Attendance Reminders Attendance Reminders

open_in_new zoom_out_map

Asalaamu alaykum,

I hope all our families have gotten off to a good start this school year. School started just about a month ago and we hope everyone has adjusted to the new year and established good routines. I just wanted to give a quick reminder about the importance of attendance and students being on time at school. For your child to succeed in school they should arrive on time and be present every day unless they are sick.

If your child is only 5-10 minutes late 3 days a week that means they are possibly missing 15-30 minutes of instructional time every week. Please make sure your child is dropped off and arrives inside their classroom no later than 8:00 am (if a student is not in the classroom at 8:00 am they are marked late starting at 8:01 am). You will be receiving reports from me with the number of instructional minutes your child has missed due to being late or absent.

Students should only miss an entire day of school when they are sick. Please try to limit appointments to outside of school hours when possible. If after school scheduling is unavoidable, please be sure your child attends school before and after their appointments when possible.

Parents may call the office to excuse sick absences for their child for 3 consecutive days. After the third day a doctor note must be received in the office for the absences to be excused.

Traveling is not considered an excused absence. Absences due to travel will be marked unexcused and students and their families will be responsible for communicating with teachers when they return about make-up work. No teacher is required to supply work before or after an unexcused absence for a trip.

Please note the policies below:

Absences

Excused Absence = illness (notification from parent for less than 3 consecutive days, a doctor’s note for 3 or more days), death or serious illness of an immediate family member, and other exceptional cases within the discretion of the principal.

Unexcused Absence = vacations/travel, as well as any absences in which parent notification has not been submitted.

Students who are absent excessively (20 or more excused and/or unexcused absences during one

school year) are subject to automatic retention (repeating the same grade twice). At the end of the school year, any student who has missed 20+ days (excused or unexcused) will have their records, and teacher recommendation presented to the principal for a final decision regarding retention. The school shall assign no grades when a student is absent for more than 50% of the marking period.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s attendance, please contact me.

“Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.”
