser for the PTO, helping to support various initiatives throughout the next school year. Encourage your child to participate and gather some sponsors—it’s sure to be a colorful, fun-filled day!
State Testing Reminder
A gentle reminder for our families of students in grades 3 through 8: state testing begins on May 15th. A good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast will go a long way in helping your child feel prepared and confident.
Graduation Celebrations in June
I’m thrilled to announce our graduation celebrations on Tuesday, June 10th!
- TK and Kindergarten Graduation: 12:30 PM
- Eighth Grade Graduation: 1:30 PM
These milestones are special moments for our students and families, and I look forward to celebrating these achievements together!
Field Day Celebration (Tentative)
If we meet our Color Run fundraising goal, we’re planning an epic Field Day on Wednesday, June 11th! Encourage your child to gather sponsors so we can transform this day into a fantastic celebration of fun and community.
Last Day of School – June 12
Finally, our last day of school will be filled with class parties and recognitions, with dismissal at 10:00 AM. It’s a lovely way to wrap up the year and celebrate our students’ accomplishments together.
I hope to see you at these events as we finish the school year strong. Thank you for being such an incredible part of our school community!
Warmly,
Katie Chavarria

State Testing is Coming Up
Dear Skamania Families:
In the coming weeks, students in grades 3-8 will participate in the Smarter Balanced assessments for math and English language arts. Additionally, students in grades 5 and 8 will take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).
The results from these assessments will provide valuable insights into each student's readiness for college and career pathways, helping to ensure they are on track for future success.
Students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests:
May 15 & 20 (3-8 ELA)
May 22 (5 & 8 Science)
May 29 & June 3 (3-8 Math)
For more information about the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests, visit: https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing.
To try out an online Smarter Balanced practice test or WCAS training test, visit: https://login3.cambiumtds.com/student_core/V160/Pages/LoginShell.aspx?c=Washington_PT&a=Student
Please call or email kchavarria@skamania.k12.wa.us if you have questions about state testing.
Your support and cooperation in ensuring your child's on-time attendance during these testing days are greatly appreciated as we strive to create an optimal testing environment and set our students up for success.
Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your student. We want your student to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities.
Sincerely,

Updates from the School...
- Our Lost & Found overfloweth! Any items leftover once school ends will be donated this summer.
- If your child currently attends Skamania School on a choice transfer, please be aware that important information regarding next year's renewal process will be sent home soon. We kindly ask you to keep an eye out for this crucial communication to ensure a smooth continuation of your child's enrollment at our school.
- If your child is absent, please call or email the school office to excuse them. This applies even if the child was sent home sick the day prior. We have state requirements for tracking and reporting excused and unexcused absences. Thank you!
- Cell phones must remain in backpacks during the school day. Phones that are taken out will be held in the office until the end of the day.
- Gum is not allowed at school. Please help to remind your child of this policy.
Star Students of the Month
April's character trait of the month was fairness! Fairness is about treating everyone with respect, making impartial decisions, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. Throughout this month, our teachers encouraged students to practice fairness in their daily interactions, consider different perspectives, and make choices that promote equity and justice.
We are proudly highlighting one exceptional student from each class who exemplified outstanding fairness in their actions and decisions. These students serve as role models, showing how fairness can create a more harmonious and inclusive school environment.
TK/K - Bronwyn G.
1/2 - Laney M.
3rd - Aurora L.
4th - Kilian Y.

Support for Families with Children Ages 0-5
What is Child Developmental Screening?
Children are screened in the areas of motor, concepts, speech and language. A hearing and vision screening may also be done. A developmental screening can identify children who are in need of further evaluation and/or participation in Early Intervention or Early Childhood Services that address their areas of need.
Early Intervention (EI) Benefits
- Early identification and implementation of services during the most crucial time in your child’s brain development.
- Services are designed for children in the natural environment of their homes, in child care, or in preschool programs.
- Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is a written plan for services to eligible children and families.
- Transition Plan prior to age 3 is a plan developed for your child when leaving early intervention at age three.
Skamania School District is part of the ESA, making these services available to our families. Please visit this link for more information: https://www.esd112.org/category/programs/early-intervention/
