Spartan Spotlight
November 2026
Greetings, Spartan Families!
It is wild to think that we have just wrapped up the first nine weeks of the first semester of the 26-27 school year as of Friday, October 30th. This means that there are only nine weeks left in the first semester!
Therefore, this is a great time to review what this means for your student’s progress towards graduation.
Students must earn at least 6 credits (during 9 &10th grade) and at least 5 credits (during 11 &12th grade) each school year to stay on track to graduate in four years; this equates to 22 credits that are required to graduate from Fargo Public Schools.
Even though the grades throughout the semester will be reflected on a 0-4 scale, all classes will convert to a letter grade (A-F) at the end of the semester and be reflected on a student’s official high school transcript.
If a student does not pass a high school course at the end of a semester there is an expectation that they will need to re-take any class(es) that they did not pass. The options to retake a class include: enrolling in summer school, enroll in that class next school year or enroll in another class in the future to earn that missing credit.
All grades earned at the end of the first semester (as of January 14, 2027) will be placed on a student’s transcript.
Students and their families are encouraged to check Infinite Campus regularly to monitor grades as they are updated often by our teachers.
If you or your student have any questions about your/your student’s grades, please contact the teacher of that specific class.
If you or your student have any questions about your/your student’s graduation progress, please contact your/their counselor.
There are options for students to get continued academic support in our building daily, such as:
- Spartan Period (which is held Mondays-Thursdays) from 8:05-8:40 a.m. Each teacher in our building is assigned two days each week for Spartan Period support and all students are welcome to attend. Teachers have shared their Spartan Day periods out with their students already. If you have questions about this, please contact the teacher of that specific class.
- Teachers also are assigned to a 6th Assignment Period two days each week throughout the school day. This means that students have the opportunity to connect with their current teacher or another teacher within that specific department on select days of the week. We have teacher availability schedules posted around the building and teachers have shared out their specific days with students already. If you have questions about this, please contact the teacher of that specific class.
- Ms. Robinson, our Math Intervention Paraeducator, is available all periods of the day to support students with their math needs. She can be found in the 900 team center each day and welcomes students who arrange a time to meet up or simply drop-in for help.
- Ms. McGoldrick, our Science Intervention Paraeducator, is available all periods of the day to support students with their science (or English) needs. She can be found in the 900 team center each day and welcomes students who arrange a time to meet up or simply drop-in for help.
- With the shift to Evidence Based Reporting (EBR) our building has a common retake policy for assessments (tests). Therefore, if students meet the thresholds/guidelines within their course(s) students can take advantage of relearning/retake opportunities on assessments. This is also another way that students can continue to improve upon their learning and ultimately their overall grade in a course. Please encourage your student to connect with their teachers about retake opportunities on assessments (tests).
However, if you have further concerns regarding your student’s progress towards graduation, please contact your student’s counselor for additional planning/programming considerations and/or options.
As always, reach out to us at any time if you are concerned about your student’s academic, social-emotional, graduation progress or other needs.

Whenever possible, we encourage families to plan vacations during scheduled school breaks rather than on instructional days. Every missed day is a missed opportunity to learn alongside classmates, participate in discussions, and build lasting connections. Planning ahead helps students enjoy family time while staying on track at school. View the FPS Vacation Planning Guide.

Fargo Public Schools encourages families to help learners be in school every day. Remember, every additional day a student is in school creates another opportunity to learn, participate, and succeed. Learn more about the importance of attending school every day.

Attendance and Detention
One of the focuses of Communities in Schools at North is improving attendance for all students. Attendance matters!
As a parent/caregiver, please remember to call North Attendance at 701-446-2410 or 701-446-2411, text at 701-446-8537 or email attendance at nhattendance@fargo.k12.nd.us
Why does this matter? Without contacting attendance your child will be marked truant from each class. For each truant your child will earn one hour of detention. Detentions can add up quickly! Detention hours must be served before a student can attend certain school events such as prom or the Homecoming dance.
My child has detention hours. Now what?
Ways students can serve detention hours
Go to room 114 during their open class periods
Attend Spartan Period (8:05-8:40) with one of their teachers
Work with the science or math para during their open class periods
Students should be specific to their teacher during Spartan Period or the math (Wendy Robinson) and science para (Maura McGoldrick) that they are meeting with them not only for academic assistance but also to serve detention.
Carly Gaddie is the Communities in Schools Social Worker at North. Carly works closely with North administrators and counselors to identify at risk students and provide targeted support.

Repeated Information for Parents/Guardians
Tips for Responsible Spending in the School Cafeteria
Are your lunch account funds not lasting as long as you expected? With meals, snacks, and beverages available in the school cafeteria, it can be easy for expenses to add up.
The following tips can help students make smart choices and manage their cafeteria spending. Parents may also want to review these tips with their students and discuss spending expectations to help make lunch account funds last.
The school meal, compared to snacks and bottled beverages, provides the best value because federal and state funds help offset the cost of breakfast and lunch.
Make the most of your school meal:
- Must include at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetables for special pricing
- Choose at least two additional meal items, such as an entrée, grain or bread item, milk, fruit, or vegetables.
- Students may select up to five meal components: one entrée, one bread or grain side, one milk, one cup of fruit, and one cup of vegetables.
Be mindful of extra purchases:
- Limit entrée choices to one serving. Additional entrées are $2.10 each.
- Consider snacks and beverages as occasional purchases or purchase them when funds are available.
- Optional items include packaged chips, crackers, cereal bars, flavored waters, and other bottled or canned beverages.
Remember: Choosing the school meal first is the best way to get a nutritious meal while making the most of your cafeteria funds!
Visit the Nutrition Services webpage for more information on school meal regulations, prices, managing lunch accounts, and applying for payment assistance.
Personal Communication Device Policy
Fargo Public Schools has a policy that prohibits student use of personal electronic devices during the school day (AP 4263), in accordance with the North Dakota state law.
For high school students, this means:
All personal electronic devices (excluding school issued learning devices) like phones, earbuds, smartwatches, computers and tablets must be turned off and stored in lockers throughout the school day. While in the building during the school day, students may NOT access any such devices at any time throughout the school day including passing time, lunch and/or open periods.
Students may have access to their personal devices before and after school, on shuttle busses while transporting to another site, during extracurricular events, and on high school field trips.
It is recommended students leave personal devices (phones, wireless earbuds/headphones, smartwatches, computers and tablets) at home during the school day.
If your child needs to contact you or you need to be in touch with your child, our school phones and/or the student’s school email can be used to communicate. Caregivers may also call the main office if they need to reach their student during the day.
Violations will follow a clear, progressive discipline process which is detailed below.
Here Comes the Bus
Fargo Public Schools uses the Here Comes the Bus app to help families track their students who ride the bus. This free app provides real-time notifications when your child boards or disembarks the bus, ensuring you always know their travel status. FPS strongly encourages all parents to download the app and set up notifications for added peace of mind. To set up Here Comes the Bus on your phone, click these instructions.
Students in grades K-5 who ride the bus will receive a bar-coded card that will be attached to their backpack and students in grades 6-12 will use a student ID card or input their lunch number on a bus keypad. Students need to scan their card each time they get on and off the bus. This scanning process allows FPS to confirm, in real-time, that the student is safely on the bus or has exited at the correct stop. This extra step is a critical part of ensuring the safety of all students.

Any senior photos submitted to the Laconian yearbook committee must meet the following regulations:

Student parking is available in our south and northwest (pool) parking lots. The cost for a parking permit is $40 and is required to park in these lots.
