🐝 The Hawthorne Hive Weekly Buzz
Greetings Hawthorne Hive Families! 🐝
I hope you and your family had a wonderful weekend! As we begin Week 34, there is so much to celebrate across our school community, and we are excited to officially kick off a week dedicated to honoring our incredible teachers and staff.
Last week was filled with many highlights. Our students successfully completed another week of the GA Milestones Assessment, and we proudly celebrated victories from both our boys’ and girls’ flag football teams. We also took time to recognize our dedicated bus drivers on School Bus Driver Appreciation Day and showed our gratitude to our amazing cafeteria team on School Lunch Hero Day. I was personally honored to be celebrated on Principal’s Day—thank you to our students and staff for making it such a special occasion. I am truly grateful to serve this wonderful community.
This week, we look forward to celebrating the BEST faculty and staff in DCSD during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week. A heartfelt thank you to the parents who have already contributed in support of Teacher Appreciation Week. Your generosity and support mean so much. We have several exciting celebrations and events planned—please be sure to read below for more details.
Donations for the Hornet Hustle are still being accepted! We’ve raised an incredible $25,396, reaching 84% of our $30,000 goal—we are only $4,604 away! We are so close and can reach our goal with your support. With just a little more help, we can cross the finish line. Every dollar truly makes a difference, and any amount is appreciated. There’s still time to give—please use the link below to donate and help us finish strong!

Spotlight - Nurses Week (May 6-12)
Happy Nurses Week, Mrs. Thomas!!!
During Nurses Week, we proudly pause to recognize and celebrate the heart, compassion, and dedication that our school nurse brings to our community each and every day.
We salute Mrs. Thomas, whose commitment to the health and well-being of our students and staff does not go unnoticed. She serves as a caregiver, an advocate, and a source of comfort—often being the calm in the midst of uncertainty. Whether tending to daily needs, responding to emergencies, or offering a reassuring smile, Mrs. Thomas ensures that everyone in our building feels safe, supported, and cared for.
Her work extends far beyond the clinic. She builds relationships, promotes wellness, and plays a vital role in helping our students stay healthy and ready to learn. Because of her, our school is a healthier place. This week, and every week, we thank you, Mrs. Thomas, for your professionalism, and tireless service.

RESOURCES TO HELP YOUR STUDENT(S) AT HOME
MAY SEL FOCUS
As we wrap up the school year, we want to share a brief update on the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) experiences your children have participated in throughout the year.
Our school counselors have provided students with age-appropriate SEL lessons focused on building important life skills that support both learning and well-being. These lessons included developing positive mindsets, setting goals, understanding and managing emotions, and showing empathy toward others. Students also learned strategies for problem-solving, building healthy friendships, and contributing to a safe and supportive school environment.
In addition, students explored personal safety topics, including understanding boundaries and knowing how to seek help from trusted adults. A strong emphasis was placed on helping students build confidence, recognize their strengths, and develop a positive sense of self. These lessons are designed to support the whole child and help students make thoughtful, responsible decisions both in and out of the classroom. It has been a wonderful year of growth, and our students are looking forward to a well-deserved break.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to promote emotional well-being and success for every child.

Let’s keep the momentum going! Just 5 minutes a day of logging your child’s reading on Beanstack can help us climb even higher on the county-wide leaderboard!
📚 Here’s how you can help as a parent:
- Encourage your child to read daily and log their minutes in Beanstack, every minute counts!
- Parents can track progress and celebrate milestones together with their children.
See video from our DCSD Board Chair Mrs. Allyson Gevertz below, together, we can build a powerful culture of reading at HMES, one page at a time! ✨

Walker Dismissal Protocol Update
The dismissal process for the Walker group is being slightly adjusted to ensure a smoother and more secure experience. Students will continue to dismiss from the side door; however, we will now be implementing a numbered tag system.
Each walker will be assigned a unique number. Parents or guardians must walk to the designated walker door and visibly display their child’s assigned number. This number will correspond to the student’s walker tag, which will be attached to their backpack.
For safety and accountability, students will only be released once the matching number is presented at the door.
Attendance & Dismissal Procedures Update
To ensure accurate attendance records and to maintain a safe and orderly school environment, we are updating our arrival and dismissal procedures:
-
Late Arrival: Students arriving after 7:45 AM must be checked in by a parent/guardian inside the school office.
-
Early Check-Out: If a student needs to leave school early, parents/guardians must come into the building to sign the student out prior to the start of dismissal.
These updates are in place to support accurate attendance documentation. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to helping us ensure that your students are safe during arrival and dismissal from school. 😊Thank you!
