CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
Dear Coyote Families,
We’ve had another wonderful week at Canyon View Elementary! On Wednesday, our Westview Ambassadors hosted a Character Assembly focused on Canyon View C.A.R.E.S. Rule #4: Show Safety. These distinguished high school seniors served as fantastic role models and mentors, presenting an interactive skit, teaching our students a new chant, and awarding C.A.R.E.S. bracelets to several lucky audience members.
We also had the pleasure of celebrating fifth-grader Crosby Samakosky, who earned the prestigious rank of Safety Patrol Captain. Crosby and many other outstanding candidates competed for this title through a rigorous application process that included an essay component. The final selection was made by SDPD School Safety Patrol Officer Walter Brobst, with valued input from our teachers and staff. Since only one captain is selected per school, this is a truly significant achievement. Congratulations, Crosby!
We are looking forward to another exciting week ahead. On Tuesday, the Westview Ambassadors will return to campus for a fun "playground play-date" with our students. Thursday marks our seventh VAPA day of the year, where students will dive into the world of Media Arts. Finally, on Friday, our Kindergarten students are heading to the Birch Aquarium for a special field trip that includes an exclusive look at their behind-the-scenes labs.
Let’s make it a GREAT week!
Warmly,
Erica Edmonston Principal, Canyon View Elementary School

Digital Citizenship
In today’s world of constant information, media literacy is essential for all students. It empowers our kids to think critically about what they see and hear online.
Media literacy helps children:
Distinguish facts from misinformation and disinformation.
Recognize bias or persuasion techniques in media content.
Make informed decisions when they consume and create content.
Developing this critical thinking skill helps students navigate digital spaces responsibly.
Resources for Your Family:
Elementary Resource: What is Media Literacy, and Why is It Important?
Secondary Resources: How to Help Kids Spot Misinformation and Disinformation
Together, families and schools can support students in building the media literacy skills they need to make thoughtful, responsible choices online.

Garden Volunteers Needed
This is a fun, flexible way to get involved. Volunteers will:
- Present short, hands-on garden lessons (about 20 minutes) to students.
- No experience necessary! You don't need to be a garden pro or a certified teacher! We provide the materials.
- The days and times are flexible and will be coordinated individually with you and the teachers.
- All volunteers must be cleared through the school/district system. We'd love to have Level 2 volunteers who are cleared to work independently with groups, but we can happily accommodate Level 1 volunteers as well!
Interested in helping our school garden thrive? Contact Terri at terri.l.lane@gmail.com or call 619-861-6427.

Our Little Kitchen, written & illustrated by Jillian Tamaki
Poverty Awareness Month, observed every January, is a special time for everyone, kids included, to understand that some families struggle to afford basic needs like food, clothing, and a safe place to live. Sharing books like Our Little Kitchen is a great way to start a conversation about the importance of community and creative ways to help those in need.
Interested in Visiting or Volunteering at Canyon View?
We love our volunteers! To get started, complete the Level 1 Volunteer Application for Canyon View Elementary at bit.ly/CVESVolunteer or click here (includes TB clearance and Megan’s Law check).
Some roles—like coaching, robotics, or working with students unsupervised—require Level 2 clearance. To obtain or renew Level 2 status, complete the Level 1 steps first, then request a Level 2 form from our office and complete fingerprinting at the PUSD District Office.
If you are visiting campus for a short time—such as attending an assembly, performance, class party or meeting—you do not need to register as a volunteer; simply check in at the front office as a visitor. Classroom visitors need to be scheduled in advance with both the office and the classroom teacher.
