The Braintree Buzz
Principal's Update
We had another great week at Braintree! Preschool students continued authoring stories with the help of Teacher Harriet. Intermediate students are preparing for holiday skit presentations between their research paper writing. I had the pleasure of joining Ms. K's kindergarteners this week for their Mindful Minute. After a busy hour of recess and lunch, students gather on the rug to hear a poem, based on a letter of the alphabet, about a type of breathing or a visualization. Then, they take a moment to breathe deeply and quietly into calm bodies. Mindful Minute is followed by Share, where students take turns showing a special item or telling a joke. We wondered about the physics of Jimmy's favorite toy racecar and laughed at Bryanna's knock-knock joke. Literacy standards include speaking and listening. Ms. K gives her students many opportunities throughout the day to practice both.
Congratulations to the students pictured (Brooke, Briella, Ivory, Aeryck, and Wylie) for having writing accepted into the Young Writer's upcoming book, Twisted Tales!
Last call for Lost & Found! Please take a look at the linked catalog. Items that have been in the lost & found for months will be washed and donated during the break.
Hot breakfast!!
Hot Breakfast!
Maybe you smelled the cinnamon rolls or bacon baking during drop-off this week. We are so excited that Mr. Patrick makes delicious breakfasts to begin the day. The time for breakfast is short, and students need to be in their classrooms for a 7:45 start time. Drop-off students need to arrive at or before 7:30 to ensure having enough time to eat.
Farm to School
Farmer Ann visited first, second, and third graders this week to cook and taste test a butternut squash soup. Most students found it delicious! We encourage students at these taste tests and at lunch to take "try it" bites. You won't know if you like something if you don't try it!
Student Generosity
First grader Asher joined his mom, Shannon, to make pies to fund field trips with the Partners in Education group last month. He was inspired to raise some money on his own and held a 50/50 raffle at his family's Thanksgiving gathering. He donated these funds to his classroom, and he and Ms. Richards decided how to spend them: a winter craft! Students made snow globes with pictures of themselves in snowy scenes. A fun project and a great lesson in generosity. Thanks, Asher!
Math is Fun!
While Ms. Emma is recuperating from surgery (and we can't wait for her to return after winter break!), OSSD Math Coach Ms. Betty Young has been teaching sixth grade math. This week, they had a word problem about a 200 meter dash. Students weren't familiar with the race, so the next day, Ms. Young marked out the distance outside and everyone (including Ms. Young!) ran it to get a sense of how fast the person in the problem had run. This kind of applied math inspires young people and invests them in their learning. We will miss Ms. Young's daily presence!
Ms. Gershon wrote a CLiF Momentum grant for books to put in an agricultural-themed lending library in the farmstand. We received a Year of the Book grant last year, and this grant is a continuation of that work. We can't wait to start lending out these beautiful books!
