HT Athletics: Husky Highlights from Last Week
Varsity Baseball moves to 9-0
Huskies Stay Hot Behind Dominant Pitching
Hewitt-Trussville Varsity Baseball continued its strong run with a four-game stretch highlighted by dominant pitching and timely offense.
Cale McIntosh set the tone with a dominant performance in an 11-1 win over Cullman, striking out 14 batters over 5.2 innings while allowing just three hits and one run. Hunter Futrell doubled and Koal Duckett added an RBI single to help build an early lead, while Hudson Mitchell and Duckett each collected two hits. The Huskies also showed patience at the plate with eight walks and played error-free defense.
The momentum continued Wednesday as Jace Riggan led the Huskies to a 10-0 win over Gardendale, striking out 11 batters over five shutout innings. A six-run second inning powered the offense, with key RBI hits from Riggan, Duckett, Mitchell, and Taylor Alfano. McIntosh finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and the Huskies again played flawless defense.
Saturday’s doubleheader against Fort Payne showcased more strong pitching. In game one, Hudson Mitchell earned the win with 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits in a 1-0 victory, while Blake Bales closed the door for the save. Jace Riggan drove in the game’s lone run.
In game two, Rylan Clark tossed a complete-game shutout as the Huskies defeated Fort Payne 5-0. Hudson Mitchell provided the big swing with a three-run home run, while McIntosh added an RBI single and Koal Duckett collected two hits.
Across the four games, Huskies pitchers allowed just one run while recording 28 strikeouts, and the defense did not commit a single error.
Hewitt-Trussville returns to action Thursday in Santa Rosa Beach, FL.
Girls Soccer Beats Hoover to Open Area Play
The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team opened 7A Area 6 play in impressive fashion last week, defeating Hoover 3-0. With the victory, Coach Sean Gibson’s Huskies improved to 7-0-2 on the season and continued their dominant defensive run.
Hewitt-Trussville set the tone early, building a 2-0 lead by halftime. Emmie Willoughby put the Huskies on the board with a remarkable goal directly from a corner kick, scoring unassisted to give HT the early advantage. The Huskies doubled their lead later in the first half when Ella Cane finished a well-placed cross from Catherine Mize, sending Hewitt-Trussville into the break firmly in control.
In the second half, Emma Gilmer added the final goal of the night. Gilmer capitalized on a fumbled corner by the Hoover goalkeeper, quickly pouncing on the loose ball to extend the lead to 3-0. Peerson Waller anchored the effort in goal as the Huskies’ defense recorded its seventh consecutive shutout, continuing a remarkable streak of defensive dominance.
The win moves Hewitt-Trussville to the top of Area 6, one of the most competitive areas in the state, featuring four of the top five ranked teams in Alabama.
The Huskies will return to area play Tuesday night when they travel to Vestavia Hills.
